    Once I understood why rabbits chew cords it made me understand them more.
    Rabbits chew cords because pet bunnies are descended from the European Rabbit which digs a burrow and lives underground. These rabbits constantly have to chew roots in their holes to make sure it is not blocked. The cords appear to rabbits as roots and they chew them instinctively to clear their path. Things like chewing cords and digging are just natural instincts since that is what their ancestors did in the wild.

    • @carolineprince7008
      @carolineprince7008 5 ปีที่แล้ว +56

      Trader Dave spot on, I only discovered that after my bunnies chewed my carpet in a corner. I read an article that said, carpet = earth and corners = the end of their burrow. Once you understand how their little minds work you can work out how to bunny proof and provide them with the appropriate alternative!

    • @DrDeliciou
      @DrDeliciou 5 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      @@carolineprince7008 Interesting... that makes sense... they like order. You can't get upset at them for doing what is instinctual in their DNA. I think that is partly why they enjoy tossing plastic baby keys or plastic cups... it is instinctual to try and clear impediments to their burrow. It is really cool to understand why pet bunnies do the things they do. The digging is obvious though... as pet bunnies are descended from burrowing rabbits unlike the Wild Cotton Tails we have in the USA who dont live in burrows.

    I adopted a rabbit named Koji from a rescue organization here in Houston. His previous owner had him caged for about 5 years. That really broke my heart. My husband and I both agreed from the first day we brought Koji home that we would let him free roam and never cage him again. Happy to say this little guy is thriving. He does binkies everyday. He's gotten so comfortable here in his new home. It's nice to see others out there that also free roam their rabbits. Thanks for the video!

    I actually initially started free roaming my bun very shortly after getting her, and I did not even know that this was a possibility. I was just lonely and staying in my room most of the time, so I figured I could let her run around while I am around. I genuinely bought her, thinking that bunnies are just guinea pigs with long ears. Potty training also kind of happened instinctively and she picked it up very fast, whereas I thought bunnies couldn’t even be potty trained...I let her roam around my room more and more ever day and slowly went through the bunny-proofing process, and was amazed at what kind of relationship I was able to develop with her. It’s really given both of us so much value

      How did you potty trained your bun ?

    • @patchnpaw15
      @patchnpaw15 3 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      sumayya naaz Her getting potty trained was a bit of a bi-product of her cage being kind of a hub. Her hay rack was there right from the get-go, so she always went there to eat, and that also meant she did her business there. By the time the cage slowly stopped being used as her home, I noticed she still always makes sure to pee only there while eating. That was when I realized I happened to potty train her ^^” I have to give it to her, she is really manageable

      did u let her roam in one room? cause i have a two floored apartment and I dont know if i should let my bunny roam in just my bedroom or the whole house, im scared ill have missed something and she'll enter my sisters room and chew on stuff or fall down the stairs
      is it fine to keep them in one room cause that feels cruel to me

    • @patchnpaw15
      @patchnpaw15 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@_developing-arc_9250 Most of the time she's in one room, my bedroom is luckily big enough for her zoomie and binky needs. But she's a curious little bean so when the whole family is around and/or we hang out together in the living room, we let her roam around the whole appartment (except for one room) for a few hours. But she prefers to be in the room where we are anyway haha. But if I didn't spend that much time in my room, I would feel bad keeping her there. She is very sociable

I started researching how to care for them, etc. I stumbled upon your channel. Long story short, I had no idea free roaming was a thing! I took apart the bunny house & shipped it back less than 2 weeks later. We bought a pen, worked on liter training him (thanks to your videos) and little by little, started giving him more freedom. After about 2 months of having him, he is completely free roam 24/7 & is loving life!! THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THESE VIDEOS!!!

