My friend asked me if I wanted to learn Swedish with him today and here I am getting an earful of your alphabet. I tried listening to other videos on TH-cam but you were by far the best. I'll also be teaching my young son what I learn from you. Thanks so much for posting this content.
i speak English as a second language. Dutch is my first. I watch learning videos in English because there are more of them. And every time you go 'its completely different' I prepare myself but then I'm surprised it's almost like dutch. Like the J for example. J in dutch or in Swedish is much alike
Swedish was influenced a lot by German and Dutch from the late 1300s to the 1600s. The 1600s spelling even looks Dutch, but it doesn't reflect the actual Swedish pronunciation. In the 1700s linguists and authors made great efforts to restore the original spelling or create one that sounded more like the Swedish of the 1700s, although generally speaking, if you speak Swedish with an exact (modern) spelling pronunciation, you'll come pretty close to how it sounded in the 1300s, except that u was [u] and o was [o] back then. Pronounce 'berg' with a hard g as in English and German and you have the older Old Swedish word. Pronounce h in 'hjälpa' somewhat like [x]. etc.
Thank you so much for this video I started learning swedish with Duolingo and I was struggling because they throw you into vocabulary and sentences without teaching you the alphabet

I have been watching so many videos on youtube trying to learn Swedish but you are great in explaing words in details in an easy way . Thank your for these videos in explaing the pronunciation of the letters ! I believe that understanding the pronunciation of letters is the most important part in order to start learning a language !
*How to remember Å, Ä, & Ö:* *Å* - reads O-A ("oh-ah") from top to bottom *Ä* - the two dots look like tonsils, which you expose when you say "ahhh" *Ö* - looks like a face with a big open mouth; just what you gotta do to pronounce it
A tip that I found helpful in learning to pronounce å was to overlook the a and focus on the circle/ring on top. That will remind you that it is pronounced more like the long o sound in English-especially if you listen to someone from the U.S. Midwest-“Minnesota O.” 😊 I was told that long ago å was written as aa as in paa svenska. Later the two a’s were stacked and eventually the tail on the top a was lost.

Great video! I am an English native speaker but I appreciate the extra thought put in for people who aren't native English speakers. So while some of it is redundant for me, it really shows great knowledge of the technicalities of language.

I love the way you explain the letters with fun examples to make memorisation easier! If I could leave a tip: to do this you use a lot of foreign ideas/words, like ‘huh’ (karate-sound) and ‘pizza’, unnecessary language ‘contamination’. I think it would be more interesting and definitely more edifying if you could use examples that have sth to do with Sweden, since it would create opportunities for students to learn about different aspects of Swedish culture! Please, take this as advice, no critique! Thanks for the lesson 🙂
Thanks for your comment. We always appreciate feedback :) We see your point. The thing is that both "huh" (karate-sound) and "pizza" are Swedish words. Of course originally borrowed words but they are now also Swedish words that you need in Sweden in order to get your pizza and same thing with the "karate sound". So we would not consider it to be "contamination" since it is now part of Swedish sounds/words as well. Then this video is for those who are on a beginner level. In our teaching experience it helps to explain things using words that everyone knows about, such as pizza or "karate-sound". At least in the beginning. This is one of our most popular videos so it seems that it is still helpful for most people. But that said, your advice is still very relevant and we agree with you that it is good to include examples that are more Swedish, at least when you have an higher level than beginner. We would guess from your comment that you are not a beginner anylonger and therefore you would benefit more with other types of words than pizza. Maybe "pannbiff" or "pyttipanna" (Swedish dishes instead). Hopefully you will be able to find these types of words in our other videos. Sounds like it will be easy once I learn it. English is my first language and I always heard Swedish isn’t too hard if you are fluent in English. I’m also learning German and it’s not too hard either. I’m having a blast learning 2 languages at once.
Hi there. I just wanted to say thank you, for your awesome teaching style! It is really helping me. I’ve only just started learning Swedish, I have always wanted to learn, but thought it would be too difficult. Anyway, in a few weeks I’ll be 49, so I decided to finally stop making excuses….and try to teach myself, as much as I can, by the time I’m 50 😂 I haven’t told my son, who lives with me, that I’m learning, or anyone else in my real life. But, I want to visit Sweden by boat, with my son, in the next couple of years. I have a few health problems, (others have worse), but I’m determined to see Sweden, and be able to communicate with people in their native language! (and not be the lazy person from the UK, who expects everyone else to speak English 😂) HOWEVER…..here I am 30th June 2022, having “just about”, got the alphabet down 😂 …..although I confess, and I’m sure I’m not alone in this….I struggled with the I and J!! I can say the alphabet at a good pace, until I get to the I and J, then I have to slow down, and really think about them. I honestly thought it would be the å ä and ö which would trip me up, but no, it’s the “I” mostly!! Gees, I have a LONG way to go…….wish me luck?! 🙏😂 But seriously, I love the way you teach, so thank you again! Take care and stay well. Edit: It’s 3 days later, 3rd July…..and I have the alphabet down! I think I’m saying it in my sleep 😂 I wanted to be able to say it, without thinking, in any order, before I moved forward. So yay Hehe! I also have numbers 1-20 down too. This…. is going to be a LONG difficult journey 😬 but I’m determined! Edit: Yes, another one 😂 I find being transparent, keeps me motivated, I wonder how many of these “Edits” they’ll let me do?! 😂…So it’s now 1 week on, 10th July. I’ve been taking it slow, because I want to understand the grammatical rules, and pronunciation completely, and not just jump into reciting learnt sentences. I also want to be able to write in Swedish correctly. So now I’m just at the stage where I can recite the alphabet, I understand the pronunciation, I’m understanding the long and short vowel sounds, depending on if there is one or two consonants after it. I can count to, as far as I feel like going, now that I understand how to use “ton” or “tio”. I am now looking at examples of different types of words (nouns, adjectives etc…), however I’m a little overwhelmed at the idea of having to just memorise, if it’s “ett” or “en”?! There’s no rule for me to cling to! 😂 Anyway, that’s where I’m up to for now. Take care everyone.
Tack så mycket for your kind words! It was inspiring to read about your story and your future plans with your son :) With your mindset you will learn Swedish without any problem. We are happy to help you along the way. Good luck and hope you can come to Sweden soon.
@@FunSwedish Thank you for your encouragement, I really appreciate it! I will be immersing myself in your videos, whenever I can. I have this one playing every morning, to make sure it’s firmly in my head, before I move on to anything new 😂 I’m really enjoying learning Swedish (your videos, are so much fun to watch), and I think it’s such a beautiful language. I've been learning Swedish since a week or two ago,and today I saw this video and Iand I finished watching it. This video is very funny, it made me laugh, but at the same time I remember the words more. (When I first saw this video, I wasn't sure I could fully understand the content, as my native language is not English,so maybe there is some mistake with my English grammar :(((, I was surprised that it was easier to understand than I thought) Thank you for making these videos, I love them :))
From slovenia learning swedish, the alphabet is very simmilar. For example A, E, I, O, U (the only letters in my alphabet that don't make that weird ' sound) sound the same in slovenian alphabet as in swedish alphabet. Will be easy for me to learn it tho :-)
Thank you soo very much for this video! I could do many associations with Portuguese sounds. For example, the sounds of B (Bia = nickname of Beatriz), D (dia = day), E (ia = would go), etc. Loved the video! ❤️

