    I live in the Philippines. I bought one right after getting out of the hospital for my heart operation. Here, I got it for over 14,000 pesos. Initially, I was very disappointed. Blade didn't want to drop and there was some side to side play. Go figure. Usually, when blade play is present, the blade would drop. Mine didn't. Talked to a friend about selling it and I just kept it in my closet for about a month. Took it out one morning just because I realized I didn't want to give up on it. I disassembled the knife, cleaned and lubed the washers and put it back together using blue loc-tite on the pivot screws. I went in all the way thinking I would back them out little by little until I got the action I wanted. i didn't need to. First time I used the compression lock, the blade dropped shut. It has since become my favorite among my Spydercos, dethroning my old S110V PM2 in the process. One knife for everything? Absolutely!!!

      Great post. It’s a shame though that we have to break down and polish internal parts to get the knives to work smoothly when paying these exorbitant prices. Should be done at the factory.

    Now it’s like $203. F’k that noise. I should say I had no issue dropping $190 for a Maxamet Manix 2 lw. I want the value to be in the business end of the knife, and as much as I love Spyderco’s s30v, it’s not a $200 knife steel.

    I still prefer the Manix 2 for the textured G10, full flat grind for smooth slicing, and the BBL seems more durable for hard use since a ball bearing offers more support than flat metal. The Shaman is badass though.

    I appreciate you making this video. If I could, I would. Unfortuantely, I sold my Shaman at a deal to a kind viewer who let me borrow some knives for review. About 2 days later, the "Spyderpocalypse" as you call it, happened. While it feels like a big price hike (and 20% increase is quite a hike), I do not feel it changes my opinion of the knife in any way. I still consider it more capable, more comfortable, more pocketable and thus more carryable, than the PM2. It is one of the very best knives. Period. Spyderco makes some of the greatest cutting tools out there. If they need to increase prices to keep doors open, I'll still buy their products. They will lose a portion of the market like this; it will be interesting to watch.

    Benchmade and now spyderco are just not competitive, at least in their base models, in materials and features. I mean at $180 who's shopping for a work knife? To me that's fancy knife territory and several makers are willing to accommodate me and for a work knife there's choices with equal or better materials and features for half or even a third the cost. I don't hate spyderco, I used to love them, but I'm getting better elsewhere for less.

    • @mrblauer1

      I feel the same. I cannot justify that premium price on an EDC knife I plan to use and, gasp, abuse.
      After decades of service, my Buck 110 has now gone to my son, dents (from using it as a hammer, oops, rocks work better) and all. I believe Spiderco designed this knife for that purpose, but the price increase has pushed it firmly into a gentleman's carry category.

    Really like the SW finish on the blade ... looks similar to ColdSteel's treatment, and I've always liked that look. In no reality is that a $180+ knife however (IMO anyhow) so I'll wait until they are discontinued and pick one up for around $130 or so, which is a much more reasonable & realistic price (again, IMO ... if someone paid $180+ and feels it was well worth it, then that's all that really matters :)

      MrGeerbear It might be that their Colorado made knives were produced at a loss so far. Maybe. And now they have to charge cost and profit to stay in business. In any case the effect on me, the consumer, is dissatisfaction. To stay on par with production cost increases and keep a stable market the only way is to gradually increase price, not slap a big chunk every 5 years. When I can get an excellent working knife as the ColdSteel Lawman for $75 in CTS-XHP in a relative similar size category the Shaman looks ridiculous at $180.

    • @MrGeerbear
      @MrGeerbear 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You are being quite nice. The mark up on knives is huge. I guarantee they were making money at $150. They saw a popular knife and wanted to cash in. Benchmade did the same thing with the Crooked River. The increase was just not as high. I feel like Paul Revere always saying, "The Chinese are coming, the Chinese are coming".

    • @TheTimLara
      @TheTimLara 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Mark Tudor - I live in Colorado, actually very near the Spyderco factory, and I can confirm that the cost of living increases here over the last 10 years have been ridiculous. Some of the highest increases in the country. So yes, I am quite sure that it has been difficult for Spyderco to pay their Golden factory workers a fair wage by Colorado standards and still keep their prices competitive with other brands making knives in lower wage countries. I'm not happy about the price hikes either, just like how I'm not happy about how much houses cost in my neighborhood now.

CO has gone down hill fast and it' so damn expensive there. I understand Spyderco Increasing the prices due to the cost of living in CO, but I wish they would have gave it a gradual price increase. Either way if someone wants a spyderco hard use knife they will buy it. I think that is why spyderco was so brazen to jump the price.