    When I was younger I wasn't allowed to freerome and me and my family knew nothing about bunnies. So my first female bunny lived a terrible life in a small petstore cage. I have learned so much and almost have about 10 years of experience now. When I got Butters my 2nd bunny he lived a large dog crate then got upgraded to a very large xpen. Your channel has inspired me with my 3rd bunny to freerome. You have also inspired me to advocate for indoor housing, proper diet and I also advocate for flemish giants now! When I started housing bunnies in 2013 there was absolutely no information. Your channel has made a big difference.
    Because I live in Canada the laws are so unfair and cruel for rabbits. Many people breed, mill, neglect and mistreat them and animal testing is legal. I'm so glad you can prove to the world that bunnies deserve so much better. Keep doing what your doing. Much love ♡

    I love Lennon’s space! It is so cute and tidy! I hadn’t thought much about the term “cage” and how it could be twisted or viewed wrong to people who don’t understand that by cage I mean “cage area” which is an open concept where the bunny is free to come and go. I will have to try and use a different term from now on! Sadly I do have predatory animals in the same house hold (my cat along with my parents cats) so I do have to keep them in separate spaces. Which is definitely easier for me considering we have a big house and they can happily have separate areas. However I do worry once I am in an apartment it will be harder for them to have their separate spaces (should I get 2 apartments? 🤔 lol). I will say my cat has been just as destructive if not MORE than my rabbits have been. Also now that my bunnies are no longer babies, they honestly don’t destroy as much as they used to. I am very excited to have my own apartment again so I can free range in larger areas (I have to follow the rules my parents have). I will say my rabbits were WAY more destructive when they were in small enclosures. (Back before I knew about proper rabbit care). I also think it’s sad that the limited cage size promoted is still 2x4ft. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a rabbit perfectly content in something this small. Even though it’s better than a store bought cage, I still struggle a LOT when I see rabbits in cages these sizes). One quick note about very destructive bunnies, some rabbits are very determined and will chew THROUGH cord protectors (yes... Lulu chewed through this AND the cord of the rabbit fridge 🤦🏼‍♀️) so I ended up having to now block off any cords because cord protectors don’t work. (Expens or NIC grids work GREAT!) But some bunnies never touch cord protectors. 🤷🏼‍♀️ So just as you said, totally depends on the bunny and you just have to learn what is best for them. Great video and free roaming is an amazing thing. Even if you’re young and can only do it in your bedroom because of your parents rules. Any step in the right directions will be greatly appreciated by your bunny!

I got Pippin because I was dealing with severe depression. I always slept to avoid my life. After I got Pippin, I knew I was waking up to see him each day. We have a very deep bond. He lets me pick him up when I'm sad or pick him up if he's getting himself in trouble, and he doesn't run away. He always comes to lick me. He is naughty from time to time, but I still love him. When I first saw this video I was in PETCO buying a cage for my daughters bunny. I decided to use the information from this video and let the bunny free range my daughters room. I bought a litter box and filled it up with Critter Care paper bedding and added some of the bunnies pee and poop to it. Today, the bunny runs all over my house and has not made a single mess or chewed on any items in my home. I no longer feel bad of having a caged up animal in my house. Thank you for this video!!

    We bought a two month old brown bunny a few weeks ago from a nice pet store. Pearl is a wonderful brown bunny. She adapted to her new environment within just a couple of days. I made a cardboard box inside of her cage, to hide, and feel safe, as she needed that. She has a comfortable large corner litter box that has a screen top, complete with a fixed water bowl close by the hanging hay bag, so that she can eat and drink and poop and pee, as rabbits usually do. After she finishes her meals, and wants to come out of her cage to roam around the first floor that is carpeted, it is fun to watch her sprint, jump, stand up and look around, and just lay next to her, when she decides to sprawl out after her brief workouts. The problem that is still going on, is that she drops a few poops when she is hopping around, or even after she sits after several seconds, before running to the other side of the room. We don’t mind picking up the dry round poops after she hops back into her cage (Wabbitat). NOTE: Any poops that we pick up, we put inside her litter box. But, my wife gets upset and emotional, when she sees Pearl dropping a few poops, or several poops here and there, when Pearl roams around the rooms. Pearl is still too young to be spaded or neutered (not 100% sure she is a female). So, why is she dropping poops when she is out and about? She know where her litter box is, she goes there inside her cage on her own now to feed, and drink water. She is affectionate with us, licks our skin, and even jumps on our laps for those extra massages and caresses. So, is this poop droppings normal? Will she grow out of that? Any advice would be appreciated.

