One thing that was absolutely ignored when talking about Over the Garden Wall's tech is the Police Car.
Police cars stay in service for a limited amount of time, lasting usually only a few years. The police car in Over the Garden Wall is absolutely a 70s vehicle. Based on my research, it bares striking resemblance to a 1973 Plymouth Fury, but may not be exact as it's not 1-for-1, but it's a cartoon, exact designs and measurements are allowed to be off.
The cassette player is just as easily a 70s device, and Sarah not having her own has no baring on the time frame as she can simply just not have one.
The mid 70s is the best estimate for when OtGW takes place.
That would also make sense, since if Greg was born during the early 70's to late 60's (1968-1972), he'd be in his mid-40's, which is how old he is.

Gregory (OTGW) is in an "elephant" costume
Greg U. had a car wash (It's a Wash) which symbol was an ELEPHANT. Gregory could've had the time of his life, and thought about elephants to do so, as he was dressed as an elephant. Greg U., coming to reality that he was an adult, still wanted those memories, so he made his job's logo an elephant, as it reminded him of his adventurous childhood.
I wish you were correct, but, based on the episode Greg the Babysitter, you're wrong. It seems as though he bought the business from someone who had been running it prior and had already established the elephant logo as the sign was already there when he claimed the place. I suppose the details of him getting the car wash are a bit vague, but this is how I interpreted it.
even if Greg didn't choose that logo, it's still another parallel between the two Gregs

The answer is so simple! over the garden wall is set 35 years before our time, the time of steven universe. When sarah(?) said she didn't have a tape player she meant not yet because they were so new. if in over the garden wall Halloween was on a Friday it would have been on a Friday any multiple of 7 before or after that year, 35 is 7x5, so, 2017-35 = 1982, around the time when tape players were coming out. I'm pretty sure that's about when they came out, referencing pat of the theory above steven universe could be set in 2023 or something.

Wirt's cape is a WWII nurse cape, and WWII never happened in the Steven Universe, which means that Wirt's costume wouldn't have been should SU and OTGW be in the same universe. On top of that, holidays like Halloween don't exist in the SU timeline, and Over the Garden Wall took place on Halloween of whatever respective year it's in. c:

According to most of the stylistic elements of Over the Garden Wall, especially the choices in Halloween decorations, it actually appears to take place in the mid to late 70s, giving much more room for the timelines to line up.

Headcanon accepted. Steven Universe's technology is everywhere, (like having a smartphone/GPS and a Gamecube/VHS) and Gregg Universe didn't mention any of his family. I just assumed there were a falling out, maybe it has something to do with him dropping out of school to be a rock star. I don't know, but yeah, I can totally see potatoes and molasses being the starting point to everything.

That would explain why Greg (Universe) never got big. Think about it, if they were the same person and the timeline you suggest were true than Greg would have met Rose in the mid-90s or so. While he was trying to get famous on 80s style Hair Metal. Believe me, he would have been way out of style. No wonder only Rose showed up.

Over the GARNETT wall
Actually, in the Steven Universe episode "Log Date 7 15 2" it is heavily implied that the date on which the episode takes place is on July 15th, 2002. It is also stated that July 12th, 2002 was the one month "canniversary" of Peridot joining the Crystal Gems. This means that the episode "Message Received" took place on June 12, 2002. Just pointing that out.
This makes even more sense when you realize that Steven has a Nintendo GameCube by his TV. The GameCube was at it's peak of popularity at this time, so he would likely have one. In the show it is called the Dolphin, which is a reference to the GameCube's codename.
but Steven ALSO has a smartphone, he could just be awesome and have old consoles because he likes the games on those consoles. there are a lot of retro references but also a lot of modern references and Steven is a HUGE NERD so it makes sense for him to know and enjoy older video games. (one of the things i relate to him with!)

