I just have to wonder. Instead of just going on about what Mewtwo was SUPPOSED to do, imagine if the scientists did something different. Said hello, hugged Mewtwo, asked how he felt. Treated him less like an object and more like a kid in a new place, which he kind of is. What if he got love and support instead?

If Mew was a proactive parent and mindhaxed those scientists.
He would still be facing massive problems, when giving a human like mind to an all powerful being they get bored. Boredom is what we humans hate the most. He would still have to learn to enjoy life going through stages of finding something that pushes back against his great power. I don’t think the lesson is how you treat someone I think it’s more about the human mind. In a lot of ways we all crave that power that mind yet it’s ultimately what would put a limit to our purpose. We all mistaking my desire that power but all fear the moment the pieces on our chess board have fulfilled there purpose and have no reason to move. The key to fulfilling our human mind is to enjoy life as an animal does

...only Mew's motivations for fighting were less innocent in the Japanese version and Mew intentionally fought Mewtwo to prove originals superiority over clones.
I still cringe at the fact the english script went way out of its way to paint Mewtwo far more negatively.

Mewtwo only did that in the movie because he was raised by a young girl that he loved, but when she is gone, he enters the real world, then he feels he loses his purpose and flips out.

I'm pretty sure they wipe Mewtwo's memories after that, leaving him confused with nothing but vague feelings. It's strong, but not complete motivation in and of itself. It just puts him in the right frame of mind for the arrogant scientists to mess him up psychologically later

I really appreciate you mentioning that Mewtwo had to rebuild the lab, add the castle, make his own pokeballs and that it didn't happen overnight. He essentially perfected the cloning technique that the scientists took years to even have one success in...when creating Mewtwo. I also liked that you describe Mewtwo as having these God-like powers, but with an immense intelligence and that this actually causes him to be bored and isolated. I've never heard him described this way. 802 pokemon, and Mewtwo is still my favorite.
It's too bad you didn't go into the story of Mewtwo's origins. There's a whole intro opening sequence startint with mew buzzing some scientists after they find a fossil, then later in the lab, with a baby mewtwo and the scientist's daughter that he's trying to clone, (The original died). Along with the girl and mewtwo there's also a charmanger, bulbasaur and squirtle. All of them, the girl included, die, and leave mewtwo alone. This leads into the opening with mew in the water with Mewtwo speaking and questioning himself. If we consider what he's already gone through, it's a good place to start with analyzing his character and phylosophy since it shows more of what he himself has experienced. The only friends he ever had died, and later, he recreates those friends, minus the human girl. (Though we could argue that the brainwashed Joy is a substitute for her).
I agree. Even though his memory was wiped he most likely had a subconscious memory of the child and his POKÉMON friends. And I think that the reason Mewtwo was prejudice against natural born POKÉMON is the only POKÉMON he had known were the created POKÉMON. As for his anger towards humans, is, I think due to what Govoni said, "You were created by humans for humans." And because of that Govoni says that Mewtwo has no choice but to obey humans. (Of course I disagree with that. POKÉMON have a choice. They are intelligent creatures. And Govoni being Mewtwo's first contact with humans it's not hard to understand why he had anger towards humans. But when he saw that this young human (Ash Catchem) give his life for cloned and uncloned POKÉMON it opened his eyes that not all humans are bad. And if you know the back story of Pikachu you know that he used to be owned by Govoni, but escaped. That is why in the very episode of POKÉMON Pikachu hated Ash. He no doubt had the same view of humans; because, like Mewtwo Giovanni was his first human contact. But when Ash showed him kindness he too learned that not all humans were alike. I really liked the lesson that the movie had. Just because we are born from different backgrounds doesn't mean that we are better or lesser than someone else. I believe that with all my heart. Sorry that this was a really long comment. I just really like this movie. Because of the lesson I just mentioned. I hope you have a good day.

Hey Grant, you forgot to mention the cut portion of the film with Mewtwo and Ai. It's really a heart breaking scene that sadly never got to the west, it can be found on TH-cam if you know where to look, it is mostly referenced under the name "Birth of Mewtwo". It provides a more cohesive reason as to why Mewtwo is pissed at humans, as in the cut show that they died and he could not understand why until much later, in that he was the only successful clone watching the ones he grew to love die.

Its funny you say cut because if you owned the HVS tape version of mewtwo strikes back it was actually included at the beginning for the North America version.
I do have a VHS copy of Mewtwo Strikes Back and I did not see the cut at any point (until I looked it up much later on). Although it might be due to me living in Canada. And when looking into it further, it was included but only the first two minutes were dubbed it seems. It was later fully dubbed at some point but was in a Japanese DVD (according to Bubapedia) as it was played before the start of the film for VHS and as an extra on DVD.
I live in the US and also did not see the cut until I came across it on the internet. And I watched that tape from start to finish entirely too many times. XD
Hmm, do you think it adds more to Mewtwo's character or takes away from it? I think it humanizes him a bit more as he was fairly innocent, and to just see his closest friends perish because they were not as strong as him making it the first human death in the Pokemon Series... That has never happened since. Feel free to add more to the discussion. I would love to hear more about this as I've never really heard much discussion about it.