    My bunnies free roamed, its the best decision I made. She would shake her cage every night, so one day I just removed the door and our bond has grown so much since. She sleeps, eats, plays with me. I still have her cage as a sort of refresh station where she goes to eat, drink, and potty. Sometimes she'll choose to sleep in there, sometimes she'll sleep on my bed or her bed. She's barely a year now and she's well trained and behaved, she still has some stubborn moments where she wants to nibble on the wall or blanket to mess with me. I'll tell her to stop and she'll run away blinkiying lmbo. I just have to remember that she's still young. But its so worth it! We're best friends who understand each other xD.

    Hello! I've found your channel pretty recently and have found it extremely helpful when caring for my bunny, Grayson. When I first got a bunny she had a pretty terrible life. Cage, no hay, no veggies, no room to roam, etc. so after she passed (after 10+ years... wow!) and i got my second rabbit I wanted to make sure he had the best life possible. Grayson's pen takes up almost half of my room and I'm in the process of bunny-proofing the rest of my room! He gets fresh veggies every day and lots of toys to play with. although he isn't able to fully free roam around the house I'm trying to make the most of the area he can explore. Thank you so much for the videos and helpful tips. I hope you and Lennon are doing fantastic. If possible, I would love to send you photos of my rabbits enclosure and possibly ask for tips and an honest critique of his living space. :)

    I have a big house, and just got two bunnies about 7 weeks old. Still learning, and your video helps a lot. I have them blocked off to my kitchen and other dining room. I have a small terrier mix, and he is in between with them. So I keep him separated from them, and of course when we leave or go to bed they go in the big hutch we have. But mainly when I'm home I wanna be able to let them have those 2 huge spaces to themselves, so potty training is my next step. I'm hoping it will be somewhat easier than cats, so my next step is watching more videos. But thank you for all the help. You're doing a fantastic job, keep it up!

Your videos over the past year have been super informative and useful in helping me successfully care for and make her a free roam bun. Drake Javier how did you train her to find her food, water, and litter box

    • @drakejavier149
      @drakejavier149 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Clara Grace Honestly, it was all about supervision for the first week or so... seeing what areas she stuck too and what her behaviours were in those areas. When it came to her food she easily sniffed it out and knew exactly where her food was. Try leading the rabbit with some veggies or treats so it gets familiar with eating in that area and stay in a good feeding routine (my bunny will wait on her food matt for her veggies now). As for the litre box, I personally found a corner to put it into as it seemed more natural (before she was peeing in the corner of her pen.) I highly recommend getting your bunny fixed if it isn’t so already because it will decrease any territorial messes. If the bun is still making accidents around the house, try blotting up the mess and adding it into the litre box so she can smell her scent... encouraging her to use the lite box. It make take a few tries, but stick to it! I promise it’s worth it. Your bunny is smart and will learn where everything is. GOODLUCK!

      It’s a week now that I’ve had my 4 month old rescue bunny. House broken already(WOW) she really did it herself. I let her free roam for hours in a guest bedroom. She goes all over the room and eventually hides under the bed and I don’t know how to get her out to put her back into her pen. Any recommendations? When she’s in her pen she often jumps into her litter box when I come into the room and just sits there, is that normal???

