    Another tip: if you need to remove a soiled food hoard, replace it with clean food so they don't return to an empty hoard. And I usually try to do this when my hammy is out in her playpen so she doesn't get stressed about a giant hand reaching into her nest to steal her food!

      lucky! my hamster pees in his BURROWS and no not just the burrow entrance, he does it right at the corner of the cage which is the least accessible place for me, and then proceeds to get super angry when his burrows are destroyed. like bruh thats on u for peeing so far in. oh and he also pees on his wheel so much to the point where i have to wash that every 2-3 days.

    I am so grateful for this channel. I watched so many of your videos before getting my little Portia, (named by my daughter) times have changed since i had my hamsters as a child some 20 years ago. I am guilty of having those generic hamster cages you buy at the local pet store that gives them no space and no depth to burrow. I now have a 50 gallon tank for our little dwarf and she seems to love it. Im proud of her enclosure and all the enrichments we provide her, but im grateful for the knowledge i can pass to my 6 yr old daughter on the proper husbandry these cuties need. She hides little treats in portias enclosure so portia has to "hunt" for her favorite treats besides her food. So from my little family to you, thank you. Here is to a healthy life for our little girl and lots of love for any future rescues we may have. ❤

    In my case, it really helped to put up a camera so you can keep an eye on the times they are awake. My hammy will wake up for a while at around 12 - 1 pm, so i often use this time to do a quick spot clean if i can't do it in the evening 😊

    I dont really like it when people do a full cage clean, my friend had a hamster but with a petsmart cage. I tried to tell her some tips but she ignored me bc she wanted to be with her other friend. She had barely an inch of bedding and idk if she cleaned to often bc it smelled... BAD. so yeah. I wrote a speech on hamsters and hopefully she knows how to take care of a hamster.

    I'm so lucky that our current hamstergirl Peanut mostly pees in her sandbath and sometimes the wheel - easy to clean places. I barely have to spot-clean at all. And she's not learned that hamsters sleep during the day, so she's often awake by herself during the day and wants to get picked up... so we don't have to wake her to clean the cage. I clean it every about 8-9 weeks, keeping up to half the bedding and mixing that with new bedding. Then the cage is redone, usually like it was before, so she doesn't get too confused, although as any hamster, she hates that we clean the cage. She's such a sweet girl 🥰

    When your parents call you lazy and a bad pet owner for doing exactly what you just explained in the video.
    I tried to tell them multiple times how stressful cage cleaning can be for them, let alone how much it would cost to remove all the bedding every single week, but there's just no way to reason with them. They also always yell at me why I didn't disinfect the whole cage, when there is really no good reason to. I can't show them your video, since they don't understand english. We also don't have any dedicated hamster channels that would be in language they could understand.

    The problem I keep running into with leaving a hoard of food is mold mites. I’ve had several issues with mold mites. I spot clean and don’t do a big clean out until 4-5 weeks have past. I will keep some old bedding for smell but if they get a breakout, the entire cage must be cleaned. They aren’t harmful to hamsters, just gross.

      i had ants and any leftover food soon became the source of infection; either molt of other gross stuff. so i'd be VERY reluctant to leave any food debris mixed with bedding anytwhere. it's just not hygenic. when i had a hamster 40 years ago i cleaned his cage thoroughly DAILY. do you leave your food debris lying around in your apartment? of course not. food rotts.....

I just bought a large vista enclosure and tons of options from Niteangel to place before we bring our new love home and I’m so scared about missing dirty spots in all that lol I will try changing out quadrants every week and keep and eye out for any spiked corners or spots.

    How would you suggest to clean out the enclosure of an skittish hamster who doesn't want to be tamed? Would that change something? or would the hamster just have to "deal with it".
    That plopped up in my mind ^^

    • @sylphsarigo1996
      @sylphsarigo1996 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think the way she's doing it in the video would work well for a skittish hamster. A skittish hamster might prefer to stay in the cage, hiding on the side that's not being cleaned. Or you could lure it into a hide that can be picked up and moved to a play area or spare cage until cleaning is finished. But disclaimer, I've never actually had a skittish hamster, this is just an educated guess based on what I've read of hamsters plus my experience with skittish guinea pigs.

    Only regarding the sand, as you said if they are not peeing in the sand, there's no need to replace much. But how long that can be? Im still using the same sand (but sifting it every week) for about 2 months now. There is no smell and no clumps. They seem to use it well still, just how long is long? Haha. I wonder this especially when I read on Bucastate instruction on the packaging says to change the sand regularly (in days 😂).

    I got a dwarf hamster a few days ago, so far he seems to be a very messy hamster underground😂 but he also peed a lot on the wooden wheel and platforms, any advices on how do I clean it later on since it gets absorbed and I don’t want to bother him too much so soon in a new environment?😅

    The hamster cage I got is a 75 gallon fish tank it’s big but it’s kinda skinny he doesn’t seem stressed and I plan on buying a new cage in October as I’ll be making enough money to do so I just need some tips to help keep him happy until then

      there is a video -(not hers) that you can melt beeswax and coconut oil and cover it with that to become waterproof. i don't know if you can use the same thing on cork. this was for wood

    My hamster is quite new (less than a week) and may be a wee ghost hamster, should I leave cleaning for a couple weeks till they're settled in? They seem to not want to be around humans atm and I don't wanna add extra stress on top of the new home stress

    my hamster has (had) a multi chamber hide and he really liked it but he would only pee in a certain area in the chamber hide and I noticed that every time I would clean it out as it became very stinky that his pee had made the wood go funny and insects were attracted to it so I had too throw it out, I'm thinking of getting another multi chamber hide but I'm wondering if there's any way to try and stop what happened last time?

