    Seeing people insist that bar biting is to wear down teeth and because "they like the feeling" is just so upsetting to me, metal is the most unpleasant material an animal could possibly chew on, they would choose virtually any other material to chew first, I feel so bad for the hamsters in the care of people who refuse to accept that bar biting is a stress behaviour 😔

    • @Aisha-721

      Biting cage bars would be like them chewing on rocks in the wild to keep their teeth short. Who has seen a hamster 🐹 chewing on a rock?

    The myth that hamsters are vicious and violent was most probably perpetuated by the fact that hamster husbandry standards have been subpar until recent years due to a lack of scientific research. This means that most pet hamsters were kept in unsuitable enclosures that were too small and had little to no enrichment at all. A lot of hamsters were also kept in pairs or even groups, which often led to fights and deaths. The stress behaviours displayed by hamsters living under such circumstances were most likely what led people to believe hamsters to be aggressive, when the truth is with proper care and lots of patience, hamsters are perfectly docile, and even friendly if you're lucky.

    • @danielaarienti9511
      @danielaarienti9511 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Totally agree. I know many people who think hamster are terrible animals just because as kid they bought pairs (very typical if you have siblings) and one hamster killed the other one... Nobody never wondering "why?" , so they just assume they are evil -.-

    • @snakewithapen5489
      @snakewithapen5489 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@danielaarienti9511 that goes hand in hand with the myth that hamsters die easy and so are not fulfilling pets. Yes their lifespan is not very long, about 2-3 years, but they don't die 'easily'. It's mostly because people kept them in horrible unenriching and DANGEROUS cages for their entire lives, exposing them to stress and/or other more aggressive hamsters, both of which weaken their immune system. They die *prematurely,* because until recently very few people were aware of what they truly needed to thrive and be happy.

      Im a 11 year old kid and i Do the research and im gonna have a hamster in a 40 gallon with the sunburst and muzury rat and mouse diet as food also 7 inches of bedding, 3 hideouts, 1 sand bath, 10 inch wheel, and a bunch of toys and enrichment and my parents approve of me having a hamster and taking it to the vet. @nataliadoe7126 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@ted_dog4647 that’s great! However, I’m talking about children and their parents who buy their hamster on a whim, with no research, and expect it to be an easy pet that is going to always be up to play and that can be kept in a tiny pet store cage. For that reason, it should only be bought by people who have done their research and can provide for it, not seen as a low-commitment starter pet for children. Very proud that you’re committed to that and I hope your parents are proud as well!

      @@ted_dog4647 well you're one of not many kids ,which is good. Most kids don't do research.I've seen so many hamster that love a poor live because their owner are kids. They'd constantly post in a group asking "what should i do my (syrian) hamster have a baby and ate 3of them!!.should I separate the father?" Or " my hamster is sick and I don't have money for vet what should i do *insert a very sick hamster that need a serious medical care* or most time "my hamster is so cute they play together all the time!!*insert 2 grown syrian hamster that's currently fighting for their life*
      And these happen EVERY DAY!!! I have to see these post from 'mostly' kids that bought hamster because they thought it'd be "an easier pet than a dog/cat"
      I know there'd be a smart kids that know that they should do research before having pets like you. But mostly... kid just sees hamster as a toy that's alive. Or parents just thought they'd cost less than big animals just because they're small.😢

Please, I’ve been bitten so many times before.🤣 And hamsters are only for children? Honestly, I don’t see anything about hamsters that make them childish. I know plenty of adults who have had hamsters. And really, I think they suit any age as long as you give them the proper care they deserve 🙂. We all know the most common myth though: “ Hamsters only need small cages “ This is one of the myths that really annoys me, why should a hamster have to have a small cage? They deserve to explore and enjoy life just like humans.😕 Amazing video Victoria, as always.🌸

    I hate when people say hamsters are for children. They are nocturnal, and most children go to sleep around 8:00 pm, while their hamster is just waking up. Most children want to play with their hamster for entertainment, during the day. This could ruin the hamsters sleep schedule, which is not good for the hamsters well being. Hamsters also need a lot of care to be happy and healthy, which includes having a good diet, a good cage, etc.