1:03 Golem is also Ground, and that's why Pikachu shouldn't have dealt damage to ground.

Everyone's said it before but I gotta again: All of Mewtwo's actions are motivated by him losing Amber and his three friends in the tube.
He might not actually remember it since they erased his memory, but residue of what she told him and that feeling stayed... hence him being born as a pissed off cat when they treat his life as nothing more than a project.

Optitron98 well if they are using the type rules for red/blue they didn’t have dual types meaning it would only belong to one group either rock or ground and not both so it is still possible 🤔

Now that Mewtwo is explained to me, the first thing that comes to my mind is that Mewtwo is a mix of two DC Comics characters: Bizarro and Doctor Manhattan. He's like Bizarro cause of how he is a "clone" to Mew, just as Bizarro is a clone to Superman and he is like Doctor Manhattan because of how he has these god-like abilities but is bored with humanity and pokemon alike

Electric type can hit a rock type , but golem is both rock and ground , electric moves can't hit ground , you are wrong and so is the anime . Your welcome .
Actually, Meowth's translation of Mew's speech is much different in the original Japanese. He says that the clones were the inferior team, because a natural Pokemon had heart and soul behind their power, and the clones didn't. Also in their first fight scene, Mew wasn't laughing just because he was having fun. He thought it was hilarious that Mewtwo actually thought he could fight Mew. You can still see evidence of this behavior in the dub, mostly because of how seriously Mew takes the one-on-one fight afterward, going so far as to summon his full power to strike at Mewtwo. The ego must be genetic.

Yup... That's kind of *pokémon*struous.
It doesn't really fit Mew's character. I like the English dub's interpretation better.
It said something like the true ones will always be superior. I got it off of ThatguyinSuedes Pokémon the First movie review.
Basically, Mew said that the original Pokémon were the true ones, and as long as they would fight without using any special powers (this explaining why they didn't use any moves during the massive fight to the death), the originals would never lose to the inferior copies.
Even if I can understand why it was changed for the Western audiences (they obviously didn't want to portray the cute little Mew basically being just as "evil" as Mewtwo), I still personally prefer the original Japanese version of Mew's character. The whole "It's What's Inside That Counts" speech they gave Mew in the dub was overly sugary and cliche to my taste.

May I say that if you saw the first few minutes of the opening to the Japanese version you would see how more sad Mewtwo backstory is because the English version got rid of those extra minutes at the start that show important character moments
just want to say: the time of the invitation and the time of the trainer's arrival doesn't matter for when the castle was built. mewtwo could have easily built the castle MONTHS or even YEARS in advance and THEN sent out the invitations when he was done. there was no indication to my knowledge that mewtwo invited trainers over mere moments after destroying the lab.
I'm pretty sure it's not years. Because Giovanni stomped Gary with his Mewtwo. It might be just some few weeks or even few days considering how Gary and Ash meet.

If you read his Pokédex entries it says that because his battle abilities were raised to the maximum level, all he thinks about is fighting. In addition, the Pokédex states that he remains statue-like and unmoving in battle to conserve energy. Make of this what you will.

1:01 electric attacks are normally effective against Rock types. It's Golems ground typing that should make him immune to electric moves.