    Is it ok to use a older cage in a bigger cage because my hamster loves to sleep underneath it and has more room to burrow and run on her wheel. I had a hamster before her and she would go potty in her bedding in a box but my new hamster only goes in sand and makes a mess! But she is a lot more calm and just likes to hang out while my old hamster would love to explore and climb and escape from her cage to run around! She was so close to death like 5 times but somehow survived everytime 😂. The cage I have in the bigger cage is metal from the older cage until I found about a bigger cage and just made it to climb on.

    Do you find that wooden hamster enclosures stink more than full glass ones like fish tanks? I don’t know which to get- wood or fish tank

    • @VictoriaRaechel
      @VictoriaRaechel  ปีที่แล้ว

      It would depend on how you seal the wooden enclosure, if you use nothing and they pee on the wood then it will smell more than a tank.

    Hey Victoria! I’m not sure if this is too soon considering Mabel’s passing. Rest in peace beautiful girl. However, I have a question; what do you do when your pets pass away? Specifically hamsters. Do you cremate, burry, do you scatter or keep the ashes?
    I’ve had a few deaths in my life, pets and people and I really struggle to part way with their ashes however, at this rate, considering how many pets I’d like to have I’ll end up with a mighty collection by the time I’m 50 and that isn’t ideal. They also deserve to be free, not trapped in my cupboard until I die. I’ll gain the courage to release at least… some of the ashes eventually but for now I’d really like to know what you do.

    How often do you do this? I have been spot cleaning my hamster once every week. I will only remove the soiled bedding and leave everything else. I see some people spot cleaning daily, but I know this would really stress out my hamster. He's a little shy and likes to hide in his burrows, so when I spot clean I have to remove him from his cage into a playpen/deep tub (he chews through big fabric playpens) which he really really doesnt enjoy no matter how many activities I give him to busy himself with. Food doesn't distract him, neither do toys or hides, so the whole time I am cleaning he's pretty much doing laps around the tub looking for a way out. So ultimately, I think I already stress him out a bit with doing it weekly. Am I doing it too often, too little, or the right amount? Thanks for the advice!

      I do it as often as I need to :) If you can spot clean daily that's fine since you aren't removing all of the bedding at a time just the dirty spots but you also don't have to spot clean daily. You know your hamster best so I think your method is just fine :)

    Ok so what do I do when I find my hams poo mixed into his food stash? He'd been using the sand bath but then I moved stuff around cus we got a bigger enclosure, and some new items hideouts stands..same sand bath though...I don't understand what I did that made him start being messy with his poo area. I couldn't wait to ask you to clean it up but I just took the whole food stash out and sat down and separated it took for ever but I salvaged a lot of his food stash and I kept the burrow he had it in...and just put the food all back in same spot and cleaned out the bedding around the sides of his burrow and put new stuff there. Still kept most of his old bedding. I just was much happier being able to clean the sand bath and not have to worry about anywhere else. Ide just noticed he'd been staying in his burrow more often ans longer than usual so I wanted to check out what he was up to down there. So ya took him out for playtime, and did my investigation in his burrows then. What would you do if your hamster suddenly changed where he's pooing and if it was found in his food stash?

      @@VictoriaRaechelYOU are on your game girl dang! Fast. I wasn't expecting that & I totally could have waited a minute before cleaning for your reply..thank you. I did go through the video again to check, and did catch that part about it not being so bad, i just didn't think it'd be good thing in the food. So what I did, that's ok, ya. I didn't wana leave it in there, beats the point of cleaning,lol. But do you have any ideas as to why he switched and stopped using the sand bath? It's the same sand bath same sand I cleaned out...I've seen some people acually put a little bit of theyre poo in the new area your wanting them to do theyre biz in but wasn't sure if that's really something that'd help. Thank you Victoria, your videos are hands down the BEST! Oh but while im here, question, i think our wheel is too big. I have a dwarf Djungarian & the 12 inch Nitangle. He seems to always slide up backwards on when he's running and has a hard time stopping it appears. Sorta looks like he's playing and having fun with it, wouldn't suprise me cus he's the most spunky funny personality ive seen a hamster have. He's a lot of fun to watch and mingle w during his playtime. I'm wondering if there's a way to add cork to this type of nitangle wheel, it's the clear plastic one that has little line bumps all around inside the wheel, think thats for the hamster to grip better but since my guys so small he basically fits between those bumps...so they aren't helpful for him. Ide just thought everyone said, "bigger the better" but idk bout that for him. Should I just return it and get smaller one? Idk how old he is, my sons Dad got him from a, ya..:( big lame, petstore,I wasn't there or aware this was happening, but I'm guessing he's still pretty young and maybe he'll grow into it. Idk.
