Here in Las Vegas, with 4 long months of 109 to 127F, I hear you about HOT. Best time to raise quail, hatch, brood, and get of laying age. Not so great for anything else. LOL Thank you for your video. I'm reviewing and trying to make certain I have not missed anything for caring for my quail. I've been doing it now for 4 years, still consider myself new to it. So much to learn! Thank you again.
Millet is a good choice. Any of the heavy seeding plants however it’s be very hard and probably expensive to completely mimic nature in any enclosures as quail roam far and wide to gather what’s needed for their existence. For instance there are hardly any wild quail where I live.
Good to know as a newbie. Got thyme and sage growing like crazy. Can use 0a bit of garden produce. Not crazy about raising mealworms though. I sprout seeds using canning jars.
Great video. Just got a few quail. And set some eggs in the Bator. Saw your video on incubating. Good info. We just started a bsf bin for our chickens Can quail eat those (maybe the smaller larvae)?
When you said they can eat paste and rice, do you mean cooked or uncooked? I've hear this several times but no one is clear about that. Thanks for the info.
I also started raising quail. I have coteric Bob White, and blue scale. I also am in East Texas little town south of Beaumont, Groves Texas. Where are you located? If you don’t mind me asking.
I've been trying to feed our quail which are raised on the ground lettuce, various fruits chopped and they wont eat it.. they wont eat anything other than commercial crumble which I am trying to get away from . started fodder.. will be getting soldier flies soon to start raising. hoping.
It’s hard to get a quail off that crumble. I will add that while they eat many foods they will always need seeds/grains in their diet. They will love the soldier flies
@@colonyhillshomestead4683 okay that's good to know that they can eat the lentil sprouts.. I did know that any bean or pea product unless it's out in the wild is something that has to be cooked before you give it to them same as with chickens. Thank you for your prompt response.
I''ve been feeding insect larvae and insects that are in trash cans underneath my quail cage. It's not all poop in there. The quail have sand/soil boxes at all times and are throwing that in there as well. I shove the top layer aside and scoop up the cleaner part full of bugs/larvae. The quail devour it. So far so good. No problems. I'm wondering. If you can provide quail with adequate protein like that, and then lots of fodder (fresh sprouts, edible weeds, leaves, some grass seed heads from yard), do you think that could be a substitute for commercial feed?
Quail are wild birds by nature and certainly can survive without commercial feed but since they are not foraging free range they must have certain things. I diet with seeds and fodder would be essential and yes bugs will boost that protein.
@@ritaholcombe9905 Yes, they are legumes. There is a study entitled: "A by-product of pinto beans in diets for quail in the laying phase." It is worth finding and reading.
This is such a great informative video. I have questions 1. Will growing the oregano and thyme in their outdoor aviary be ok, or will they eat too much? 2. Can they eat pumpkin? Can they eat sweet potato?
My quail had 4 or 5 nights of -30 Celsius (-22 F) this winter. Tough birds indeed. This mornings visit I had to shovel about half a foot of snow out of their cage due to a storm last night.
@@colonyhillshomestead4683 I have some rubbermaid totes I have added old cornmeal, feed, scraps, grass clippings, chicken/quail droppings & a few moist cow Patties mix well only once. excellent information...thank u for sharing...
Thank you!
Grape vines are also awesome, they love the leaves!
Muscadine baby
Glad I found this video, good info. I began my quail journey in January 2022. Still going 👍
Keep going!

Thank you!
Quail Quest farm here . just ordered my first eggs from you, havn't got a ship date yet but I can't wait!!!
Thanks
Your eggs were hand selected tonight and will ship in morning!
I just bought a wynola ranch cage. I’m glad to know they’re good! I’m looking up a sprouting system now
Pretty easy to build your own just but some trays
how many do you keep per rack on that cage?
First time to see your videos, loved this one.
Thanks!!
Thanks so much !
Your welcome!! Where from?
Thank you!
How can we mimic nature in a field that would feed the quail year round? In the wild in winter, they must scavenge for old seed or something?
I would also like to know. Perhaps white millet?

They love crickets!
What age can i give them thyme, dandelions?? And small grit?
After about 4 weeks they can eat anything the adults can

Absolutely quail love black soldier flies
When you said they can eat paste and rice, do you mean cooked or uncooked? I've hear this several times but no one is clear about that. Thanks for the info.
Cooked
Uncooked pasta or rice expand after ingesting and is dangerous for all poultry if it’s uncooked. Just make sure it’s cooked prior to feeding.
Can you feed quails cracker crumbs and cornbread crumbs
Yes !
Did you add anything but water to that sorghum?
Just water now I will say it won’t hurt to add a small amount of hydrogen peroxide to some of your watering it helps prevent fungus and mold
My quails didn't eat wheat grass ne reason?
That’s odd how long have they been without greens
I also started raising quail. I have coteric Bob White, and blue scale. I also am in East Texas little town south of Beaumont, Groves Texas. Where are you located? If you don’t mind me asking.
Anderson county

Could you sprout lentils for your quail as it is high in protein?
Of course yessss stay away from legumes
Aren't lentils a legume?
@@ritaholcombe9905 Yes, they are legumes. There is a study entitled: "A by-product of pinto beans in diets for quail in the laying phase." It is worth finding and reading.
First comment! What fruit trees/bushes would you plant near your run to supplement your quail feed?
Blackberry, dewberry but realize it’s also a good place for snakes to hide and ambush
This is such a great informative video. I have questions
1. Will growing the oregano and thyme in their outdoor aviary be ok, or will they eat too much?
2. Can they eat pumpkin? Can they eat sweet potato?
Quail do not have a tendency to over eat. Pumpkin is fine but potatoes do not need to be fed to quail. Thanks
@@colonyhillshomestead4683 nice, good to know thanks. I got 2 male and 8 female recently. Got a layer mash but I wanted to give them some variety.
How about corn, in those thraya trat, would make a diferença, because they still eat the corn in the end.
Corn is a big seed so starting smaller seeds delivers more shoots in less of a growing area
Can you feed quail rabbit manure. I know chickens thrive on it.
I can’t recommend feeding any animal manure but here’s a thought, sell it as fertilizer and use it to offsets feed bill
Lol far west Texas here
Texas baby!!!!

Leftover micro greens trays?
Avoid spicy varieties, the rest should be almost completely usable. What isn’t should fall through bottom of the cage.
Awesome
104 ? I wish it was that hot here! How about 110 to 115?
Where?

Why do more people grow their own fly larvae & mealworms
My birds eat only fodder, garden scraps & bugs I propagate
Tell us more about your bug propagation. If feed keeps going up they will need the info thanks

Fodder, fodder divorced me mudder years ago.
Just kidding, but where I'm from, people with thick accents would actually talk like that.
Funny as heck!!!
you mean oregano leaves??
Quail can eat oregano leaves 👍
Someone told me hat bread is bad for quails and to stay away from it. 🫤
Bread is bad for us all but do we eat it?
Yes they can eat it but not as their main diet