Thank you for sharing! I currently live in Texas U.S.A., but thus morning I woke up remembering a dream of two booths, like the old style selfie curtained photo booths. They had writing on top that appeared to be Swedish, the only letter I remembered was the A with the little o over the top, and I was fascinated to learn that this letter means small river. Interesting because my mother's maiden name is Nystrom, which I learned a few years ago means "New Stream". In my dream, these booths were actually private video playback booths. The one on the left was for a longer drone video, and the one on the right was for a drone video that was short enough to be a facebook or youtube reel, so shorter than 60 seconds for youtube, 90 seconds for facebook. I am not sure what it all means yet, but after this, I saw a vision of another paragraph of writing, but the only word I could remember from this short vision was SNUZZY, which according to the Urban dictionary is a wourd the means cute and funny at the same time, like a little animal. Another definition is being funny and snazzy at the same time. The final definition is feeling warm, happy, and good inside.

I'm from Greece, and recently I discovered that I like the Scandinavian culture. That's why I decided to do some research, and I decided that I like Swedish the best. Although I'm only 16, I can speak English fluently, French pretty well and I've been having Spanish lessons for about a year. Overall, Swedish alphabet doesn't sound very weird, but some letters are very difficult to pronounce... However, I believe it's worth it😊
⚠️ 1) The letter Q is almost never used at all in swedish. Exception: qub (cube) 2) The letter Å is pronounced like an O, the letter Ä is pronounced like an E and the letter Ö is pronounced like the letters O and E. 3) The letters Q, W, X and Z aren't used a lot in Swedish.

I can’t wait to visit, and be able to hear it everywhere….and of course, to see your beautiful country! Take care sweetheart, and stay well.
Tack FS will have to practice and think about how this related to the words. Like your teaching.

Bra jobbat med din svenska! Tack så mycket. Vi älskar Argentina! :)
I've been learning Swedish since a week or two ago,and today I saw this video and Iand I finished watching it. This video is very funny, it made me laugh, but at the same time I remember the words more.
(When I first saw this video, I wasn't sure I could fully understand the content, as my native language is not English,so maybe there is some mistake with my English grammar :(((, I was surprised that it was easier to understand than I thought)
Thank you for making these videos, I love them :))

Good explanation. Thank you.
Trying to learn swedish to visit my bf and this channel have been so helpful and funny 😅
Happy to help! 😊

Something I do is watch song videos in Swedish with Swedish subtitles and try to pronounce with them. Victoria Maggio is good. Sometimes the pronunciation is softened and more like the english.
Music is a great way of learning 👏. The melodies help the brain remember 😊
Veronica Maggio! 😊🎵🎶

Very good one. Kindly make a series of 200/500 basic and simple phrases of Swedish language like how are you, what do you do, where do you live. It will help those to learn who want to listen and repeat during driving and want to learn more by listening.

I have entertained by Swedish person when I was learning Swedish how cool is that? 😂 thanks a lot.😊
Haha, happy you feel that way! Tack så mycket till DIG!
Thanks for sharing as well. What a fascinating dream. Hopefully you will dream more about Swedish

Glad you like them!
However, I believe it's worth it😊
Hi! I'm fr Vietnam.
Swedish language like a Turkish because we use "Ö" and so simple to us :) Thanks for lesson! Tack sa mycket :)

This is truly an exceptional video about this topic that may not seem so important, when it is!! Thank you so much
The pronunciation is difficult to adopt easily. But your approach is good.

⚠️ 1) The letter Q is almost never used at all in swedish. Exception: qub (cube)
2) The letter Å is pronounced like an O, the letter Ä is pronounced like an E and the letter Ö is pronounced like the letters O and E.
3) The letters Q, W, X and Z aren't used a lot in Swedish.
Cube is not spelled with q in Swedish... it is spelled KUB
Å find this one to be the easiest of the old letters😂😂. Thanks for the video, lots of love from Zambia