I feel that Gregory and Wart have an amazing connection since their journey that they will hopefully never lose. Greg Universe seemed to run away from his family and past and never really saw them since, like he seemed to love them but Uncle Andy made the family seem more conservative, so it'd be easy to get sick and want to be yourself more so he would leave and kinda forget to look back enjoying the freedom
I'm pretty sure OTGW was set in the mid to late 70s. It makes sense because obviously the technology would make sense for it, as around that time cassette tapes were beginning to become popular, and when Sara said she didn't have one she probably was saying she didn't have one yet. Also things like the look of Wirt and Greg's house is reminiscent of 70s decor, and in the party scene with Wirt and Sara if you look at the background the walls seem to have a bright 70s wallpaper.
The theory could still work if you consider that in OTGW Gregory was around 6, and assuming that the events that take place happen in around 1978, if you do the math Gregory would've been 40 in 2014. 2014 is recent enough for smart phones to exist, and that was also when SU premiered. And assuming that so far in SU not much time has taken place (my guess is that it's been about a year and a half, maybe two years in the show since the first episode) the timelines would add up pretty well. Also since SU takes place in an alternate-ish universe, where things like WWll didn't happen, it could very much be possible that SU could have take place in the past (like around mid-to late 2000s) and it just has a more developed technology. But this also wouldn't match up as well with the timeline given that Gregory and Greg are the same person.

OTGW happens on halloween, but halloween doesn't exist in SU
It could definitely be the case. The boys from Over the Garden Wall are hinted at being from the late 70s or very early 80s. You can tell because of Wirt's bedroom and his use of a casette player, the style and decor of Jason Funderberker's home were ALL throwbacks to late 70s interior design, the fact that none of the teens had any modern technology like laptops or cell phones, the police car was even designed in that boxy way that was common for cars of the 70s. Wirt also asked if there was a phone in one of the episodes. If it took place in the late 90s to today, he'd have more than likely had a cell phone already. This could all easily line up to take place concurrently with Greg Universe's childhood, assuming its in the same universe.

i think OTGW must have been in the 80s, as Sarah not having a tape player doesn't exactly prove she's moved on to CDs as she could just not have one and even if she had a cd player she could still easily have an old tape player lying around. also Wirt made that tape for her, and this wouldn't make much sense if he didn't expect her to have a means of listening to it. but that could just be Wirt being Wirt. As for Greg's lack of talk about Wirt, OF COURSE HE DOESNT! he's a college dropout who changed his name and ran away from his close minded family to become a rockstar, he doesn't talk about ANY of his family ever! the only time he does is when his cousin actually shows up at the barn. We don't know anything about Wirt and Greg's family in otgw, nor do we know how they changed after the incident, but considering what Wirt and Greg both went through i wouldn't be surprised with it ending up with Greg cutting ties with his family to become a rockstar. but that's just me who has loved this theory for a looooonnnggg time XD

Gregory Demayo had his little adventure in otgw, then he found a love interest with percie's ( Clarence ) mother and had Percy. Then he launched his music career and left Percy with his mom. That's why Percy is so messed up. Percies mom divorced Greg over the phone. Greg got washed up, changed his name and started to fail. That's when he found beach city and Rose, married her, and gave birth to the hybrid we call Steven.

OoOoH it would also kinda explain why Greg (in SU) Wasn't shocked, weirded out or scared when he first met amethyst, who at the time, had shape shifted into a talking bird! like beatrice! he also wouldn't be that weirded out by the gems or all the magic cause of the stuff he saw and did as a child!!!

Greg in steven universe doesn't mention ANY of his family until Andy shows up, and even then he still doesn't talk much about it. Greg cut ties with his family and literally changed his last name when he dropped out of college to become a rockstar, it makes perfect sense for him to not mention Wirt at all

I'd have to rewatch the episode to see just how much is talked about their family, but i remember very little being said about it. also Wirt went through a lot in the unknown and was likely more traumatised by the experience than Greg was due to Greg being so young at the time. or at least Greg was better at hiding it. that combined with Wirt's quirks and nerdiness and, if Andy is anything to go by, the DeMayo family doesn't seem very open minded, so Wirt may have become a bit of a black sheep in the family.
In that case, I just hope he's not in an Institution somewhere...