I really enjoyed this analysis of Mewtwo both in the movies and games. I loved the first movie as a kid and because it's so old it's not a common topic youtubers delve in. Mewtwo's such a fascinating existence in the lore but hardly known for that or his backstory but his potential in battle meta if he's even legal to use in the games. Fans love Mewtwo but I've seen many really only care about the game version (which is normal honestly and some do not like the animation so it's bound to happen) and despite the detailed lore in the original games it's still hardly something I see appreciated.
It's kind of deep; is this movie meta about fans/trainers in general? People in general? Not many people are concerned with Pokemon lore as much as they do design and capability for battling (competitively or otherwise). Pokemon aren't real but the possible underlying message is interesting. Are we as uncaring to the idea of life and creatures as Team Rocket was to Mewtwo? Are we that callous to each other as humans? The events of 2017 so far says yes and while Mewtwo came to the conclusion that working together and having strength as a whole rather than segregated is the better way to live due to Ash's sacrifice what will it take for humans in reality? Will a similar tragedy have to happen? Will it take a world ending event to reach that realization? It's pretty interesting to step the first movie side to side like this with how people work and think. Mewtwo really does represent human consciousness and he's a hybrid caught between the intellectualily of human and Pokemon and cannot find happiness with either (which can be seen as a metaphor for those born mixed as well, not belonging anywhere but not happen on one side either). He needed to be surrounded with those like him, representation of what he is living, to be able to find some level of solitude and feel less alone (at least in the movies). This reminds me of how important representation for people of all demographs can be for development and self-esteem. You mentioned the movie touches heavy subjects and I agree. This movie does not get the credit it deserves for touching on deeper topics without being condescending to its audience (you know the whole thought process of "it's just a kids move for kids, it doesn't have to be smart/though provoking/have meaning and every little thing needs hand-holding exposition).
Mewtwo is honestly one of the most relatable characters introduced in the animation (funny considering he's a Pokemon too). As people we seek potential, whether in ourselves or in others or from other's validation, but in the end what we seek is also what can make us or break us. Happiness is both within our grasps and also unobtainable depending the person. We all have ever chattering minds that need stimulation and/or distraction to avoid self destruction even without the boredom that comes with demi-god status. We all have dreams and aspirations that are tainted by reality's expectations (social/environmental or from those around us) and hardships. Everyone in a way is a Mewtwo. Less of the fantasy stuff obviously but more in terms of what is happiness to us and how people who can't find meaning often are always lost. How innocence is a fragile stat of mind that can easily be influenced by the evil around us-as in the video you mentioned Mewtwo was ready to be alive but when 'born' he was only surrounded by the icy hand of those who are selfish and uncaring skewing his perspective and molding his reality into something far from what he desired before birth.
To add, Mewtwo may also jaded by what happened to him while still just a young consciousness. I recall some scenes from the first movie removed (it was considered too heavy and 'graphic' with depictions of death to be aired in US theaters but that's censoring for you) with Mewtwo and a little girl (daughter of the scientist I believe?) and the three starter clones with her. The scientist was researching to bring his littler girl back to life. This girl showed Mewtwo the fascinations of life and explained things to him because he didn't understand (this was when Mewtwo was still forming? He was small/a baby in these scenes and knew little like a new born) and gradually a time came where the three starters gradually died off and then the girl who reached a sense of acceptance as she explained to Mewtwo it would happen to her too. I think they wiped Mewtwo's memory since the loss of the girl was risking Mewtwo's own stabilization/life but I would think he didn't forget. Like even if the memories are repressed it's also familiar, probably like how deja vu works. He knew death before he was even alive and I think even with memory manipulation that stayed with him and maybe his zest and dreams for life originated from his younger self with the girl but because he's a clone from Mew he saw those visions from Mew's perspective? I haven't seen these movies for while so I'm not sure but thought it'd be interesting to add to this topic. (I don't mind being corrected, I need a refreshing on these movies).

You are wrong about Mew and Mewtwo being equal in power. While Mewtwo was fighting Mew he also kept a enormous storm going while Mew was using his full power in the fight. So (Mew's power) = (Mewtwo's power) - (the power it takes to keep that storm going). So Mewtwo was far stronger than Mew.

@@carrier2823 Not really. It was not his goal to have Mew beaten, his goal was to prove and confirm that he is the most powerful. Beating Mew was merely a means to achieve that goal.
So he had 2 possible reasons for keeping the storm up:
- To keep outsiders from interfering.
- To prove more conclusively that he is the most powerful by using only a small part of his power to beat Mew.

i'd like to point out that while Mew wasn't struggling, neither was Mewtwo, it's likely neither of them approached their limits, so we cannot use this movies as a determinant to them.
Wow, I almost forgot Mewtwo was a thing. Nowadays with the “Ultra Beasts”, it seems like Mewtwo never had a purpose in more ways than one, in the way told about in this video, and in real life. Nintendo just used Mewtwo, and replaced him with the next godlike Pokémon they could come up with, making Mewtwo’s tragedy even worse. And his likeness is not even kept that well, I have a couple of Mewtwo Pokémon cards, and they are so much worse than some basic Pokémon I have.

One thing that kind of drives me crazy about the comparison of Mew keeping up with Mewtwo is no one ever seems to take into account that he's both pushing a globe wiping storm, and suppressing all the special abilities of every other Pokemon in the arena while he's fighting mew.
Not just that but also his Lvl is probly still pretty low while Mews Lvl is probably really high.

In Japanese mew was actually only on the island to rid the world of the inferior abominations known as clones... so really it’s no better than mewtwo. The point was in the end neither one was better. The “conditions of one’s birth” line is mewtwo voicing what both he and mew were thinking.
A few other things of note....Rock type doesn’t resist electricity... what IS significant about this, is that golem’s secondary type is ground! Now that is cool.
Also ash doesn’t fight Brock until like episode 4 and the logic behind that was onyx was wet.
Is there an extended intro that I’m not aware of??? I have seen the movie somewhat recently and definitely repeatedly I don remember any of that.

1. I'm pretty sure Mew's intentions aren't explained in a single line of dialog, you have to look at the full story.
2. That might be true (I don't know Japanese tbh, I'm going off what I heard) but it still proves mew's focus was on "winning" not making a point about "the power that's inside" and putting a stop to mewtwo's destruction.

No, Mewtwo is a clone of Mew that had his battle abilities raised to the maximum level. They also tweaked his genes to improve his overall endurance, resulting in a larger body. He can speak due to his incredible intelligence and psychic powers. Even if he read the scientists minds to learn English, telepathy eliminates language barriers anyway.
But look at the Meouth of Jessie and James. He learned to speak by reading books and observing humans. He also learned how to walk watching humans. So Mewtwo being an exceptionally smart POKÉMON has nothing to do with that. I think the reason Mewtwo is able to speak is he has the ability to so I psychically connect with person(s) he wants to communicate with and uses their knowledge of human speech.
