    What a song. A genuine masterpiece. That middle section always sounds like it's going to morph into something just short of free jazz. Jones in particular really shines on this one. The live version is arguably even better.

    Bonzo was a phenomenal drummer. Him and Moon are my favorites. Sometimes people new to Zeppelin overlook JPJ though, when you listen to these songs tune in to the bass and keyboards, he's an amazing musician too. All of them were just meant to play together, there will never be music made like this again.

    Awesome reaction. This has always been in my top 3 Zep songs. Achilles Last Stand is # 1. The 1973 live version of No Quarter will blow your mind. It's about 11 minutes long with the most incredible guitar solo. Be careful you don't listen to the 8 minute condensed version without the solo.

    The drummer, John Bonham, was the heart of the band. He is widely considered to be the BEST rock drummer that ever lived. It's perfectly understandable if you're the type of listener that follows the beat to be swept away by the drumming in Zeppelin songs. And, you're right there's strong Pink Floyd vibes in No Quarter. I never really thought of it but after listening to a lot of Pink Floyd the past several years I see the similarities now. Fantastic reaction to this chill track.

    Hiya Mark.... I've watched a lot of Zep videos from you by now and obviously the drums are making an impression on you, it did on us at the time... And I was trying to think what it was that makes them so different and ok, I get the snare sound is different, and I have been listening to them since 1970 and I've just realised that conpared to so many of their contemporaries the drums are mixed so much higher than others around that time.Thank you for letting me cogitate on that one..... You little scamp... That was singing not guitar at the end by the way.... Robert at his very best wailing.... echoed to fuck of course. Keep on Rocking.

    Watch it live 1973 Madison Square garden. One of the best live solos ever. The concert is epic, since I've been loving you, dazed and confused, while lotta love. Simply so much better live. For a drumming masterclass, Kashmir 1979 knebworth concert. Blow your mind.

  • @mirandak3273
    @mirandak3273 ปีที่แล้ว +16

    I knew you’d love this.
    Led Zeppelin is made of four geniuses. This song shows us the genius of their bassist/keyboardist, John Paul Jones, the main composer of this song.
    I suggest sometime, either on your own or as a reaction video, you check out the much longer live version from the concert film “The Song Remains the Same.” It’s 12 minutes compared to this one at 7. In some live versions Jones adds solos in it & takes it to 20 minutes of ecstasy.
    Not all TH-cam videos of the film version are equal. Find one that has good video as well as audio.
    By the way, the bass in the concert version is done by Jones with foot pedals, like pipe organs!

    • @chassetterfield9559
      @chassetterfield9559 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jonesy was playing a Hammond B3 at Madison Square Gardens, which has a pedalboard built in. It was still a couple of years before Moog would bring out the Taurus bass pedals, as used famously by Mike Rutherford in Genesis.
      By 'In Through the Out Door', he had acquired the Yamaha GX-1 'Dream Machine', which also featured a pedalboard ( well originally it had, & when he sold it to Keith Emerson, but it emerged a couple of years ago at auction, missing some parts, including the pedals ).

    • @mirandak3273
      @mirandak3273 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@chassetterfield9559 Thanks. I love it when a comment I make inspires someone like you to tell us all sorts of neat facts about the music & musicians. What’s cool about pedals is that the player can use two hands to get the full keyboard music while still adding bass, unlike ground breaking Doors’ Ray Manzarek having to use his left hand to get the bass.

    This is the perfect reaction for him to be introduced to the band TOOL. They do an amazing cover of No Quarter. Hector will LOSE HIS FUCKING MIND!!! TOOL - No Quarter. Make it happen! I'm loving your choices of songs to do. And I like how you're doing primarily studio versions instead of live versions. There seem to be a lot of people that don't know that you just want to listen and DO NOT want to watch any video while you're listening. The studio recordings sound so much better than live recordings 99% of the time. I am SO enjoying what you're doing!

    • @mirandak3273
      @mirandak3273 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It’s not either or. It’s both and. We don’t have to sacrifice live versions for studio ones or vice versa.
      But one thing stands out to me regarding Mark. He often expresses dissatisfaction that a performance isn’t longer. But often it is a live version that IS longer. He deserves to know he has the option of enjoying a longer, live version if he wants to.

    Believe me, I know how you feel. I felt the same way when I first heard Led Zeppelin in my teens. I couldn't believe how crazy good they were. John Bonham just drove all the songs in the right direction, and there was no one like him, which is why Zeppelin disbanded after his passing. He was one of a kind. Robert Plant, in his younger day, could reach well above high C in his vocal, and nobody sang like him either at least when they first started out. When Deep Purple guitarist Ritchie Blackmore first heard Led Zeppelin, he fired his then singer for Deep Purple and sent him scrambling to find a singer to compete with Robert. That's how much they changed the whole landscape of what was going on at the time.

    Yeah it was Page's guitar and Plant's vocals that got me hooked on Zeppelin but after nearly 40 years of listening to this band, it is Bonham's drums that stand out the most, and some of those JPJ base lines are just perfect. The piano in this song is just gold! Back when i first got into the devil's lettuce my mates and i would literally close the door and turn out the lights whilst listening to this song stoned...probably a close second to Shine on you Crazy Diamond by Pink Floyd, for that.

    Hector, my man! A great reaction to a great song from a great band. It does me heart good to see your generation discover the songs, and bands, that I grew up with.
    If you haven't noticed already, when Led Zeppelin wasn't singing about women and sex (a great hook for a young buck like I was), they delved deeply into topics like Fantasy novels and Norse/Celtic mythology. This song was one of those deep dives: ancient warriors setting off on a risky mission, expecting no mercy from the enemy and not giving any. This is where the title "No Quarter" comes from.
    If you want to check out another Zeppelin song with that Pink Floyd vibe, I would recommend "The Rain Song" from their Houses of the Holy album. This song illustrates Jimmy Page (guitarist) and John Paul Jones' (bassist) ability to compose, and infuse, music with orchestral elements. It's a truly beautiful song.
    Sorry for the long rant, Hector. Just keep on doing you. Can't wait to see where your journey of musical discovery takes you next. And as always, ROCK ON! 🤟🖖✌️

    I told you this was special. Evolution of Led Zeppelin is amazing through the years... Goosebumps all over me. Oh, it seems you're ready to Kashmir now :) Or, if you want something truly special (and much more recent) get the medley between "Norwegian woods" (Beatles, and DEFINITIVELY NOT the music type you probably associate to Beatles) and "Kashmir" (Led Zeppelin) made by "the aaron english band", That one is crazy good...
    But no, go for the original Led Zeppelin one, Kashmir is a trip into yourself in search for truth...

    I recommend, according to your apparent sensibilities, the following selections by YES: On the Silent Wings of Freedom; Release Release; Parallels; Awaken; Ritual. (If you give them a try please have someone close-by as there are one or two of these that you may not survive). Cheers.

    I’d suggest you watch the live version of this @ MSG… assuming you’d survive it.