      Pet stores are the root of the problem. They keep promoting hamsters as pets for kids, keep selling harmful products and the employees give so much wrong information and advice. Future owners have a duty to inform themselves but I don't think many new owners would doubt the info they get from pet stores, in person or on their websites.

    When it came to the smell section, completely agree with Victoria! I had a hamster in 2010 (the hamster that got me banned by my family to own hamsters) that just notoriously stank so bad. It was probably down to the fact she was a female as well, so obviously they go into heat every 4 days but she was just in general always really smelly.
    I wasn't allowed a hamster until last year when I turned 20, (I actually currently own 3) and two of them really don't smell at all, the new guy I got about 5 days ago has quite smelly pee but it's not bad if you keep on top of it with daily spot cleaning!
    I've always wanted hamsters, and I'm so glad to say I own 3 lovely boys (1 dwarf and 2 Syrians) after 11+ years of not being allowed a single ham... Dwarfs have to be my favourite species out of all of them! But I love them all really, they all have their own personalities! (: (My 2 Syrians however are very alike, but they're possibly related as I was told).

    Last week my boyfriend and I rescued a hamster from a family. The family said there hamster was to loud, they only provided the hamster with a water bottle and a tiny house, they removed the wheel because it was to loud. She was biting the bars all the time. The first night we didn’t have a better cage so we improved it with the tools we had. After giving her a better wheel she did run 12 hours straight! She loved the enrichment we provided and the next morning we got her a cage of 800 square inches. Unfortunately her back is damaged by the small wheel, she has a rounded back. We now use her as a example of what can happen when you don’t keep them properly. She doesn’t seen to have any pain and she has a big wheel now. But it’s so important to search up how to care for them! Daenerys is now happy living her best life, but there are so many hamsters out there that are kept wrong, it makes me so sad

    Hello Victoria! I have just got a hamster and because of your videos she is so happy (I hope!) and I can provide her so much care! I put her in her enclosure and she was playing and it was much bigger than her previous one where she cam from, however, she was climbing on the bars. My mum and dad just thought that hamsters 'loved' to do that but because of your videos I found out its a boredom behaviour! Because of this I am planning on increasing the size of her cage despite her only just getting it! I had a 43L which was just above minimum but I am getting 83L which is double the size! I am hoping I can get this soon and include paper bedding when we would have just used sawdust if I didn't know because of your videos! I want to say a huge thank you and so does pepper (My hamster) for helping me provide the best care possible!

    A myth ive heard is that hamster cheek teeth (molar teeth) never stop growing like the incisors, omnivore rodents like hamsters, squirrels and mice have small molars that are like our molars (they have true roots and their cheek teeth do not grow) because they don’t eat grass but insects and seeds that are easy to chew, guinea pig and rabbits have molars that grow because they eat mainly grass that is hard to chew

    I really love these videos they taught me a lot about hamster care. I know that you've made videos about what hamsters can and can't eat, but I really would like to see a video about what to feed an under weight or over weight hamster. That would be great ☺️

    Thank you for making these videos! I didn’t know about the burrowing until I started researching. Anyhow, my hamster is in a huge aquarium with about 15 inches of bedding and she loves it! She loves it so much I can only cuddle her like once a day. She spends her time burrowing and hoarding food down there. It’s cute 🥰

    I have two Female winterwhite Dwarfs they are sisters and at first we have them in the same cage. ( in Sweden they strongly recomomend to keep dwarfs in pairs or more) but one of them dominated the other to the point that we separated them. The dominate one is biting the bars every day in her large cage. The other one seems to be fine in a smaller cage. The one that is biting the bar is extremely active and also very tame. She is so different from her sister. She eats a lot but is very skinny. I don’t think that it would help to give her a larger cage. She has a deep sand bath 15 cm of bedding, a lot of hideouts and toys. We also have a roborovski dwarf in a large cage and he never bites the bars. He doesn’t even use the whole cage.