    • @drakejavier149
      @drakejavier149 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sheila Quinones personally I find this normal behaviour.... she feels safe in the areas she is going into... I’m not a professional, but my bun tends to just go under the bed from like noon til around dinner time, it’s her safe nap spot... your bunny is probably just making the room her own and finding where she feels is safe to her. Tip: try adding two litre boxes... one inside her pen and one outside her pen( both with hay) this way she has the option and will learn not to be afraid to use the bathroom outside her pen while you are roaming around! Good luck :)

    Sadly sometimes a cage could be useful, mostly to protect the bunny from other people. Sounds crazy, but in my experience a cage helped me and my rabbit. Hazel is extremely territorial despite being neutered, he approach people without fear and he might even attack them if they disrespect his authority! So when I have guests I rather to keep him in his cage for a while, instead of risking injuries - on him, who cares about the guests, a small scratch on the hand or a bite is nothing compared to a broken leg on of my rabbit because they didn't mind their steps. Because yes, most of people believe rabbits are toy pet and they will try to pick him up even if I asked them to not to, try to guess why I'm so selective with friends at the point I'm considered asocial. Luckily Hazel enters in the cage without complain, because I make sure to give him extra treats so he will associate the caged time to yummy food. For the rest of his time he's free roaming and happy.

      Lory Wolfsong I was looking for someone to comment this. I love the idea of free roaming your rabbit, but when my house has 5 other people I’m constantly on edge... like what if someone steps on him... what if they’re not paying attention and leave the back door open etc etc. Majority of them are 6”3 + and never watch where they’re going, even without the bunny. I feel like at night or when I’m not home for a few hours I like to put them away, just so I know that they’re not in something he shouldn’t be in. I also feel like it’s best for a rabbit to have a secure area that’s 100% theirs, like a bedroom for people. 😆

      It's ok I think most people grow up with the thought that rabbits belong in cages. The best thing you can do now is give your next bunny all the freedom and love that the first one missed out on as sort of a token of respect and love for the first one!! Don't beat yourself up over it though, if you didn't know any better then it's not like you PURPOSELY imposed that sort of life on your bunny. Try to remember what the woman in the video said, you will make mistakes ❤

      It breaks my heart when I think of the bunny I had as a kid. She was kept in a hutch with my sisters rabbit in a hutch at the bottom of the garden. She was fed a muesli mix and iceberg lettuce. I don’t even know if they had hay, just straw. But I was a child, I didn’t know better and neither did my mum. But Angelica and Blue crossed the rainbow bridge quite young, but at least they can binky free in heaven’s meadows.

    I was a person who had bunnies in hutch outside when I was younger .
    But now I have 2 free roaming rabbits. They were rescued from a house of horrors.
    I have had to use the pens just because they had to be separated as I was told they were both males but no one male and female.
    The female was pregnant sadly but as soon as she had her kits she was spayed and the boy was neutered.
    They are now happy integrated with each other and they love the company. ❤❤❤❤

    I legitimately cried during this video figuring out how much hell I put my rabbit through every day, she is in her cage all day everyday, she doesn't have unlimited hay to eat everyday, she just started eating spinach and greens yesterday and she just turned a YEAR OLD. I have absolutely no fu**ing idea what to do, I don't have enough space in my bedroom to let her free roam because I'm genuinely terrified that she will eat something she isn't supposed to, I can't afford to spay her, so she will be out of control out of her cage from what I understand, I just need some help from anyone who can help me. Please like this comment so maybe Lorelei and Lennon can see this and assist me, or any of you fellow people who can give me even a little advice.

I take them outside of the hutch to play in an x pen with me .. i give them unlimited hay and water and pellets because they are only 4 weeks old.. I even bought them heating pads for rabbits.. I plan on getting them neautured when they are old enough.. but I definitely understand how you feel I am super sad because I just started watching her videos and feel like a total asshole now.. When i move out i will start free roaming but for the next 6-12 months this will be their life and I am trying to make the most of it.. I hope she responds to your and my comment with advice

    I had a hutch for my rabbit, but there was a pen around it (and the garden and house too)so she could run around and we only put her in the hutch at night so no foxes could get to her. I honestly had no idea keeping a rabbit outdoors is bad for them, I was really young and read up on rabbits for months before I got her but nothing in those books ever mentioned hutches and outdoors weren't healthy. I'm glad I know those now, I really want another bunny but to do it right those time