I'm saying that the theory isn't a good one so it doesn't hold up. The channel can do it if they want but the theory won't have much evidence considering Steven has only one parent who can have multiple children and after meeting Rose it's a reasonable assumption that Greg didn't get romantically involved with other women. Plus the genetics don't really match up, Clarence is blond while Greg has brown hair. While it's possible that Greg has a recessive blond hair gene it isn't very likely and because we haven't met Greg's parents it would be taking a pretty big leap to say that he does.
I'm saying the theory doesn't hold up. The channel probably isn't going to cover it.

Wait a sec... Jacob said "...wirt is no longer in the the picture?" Does this mean the original OGW ending might have happened? (If you don't know, the original ending of OGW has it where only Greg makes it out of the Unknown and Wirt stays. Since the Unknown is the Afterlife, that means Wirt is dead.)
So, this means the reason why Greg doesn't mention family rarely is because he is saddened over the death of his older brother. To better understand this, I'll do a timeline.
1983: Greg Universe is born.
Early 1990's: OGW happens, Wirt dies, Greg blames magic as near-death hallucination.
Mid 2000's: Greg moves to Beach City, meets Crystal Gems.
2009: Steven Universe is born.

something im surprised wasnt mentioned in this- the music that mr universe has from when he first meets rose/ the musical stylings of such classics as "let me drive my van into your heart" match the music taste that Wirt has ( found by tapes laying around his room) almost perfectly.
The way that greg explains things that are harder to say to steven almost parallels the way Wirt talks in OTGW as well, in terms of cheesy poetry until forced to bluntly state it.
Now, personally, i dont believe this theory but if the theory were better grounded it would make a lot more sense greg grew up to be more like his big brother that he adored than to stay the same way he was as a child.
I'd argue this theory would make a TON more sense if you factor in that mr universe essentially left his family and old life behind when he went on tour to try and become a rock star and as a sort of coping with missing his family at the beginning started acting more like them or listening to the music they liked.

I think it's important to note that Over the Garden Wall originally aired the weekday following Halloween 2014, meaning that it's definitely the most obvious candidate considering the moon phase (which, honestly, is really freaking well-researched).
That being said, Steven Universe goes out of its way to let us know that their world is an alternate *universe* (a-hem) than our own, due to the map of their world having a gigantic hole in the middle of Russia & shameless jokes made about the differences in state/city names. So if Steven Universe is in a parallel world, then it's very possible that OTGW could take place in that same reality where the phases of the moon are different from ours.
Honestly I've long thought that cartoon creators who are friends commonly put their characters in the same alternate universe, thereby making crossovers and subtle nods to each others' works a lot more plausible, since changing the reality of our world opens up a lot of opportunities to bend the timelines, events, and physics of theirs.
in Steven universe the earth spins north to south. Based on screenshots I've seen of both shows I can assume the moon rotates the same way. We've never really seen a screenshot of the earth so I'm assuming the earth rotates north to south in over the garden wall too. So yeah here's so more evidence.

Biggest problem: OTGW takes place during the early 90s. Steven is 14, so he was born in 2003. So unless Greg rapidly aged, traveled in time, and had a baby--nope.
Over the Garden Wall takes place in 2014 of Halloween not the early 90s.
Football games also happen on Wednesdays where I live. It's been that way for a few decades. The last time a waning moon fell on Halloween on a Wednesday was 1978. That's something to consider.

maybe over the garden well takes place in an alternate universe while Steven universe is in the present due to phones,cars,etc while over the garden walk is in a somewhat old town filled with present things which could mean Greg (over the garden wall) is Greg (steven universe) but an alternate version

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that Steven Universe's universe has no holidays. I think Rebbecca Sugar said that somewhere. If that's true, then they can't be in the same universe because OTGW takes place on Halloween

It would be awesome if we saw Greg Universe in a Halloween episode at his house, and he opens a cupboard and there's a tea kettle in it. It would be a nice homage, but if they really wanted to make it canon and have a full crossover, after Greg looks at the tea kettle, Wirt comes out from the shadows, in his costume, old and scruffy saying "it's been a while hasn't it?"
