- Many don't understand why hamsters need such large enclosures or why so many promote using large cages for hamsters. Today we explain why it's SO important for you to have the proper sized enclosure for your hamster.

My mom thinks this. I have a roborovski, and my mom wanted to buy a critter trail when we first got her. I’m planning to upgrade from my 20 gallon tank to a Deltof real soon as soon as I save enough money for it, because my mom doesn’t think the bare minimum is a real thing. So frustrating that she prevents me from proper hamster care just because my hamster is small.

My mother (and I'm an adult with grown children of my own) was pretty startled when I told her I wanted to buy a Detolf. She thinks I don't need such a large cage for ONE witty bitty hamster. Currently my biggest cage is a 40 gal. breeder. The rest are various bin cages each over 600 square inches. But I want more, lol.
Victoria my mom works at a pet shop and she knows the minimum for a hamster cage and whenever someone picks a tiny tales cage or bar cages, she points to a tank and says “That ones better, for you and your hamster”

I work in a pet store too and I always try my best to encourage people to buy the biggest possible habitat for their pet. No matter what kind of animal, no animal deserves to live in a tiny cage. But unfortunately, most of the times, people tell me that I have no idea what I'm talking about and they end up buying what they wanted in the beginning. But also, a lot of the times, I refuse to sell an animal to someone who is obviously not going to take care of it the way they're supposed to. I can't force them to buy a big cage/tank, but at least I can refuse to sell them a hamster.

Maybe because their parents won't let them upgrade it. Ever think how horrible that is? This is my mum. She says that my hamster has plenty of space in his cage. He always chew the bars on his cage.

Even in quarantine isn’t even as bad. You can go outside at your own will, you have an entire house, you have the Internet, you have friends, if you want something you can get it, and even more things.
No,it would be a medium-sized bathroom,it still would be pretty small but maybe some people would live there (but not any hamsters,hamsters have still natural instincts)

I was twelve, and I couldn’t do anything about it! Now Luna is in a forty gallon breeder, but sadly she lived almost a year in that tiny cage.😢💕

I have a hamster...her name is Peaches she loves attention and play time.She has a small cage which she never goes in ( £45.) September 2018 we bought her the small cage.But I realised she was chewing and monkey barring all the time,until one day on my recommended it showed Victoria Raechel it was about small cages so I watched it and then I realised I was doing the wrong thing for owning a hamster so I bought her a Hamster Heaven.That cage is now only used for playtime.She also has a other cage which is a habitrail and that is also used as a play cage.

These types of videos always make me think that I’m not being a good enough hamster owner. I know that they’re only made to inform people which is amazing (sharing these vids helps owners understand important things about their care) and after spending $120+ on a cage upgrade I still feel like it’s not good enough (no cage is technically good enough) but I feel like I could be doing more. I’m actually debating whether I should keep mine or not🥺
Before I started watching your videos I didn’t have all of my hamster’s needs , and wouldn’t spot clean the cage but now Cherry (my hamster) has a lovely large cage and I’ve seen such an improvement in her behavior!I know she’s happy and thank you so much!

when i first got my hamster, we went to petco to buy fish. i saw a v cute hammy (now mine) and i persuaded my mom to get him. she did, but we didn't know about this stuff so we got him a critter trail. after a while, i found your videos and i told my mom that it was too small. now, my hammy lives in a 110 qt bin!
I feel so bad for my first hamster I didn’t do research before I got her so she had a small cage and wasn’t given the proper care but now I have a new hamster and I’m glad I can watch your videos for tips and take better care of this one
My hamster had a cage with the bare minimum but as he grew a bit I realised he wasn’t happy and seemed very stressed in his home. We had some spare pieces from an old Ikea desk lying around so I build a new one myself. It took me 2 hours, the desks and some glue.
Now he seems super happy and exited every time I see him out.
And it made me happy too, to give my hammy the life he deserves as I rescued him from a place where he was living in a cage 1/6 of what he has now. 😊🐹

When we got our daughter her first hamster we had her in a tiny cage from Petsmart. It is because of you, Victoria, that we upgraded her to the biggest bin we could find & turned it into a bin cage for her. She lived out her remaining 2 months in that giant cage & was so much happier. Then, the cancer took her from us. We miss her dearly. We couldn’t clean out her bin for weeks. We tried, but we’d break down every time. When we got our daughter another hamster, she actually bought her with her allowance, we put the new hamster in Princess’s bin cage & gave her so much more toys, hides & things to climb on & explore. She’s such a happy hamster!! Thank you, Victoria, for making these videos & teaching us idiot parents how these beautiful creatures should be cared for. My husband & I joke that Princess was our gateway pet. She opened the door for our dog, a second hamster & I recently adopted a 3rd, fish & our youngest daughter’s Make A Wish wish a bunny named Donut.

what I do with my two gerbils is when I feed them, instead of giving them the food I hide it in their bedding and different parts of the cage to encourage natural instinct. ☺️

I’m so glad you made this video. Literally no one is listening to me when I say my hamster is distressed and needs a bigger cage. I’m going out tomorrow and buying everything I can to make him a bigger cage. Pet shops should be absolutely disgusted with themselves.

I had a really small cage for my syrian, he didnt chew the bars or he didnt show stress. Then i got a bigger cage that was 600 sq inches, and he was happy in that cage too. When i found about you i thought that the 600sq inch cage was very small! But it looks like it wasnt. Thank you Victoria for making my hams life better. I used to have a cage of 155 square inches of floor space for my Winter White dwarf hamster, but now he has a 550 square inch floorspace cage.
I really really really want to upgrade (I have two hamsters who have 650 square inches, which is over the minimum) but I wish I had an ikea detolf for them! The only problem is just that I don’t have the space or money for that since I own two hamsters. But at least I have a cage that is over the minimum.

I am definitely making my own bin cage when I get a hammy!! Ive already showed my mum and we think it’ll be a fun project :D I found this really nice bin from Wall-Mart its 850 square inches which is the largest they have, im very excited about it, me my mum and sister just moved to a new house and I don’t have furniture in my room so I have to get that first but then I think she’ll let me get one! She said I have to take care of it fully and I am only 12 but don’t worry ive done a TONE of research since last year and watched like all of Victoria’s videos on Hamster Care, so I think I will be a very good owner :)
I had a critter trail that was so small , but their life totally changed when I reasearched if they could have carrots. Then I reasearched a bunch of more stuff and finally got a bin cage

I have a 55 gallon tank and a large playpen and Olive is so happy! So Thank you for helping me learn so much about Hamsters! I just got Olive three days ago and she's 2.5 months old ❤ I had hamsters as a kid but have learned so much to give Olive the best possible life.

Germany also don’t use plastic in their cages which I love and they tend to use bowls not bottles which is soooo much better for a hamster! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
