  • In this video we review the new generation G87 M2 on the Grossglockner High Alpine Road in Austria! I've spent quite a bit of time in the OG M2 so I feel right at home in this new Gen, but watch the video to see what I thought was different. Massive shoutout and thanks to F Cars (@f_cars1) go drive some of their cars if you're ever in Austria!

    Funny how enthusiasts are a bit upset but everyday drivers like it, think you hit it in the nail

      As soon as those original owner "enthusiasts" have enough money to buy this, they'll all be saying it's the best M2 so far. For now, they're all stuck in finance deals to the old generation

    Ever since the G87 M2 was launched, I've been trying to figure out why it rubs some enthusiasts the wrong way. In a nutshell, the new M2 supposedly broke the "rules" on what makes a "true" M car in the eyes of enthusiasts. It other words, it "breaks the status quo". This ambiguous set of "rules" varies from person to person, but based on the complaints, it comes down to three main problems:
    i) Design - Historically, most of the beloved M cars have an understated, purposeful design that isn't necessarily beautiful like an Italian car, but it conveys purpose. There are exceptions of course, like the "clownshoe" Z3 M and the E60 M5, but many beloved M cars like the 3.0 CSL, E30 M3, E39 M5 etc. have a "if you know, you know" approach to their design.
    ii) Weight - This one is complicated because German cars tend to get bigger with every generation. Even the beloved E46 3 series was about the size and weight of a first-gen E12 5 series. Not long ago I ran into a comment from an E92 M3 owner saying when he bought his car new, E46 owners told him it was too big and too heavy. Fast forward to 2024, and now F87 owners are telling G87 owners the new car is too big and too heavy. In any case, historically BMW M cars are modest in weight when compared with their contemporaries. They're not as lightweight as a track special like an Ariel Atom or Caterham, but neither are they big bruisers like a Mustang or Mercedes AMG, which leads to the next point...
    iii) Driver engagement - Historically, the German triad (BMW M, Mercedes AMG, Audi RS) have been categorized into different roles. BMW M was the "driver's car", with good steering, chassis, suspension, manual gearbox etc. while not necessarily being the most powerful thing on the road. That went to Mercedes AMG, a.k.a the German muscle car, with big brawny V8s in otherwise ordinary looking cars. The Audi RS cars was the "safe"/tech-laden performance car, with the assurance of a sophisticated all-wheel-drive system to keep you out of trouble where a M/AMG car would chew you out for a mistake.
    Fast forward to the 2020s, and things have changed. Mercedes AMG killed the V8 in the lower-tier C and E class models in favour of heavy but high-tech plug-in hybrids, and Audi RS is set to follow their example. BMW M is kind of in the middle of nowhere, leaning more towards tech while trying to stay old-school to some degree, but as you mentioned, there is a slight disconnect compared to previous models. The G87 M2 seems to have the "GTR" problem, in that it's fast and capable, but lacking in engagement due to its size and weight. Colin Chapman's famous motto of "simplify, then add lightness", stands the test of time for a reason, and currently the only mainstream sports car to follow that motto is a ND MX-5.

      @@urban9575 Thank you! I've actually given this synopsis multiple times in various comments sections of videos, admittedly at the risk of being identified as a comment spammer.
      I simply wanted to add a detailed analysis to the discussion of the current state of M cars rather than just parroting everyone else saying the same ol' things. Quotes like "The M cars are too heavy! uNACCEPTABLE!" or "BMW M have lost their way again" or "My [insert chassis code] just went up in value after this abomination!" are being tossed around a lot these days, but don't add anything to the discussion, nor does it provide actual solutions to the problems. For example, the numb factory steering can be fixed by installing monoball thrust arm bushings at the front. They cost only a few hundred dollars/euros and can either be a DIY or shop job (Dinan parts supposedly can be installed at official BMW dealerships). Would it have been better for the steering to be good from the factory? Of course, but at least the fix is simple and relatively affordable given the price of the car itself.

    as a former owner of a few f8xs including a cs and owner of a few g8xs, the g87 is miles ahead of the f87.

      I think I'm just getting old.. the F87 M2 is a bit more purposeful, felt a bit more lively and raw. F87 M2 has better road feel while the G87 M2 is more precise but you have to trust it and let the car bruise your way through corners.. doing it really really fast. The G87 M2 is more of a dual purpose car.. I have no problem daily driving my G87 M2 and occasionally taking it to the track or back roads. Few things the G87 M2 definitely does better compared to the F87 M2 is build quality, NVH, tech and that S58 engine.

      @@patc8653 yah, the f8x is def a bit more raw but not in a good way imo. it just felt like an unfinished product with its super laggy response, the dead zone steering issues, the fact is pretty slow, etc... the g8x is a more polished product which may not be for everyone I agree... but if you want the that raw analog driving experience for roughly the same price point as a f8x just go with a porsche 997.

      @@patc8653 Owned my G87 M2 for over 1 year now. The s58 is the best M engine to date. It's a monster. Internet talking points are cool, but you really want to get out there and drive these cars. Own these cars before it's too late. So much fun.

      @@patc8653 I def agree the f8xs are more raw but not in a good way imo. just too many issues that made it feel like an unfinished product and overall very frustrating car to own (laggy response, dead zone steering, its not that fast but still doesn't put the power down that well, etc). And I get the people may not prefer a more polished well rounded car like g8xs but if a more analog raw experience is what you are going for, there are plenty of better options over a f8x imo for roughly the same price. a 997 carrera s is probably a perfect example.

      Should I get mt or auto ? I’m so torn … need to make a decision soon . I feel auto makes more sense but I will regret not getting the mt as I plan on keeping this car for a while as my daily . I live in LA . Any advice ?

    • @brelaxed13
      @brelaxed13 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@NathanRamirezYT I personally, would have gotten the auto in hindsight. But that is mostly because my wife can't drive a manual and it creates several issues I didn't think about. I also live in the Tri-state area and the traffic is eggregous, so it is not the most relaxing experience in the world. And after driving an auto, it just feels much faster than the manual. Due to the extra gears and ratio changes, the engine is in the power band more often. And obviously, it shifts much quicker than a person can. But when I am not in traffic and can just drive and rip through my own gears, I wouldn't change a thing. A manual will likely hold more value too in the next few years as these get phased out if they means anything to you. Good luck. Can't go wrong either way.