    Sliceman- I know you really like Spyderco. Their prices have bothered me for a long time. Their materials rarely justify the price. I call it Spydergreed. For $150 you can get a Real Steel Megalodon with titanium scales, roller bearings and M390 with a 3.8 inch blade. The Delica is now $75. Really? FRN and V-10 for $75. I can get a Bestech budget line knife for $52 that has 3D milled G-10, D2 steel and bearings. Are Spyderco and Benchmade totally unaware of the competition the Chinese are bringing into the market? Yes. The Megalodon has more features but it's not a knife I'd consider against this. It's larger and flashier. I think the Shaman is a much better hard use knife. But yeah... Bryan... Time for the "Long Term Review" Picked up a Shaman in REX 45 last week. : )

  • @christophermccaulay7498
    @christophermccaulay7498 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    So, Bryan; the price has increased even more since this video was first released 2 years ago. The base s30v version is over $200 dollars now. Is it STILL worth it? Is this knife worth over $200? Even more on the secondary for a sprint. I have the itch for for one but, I want to know if this particular knife is worth the serious price increase (base model, I hate sprint culture and I'm not paying $300 - $500 on the secondary)

    • @SliceyDicey
      @SliceyDicey  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I looked at a few Benchmades. The Crooked River is one I'd consider. I liked the Presidio II but this has vastly superior ergo and carry. I looked at some ZT's that just didn't appeal to me aesthetically but had better steel for sure. And a lot of Kizers. I love Kizers but slippery titanium framelocks aren't what I consider a "heavy use" knife like the Shaman is.

    So Brian in case you didn’t know the mothership in Golden gives 50% off msrp if you’re a veteran. So I’m a veteran and just ordered the black shaman with a msrp of $299, that means $149.50 plus $13 for shipping so that’s $162.50 total. So if you’re a veteran the best deal is going to spyderco’s own store and register as a vet. They do a quick online confirmation and the discount is processed automatically when you go through the end portion of online checkout. Just thought that you and your subscribers should know if they didn’t already. Keep up the good work!

      Slicey Dicey well I’m glad I could share this with you and your subscribers. Spyderco is truly a great company and giving a discount to our military and police officers show that they respect those that have served. I respect them for doing so. Spread the word.

      Chinguss. It was $149 before the price increase w/free shipping from retailers. Not much of a deal unless they ship it it for free. I ship knives all of the time and it doesn't cost $13.

    Its a Great Knife, especially if you take a file or grinder and remove the blade nub. I used a Dremel and removed it while keeping the blade cool with dunking oil, took all of 10 minutes to tape it all up.

    Spyderco will either survive or fail with the price increase. My collection started with Spyderco and moved on to cold steel and never will look back. I use knives as tools and not toys or fidget spinners. Anyone looking for a superleaf?

  • @FTA4evr
    @FTA4evr 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I've noticed that when a knife company, like Spyderco, discontinues a model, and the MAP strictures no longer apply, retailers are free to set a price they feel is both competitive and profitable to them. This price is invariably well below MAP. Greed seems to be the determining factor for American knife makers' pricing strategy.

    • @mikegoddard9376
      @mikegoddard9376 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      MAP pricing policy is *ridiculous* ... it's as absurdly inflated as "MSRP" prices. Plus, it removes any competitive edge dealers may have. If a knife costs the same regardless of where you buy it, then unless you already have a preferred dealer or online store, you can basically close your eyes and pick a random dealer. Plus, IMO, it is one of the main reasons so many clones are out there. If you only want the "look" of a knife, and are willing to gamble on quality and legitimacy of materials used, why spend $200+ when you can get the same exact knife, as far as looks go, for a fraction of the cost? For the average user, wanting little more than a simple box-opener or EDC with a look they like, they may prefer that option.

    • @SliceyDicey
      @SliceyDicey  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      As I said in the video... I just hold my finger a different way and it’s no problem.

    • @gandolflitke
      @gandolflitke 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes and no Matthew. With the shaman you learn how to close it Like Slicey mentions. For me, When the knife is just about to close my fingers move out of the way naturally. It's really no different then closing a frame lock, you usually move your finger out of the way before the blade closes down, same principle with the shaman. Your finger will move out of the way before the kick knocks against your finger.

    • @mforrest1508
      @mforrest1508 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Matt L you see I have had a few pm2 models. I can sometimes feel the kick hitting my finger. So with this I would think I definitely would in a big way. I know the guys at spyderco know more than me. But I just don’t get that as a design choice. I guess it depends on the smoothness and freeness of the pivot as well. Don’t know gotta handle one I guess.

    • @gandolflitke
      @gandolflitke 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah Matthew,
      I would say it all depends on peoples hands as everyone is different. But I agree, Spyderco could has designed it a little different. All they had to was take off a little piece of the choil base and it would have eliminated the issue, But I suppose doing that would have interfered with the ergonomics of the finger choil?

      I feel like this totally misses the reason that people buy, and make, >$100 knives. You see knives. From $100 to $1,000 in CPM-154. I personally think that Spyderco should CQI all of their US compression lock models to S45VN, like they did with the PM2 - but S30V isn't a detracting factor in the $200 pricepoint, just maybe not our favorite.