      How large is the enclosure exactly? All hamster's are going to be different in regards to whether or not they'll be happy in their enclosure.

    I actually really hate that point of view that hamsters are ideal pets for children. This is soooo frustrating. Children have zero understanding and patience, and they also always sleep during the night so they won’t ever be able to match their schedule with the hamster’s schedule. All these producers mass creating small and terrible children oriented cages for hamsters are simply spreading miss information about these pets marketing them as children pets when this is right the opposite. I had a hamster when I was a child but it was more than 15 years ago when there was so little information about the proper care. But today it is so different with all such great TH-cam channels like this, and it really makes me very sad to see how these animals are still wrongly marketed and perceived by the majority in our society. I adopted a small hamster a week ago and I ordered Niteangel acrylic habitat for him as well as plenty wooden toys and hideouts. I am a fully grown adult busy with an office job, so is my husband, and we literally have zero time for dog walking so we can’t afford a dog as well as we are not really into cats.. we value our personal space, and ability to travel wherever we want without having to think where we should temporarily re home our pet and if it will have a proper care not to be put in stress. So with all that said hamster for us became an ideal pet. We love to watch him digging and playing in his surroundings whirl we stay up late during weekends watching some cool series, so once again I truly believe that hamsters should be remarketed as a low maintenance and funny cool pets exactly for very busy adults who want to have some sort of pet a little bit more interactive than a fish ))) but definitely not for kids. Also Parents too often are not willing to spend a lot on their children’s hamster care. And adults like us, taking into consideration a proper care research and having earned that extra money, are making a way better hammy parents. If you are an adult owning a hamster too, would be happy to hear your stories)))

    Hi! As a hamster owner, I do have some questions so I can make my little Gizmo's life a lot better! If anybody knows what I should do, please reply to this comment. He's a Syrian male, btw.
    1: How should I spend time with my Hamster? Bathtub bonding usually is always 5 minutes long because I live with 3 other people + having people over, so I always get no time doing that.
    2: Cheap cages/bins? I might make him one with the bin, but I can't find any good yet cheap cages, and he's biting at his current one.
    3: When can I get some time with him? He's usually bathing, sleeping, or eating/drinking, and I don't want to disturb him doing that.
    Thanks, guys.

    When I see this it breaks my heart because when I was very very young I had two dwarf hamsters and they bit the bars all the time, as well as monkey climbed them. I asked the store person and stuff, I even looked on forums where I was told that it's normal, that they just shorten their teeth. I feel so bad to know that they were probably bored or stressed. One of them lived to 4 years though, poor things :'( Thank you for educating people !

    In my experience hamsters bite when threatened or mishandled bc when i was younger we had 2 hamsters, my sister disturbed 1 and did somethjng which caused it to bite her finger, she started shaking her hand to get it off which only made it hold on tighter and she ended up flinging it across the room but it luckily landed on the soft blanket which was rolled up on the bed, thank god ot survived

    My boyfriend and I recently adopted my boyfriend's brother's hamster. And I've been watching every single video of yours to give this little cutie her best life.
    I remember when I met izzy (the hamster) she was desperately treating to escape by biting the metal bars and I thought *that must hurt, something is not right here* I felt so happy when I got offered the opportunity to care for her. I've never had a hamster before but Izzy is so adorable that I think I've become addicted to her cuteness.
    Thank you so much for sharing this information and wish me luck I hope I am a good hamster mom.

    I totally get the 'Hamsters bite the bars to shorten your teeth' myth. I have a lot of my family members and friends who tell me that their hamster's teeth are growing really well because they have been biting on the bars of their cage. And I continuously tell them that it's not the case and that they should really get some forms of enrichment and chews for their hamster
