    I can't stress enough how helpful this challenge has been while using Duolingo!! There's only so much you can learn by repeating scentences and trying to guess spelling patterns! This video has saved me already!

    I appreciate this video so much. I have been using Duolingo to learn some Swedish basics and it failed to explain when to use what possessive pronoun. This video explains it perfectly, and your voice is so relaxing!!! Immediately subscribed.

    Awesome video! Duolingo doesn’t explain any of these rules so it’s pretty much a guessing game when learning possessives on there! This was helpful :)
    I have a random question, on duolingo the word “De” is pronounced “don”, eg “de dricker vatten” sounds like “don dricker vatten” - I’m confused about the pronunciation, is it pronounced DON & is there any rule or reason behind it? :) thanks!

    • @lillkrull1161
      @lillkrull1161 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I'm sure you're aware of de/dem (they, them) and that many Swedes struggle with which is supposed to be in what situation. A solution to this was "dom", which is supposed to be a form of multitool that would work in either scenario (it is debated if dom is even correct grammarwise). Anyhow, some people say "dom" while speaking (for both de and dem), while others don't. (I personally don't use dom at all).

    • @wokebear7797
      @wokebear7797 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@lillkrull1161 thanks that was super helpful! So does that mean Duolingo is pronouncing “De” incorrectly? Because when it reads “De” aloud it says “Dom” which is confusing because the spelling reads “de” 🤔

    • @lillkrull1161
      @lillkrull1161 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@wokebear7797 No, I wouldn't say that duolingo necesarily is pronouncing it incorrectly. There are a lot of people pronouncing it that way. People will understand you no matter if you pronounce it as "de" or "dom".
      View it as varying by dialect instead. :)
      I just prefer to distinguish de or dem even when I talk.

      I know this was from 4 months ago so you may have already figured it out or moved on, but her previous video that went over personal pronouns explained the pronunciation.
      I am also here because Duolingo doesn’t explain anything. I wish it would actually teach some grammar rather than just having you regurgitate information

  • @DikWhite
    @DikWhite 3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    I love the way you explain things so clearly. Just one point I'd like to clarify, the possessive adjective and pronoun for it is its, the contraction it's relates to it is. Don't worry, it's an error so many English native speakers make.

      Kaffe is a wierd example 😅. An exception to the rule.
      Happens sometimes with borrowed words from other langueages, but it is very rare.

    Tack sa mycket! I thought that the Vikings made language simple and unified😅😅😅, but after this and seeing the 'plural' & 'the' systems, I think I will give up on this, this is way too much unnecessary complex and frustrating language. But tack anyway 😁

    Ah!! That’s why there’s ‘er, ert, era’ as well as ‘din, dint, dina’ - one’s for ownership by one person, the other’s for ownership by two or more people. Duolingo doesn’t explain that. Or maybe I missed it.

    That aside, you're such a good teacher! The way you explain stuff isn't unnecessarily complicated and it makes me understand stuff better. Wish I was taught Chinese that way😶 My life woulda been way easier

    How do you say "before" in Swedish? Innan, före, förut, förrän?

    • @narianthebear8854
      @narianthebear8854 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I’m a swedish native speaker, but genuinely dont know how to explain hahahahah. It can pretty much be all of those words tho, innan and före translate to ”before” I think, but förut is more like ”in the past” I guess. Föränn is like ”until”. Dont listen too much to this tho, I really dont know lol

    Random question : why min and mitt are pronounced normally but mina is nasal?

    • @FunSwedish
      @FunSwedish  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That is a great question. "Mina" has a long I (I guess for you it sounds a bit nasal) because it is followed by just 1 cononsant. When this happens the vowel (in general) becomes extra long.
      While both "mitt" and "min" have a short "i". Mitt because it is followed by 2 consonants and "min" because it is an exception to the rule (it should also be long because it is followed by just 1 consonant but this is an exception and its pronunced as same as in "mitt)
      Hope that made some kind of sense. Otherwise let me know and I will ry to explain more.
      If you want to learn more about Swedish pronounciation then we can really recommend you to take this online course.

    • @narianthebear8854
      @narianthebear8854 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SimsMoyal I feel like its used if a pronoun is also in the sentence. Like ”Hon sitter på sin stol” (she’s sittning on her chair) To use ”hennes” instead of ”sin” sounds kinda funky to me (Im a swedish native), dunno why tho lol. EDIT: I asked around, and apparently ”Hon sitter på hennes stol” refers to someone elses chair (like, the chair doesnt belong to the person whos sitting on it), so it’s technically also correct. ”Hon sitter på sin stol” means its her chair and not someone elses.

      indeed as it seems - it comes to point out that something belong to someone in 3rd person.
      like she is sitting on her stool - if she owns it than it will be sina stool, if "her" means someone else than it will be the hennes

    • @FunSwedish
      @FunSwedish  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a good question. We will someday make a video about it but you basically need to know it by heart. Most words are en (like more than 70 %) so what most people do is to learn the ett-words by heart.

  • @DaRyteJuan
    @DaRyteJuan ปีที่แล้ว

    4:57 Great video. But fyi: You have a grammatical mistake with the translation on “its.” “Its” is the possessive form for “it,” not “it’s.”

    What do you mean with N word at word and plural?

    • @FunSwedish
      @FunSwedish  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      En-words are words that use EN. En bok (A book).
      Ett-words are words that use Ett. Ett jobb (A job).
