    56 dislikes to 250-some likes? That barely qualities as controversial. Shoot for that 50/50 ratio, like wranglerstar.

      @GerbilKor Yes. I ended up unsubbing from the legendary Wranglerstar. He kinda got a little boring and more opinionated. Fair enough, more power to him, but I feel he dictates his opinion as opposed to many folk who offer their educated opinion without expectation of blind acceptance as gospel.

      Brad I'm with you. I recently unsubbed him as well. Added Advanced Knive Bro. Equally opinionated but far more sarcastic and doesn't take himself (or us) as seriously.

      I generally like his content. But the combination of preachiness and blatantly wrong information makes it necessary to take anything he says with a grain of salt.

    In a million years, I’d never of thought to use my spyderco knives for carving toy violins for dolls! Ha ha ha ha! Excellent! 😂

  • @manifestgtr
    @manifestgtr 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    My shamans are my favorite general EDCs…and that’s coming from a massive collection. They’re just ridiculously comfortable, good at basically anything you’d need it to do on a day to day basis. There are better slicers out there. There are sturdier “hard use” knives. But the shaman splits the difference right down the middle for my purposes…not only that but it carries like a much smaller knife. If you can ever find a crucarta version for the right price, *that’s* the one to get. The crucarta shaman is my favorite thing that spyderco has ever done.

    • @jamesgurr7678
      @jamesgurr7678 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I ended up with the Dymondwood and REX45 version. What would the difference be between that and the cruewear model?

    • @chriswebb3018
      @chriswebb3018 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@jamesgurr7678 cruwear is tougher with better fine edge holding ability. Rex 45 a much harder steel with longer edge retention but not as good of fine edge holding abilities. More of a tough working edge steel. Also cruwear is more stainless of the 2, even though both aren't stainless steels. I have the z wear version which is almost the exact same as cruwear and the m4 version which is very close to rex 45 and that's my experience. Although I do like rex 45 a bit more than m4, just prefer hard steels.

    Please do a cut test review of CTS-BD1N steel. There is a lot of disagreement as to how much better CTS-BD1N is compared to CTS-BD1. (The new Para 3 Lightweight is going to use CTS-BD1N.)

    Shaman is now up to $231 at KnifeCenter - fortunately I got one on sale for $184 via the Black Friday sale and had $50 in points at KC, so I got it for $150 shipped which wasn't too horrible (although I did order a deep carry clip from MX Gear, so that's another $28). I have a Para 3 in CruWear that I love, this will be my second Spyderco and I'm really looking forward to it. I wanted a knife to fit in between the Para 3 and my Cold Steel AD-10 in regard to overall robustness, and I figured the Shaman is a good fit for that. My Para 3 has been my go-to favorite for years for carrying around and lighter duty use.

  • @Pharto_Stinkus
    @Pharto_Stinkus 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    In my understanding, a sabre grind is basically just a flat grind that doesn't go all the way up. I've noticed that many people in the hobby don't even use the term sabre-grind anymore, they say things like "almost full flat grind" or "a flat grind that goes almost all the way up."
    I agree that Shamans are over-priced. But I still love mine, and consider it one of the best one-and-done-do-anything knives out there.
    I've never had a Caribbean, but I do use my Shaman outdoors quite a bit, and I've found that it excels at woodsy-bushcrafty type tasks, right size, right shape, right handle.
    Interestingly, mine did NOT come with a sharpening choil.

    Excellent review and comparisons. Good on you for adding facts about coast not equaling value. Not terrible margin and for all of us that have a PM2 and use them,,,we can agree a more comfortable Spyderco in that vein with just a bit more size has been rolling around our head. Really no need to look further. I have a stronger passion for the USA Earth Co and for that reason and like I said,staying in that vein the Shaman in a sprint run sporting Cru Wear is it for me!

    Thanks for your heads up on the Caribbean, I picked one up for a 2 month beach camping trip and I love it even more than I anticipated. Much lighter than it looks and the LC200N takes an incredible edge and holds it well. Wonderful knife.

    Good one Pete, and timely for my first Spyderco acquisition research. Helluva rope-cut count for S30V. Wish they would do it in a better steel for the price though; this is Elmax/M390/CPM 20CV territory. I am wavering between this and the lovely typical Spyderco S90V Manix 2 in blue G10.

    I implore you, kind sir, never EVER stop doing the Crazy Shit Videos. My friends that have zero interest in knives always get linked to those entertaining excursions into insanity by me, and all of them, without exception, have a howling good time.
    I guess I am one of those rare people that have never liked the overall look of most Spyderco's, but this model is kind of nice. Having said that, I do hope to one day buy the SpydieChef, based on your reviews, and its ability to last virtually forever in all environmental conditions, particularly on the coast where I live.

    Hey Pete , another good "full" review . I like the looks and performance , but I think its still a bit overpriced , especially with s30v . My favorite Spyderco work knife is the ZDP-189 Endura , at $104 (US) the knife is practically unbeatable...

    I can't think of a Spyderco that comes with an adequate sharpening notch or choil and despite their 'constant quality improvements' not a single one gives a nod to the necessity of resharpening. Until now. I'm assuming that was done by the previous owner. My reason for asking is your thoughts on resharpening Spydercos (since you do a fair amount of sharpening).

    Heya Pete! I've just purchased a Shaman in REX45 steel (I think it was a sprint run), and I was just wondering if, from your usage and experience, the REX45 would be an appropriate steel for this slightly larger, intended for harder use, Spyderco knife? I don't know much at all about the attributes of REX45, except that it is supposed to be quite a hardy and tough steel. Is this true? Thanks in advance for any help- and keep the videos coming- some of them are hilarious😁👍✌

    Nice...great review. Seems to me you are a very creative person. But it was good to hear a great review of a knife since I was under the impression reviews were why you are here. Don’t misunderstand me, as I find your vids entertaining also, but after this review I am convinced you can do both. So bravo on this one. BUT....LOL. I did notice that you don’t respond much to viewer comments much. Not a big deal , but it might improve your fan base if you connected every now and then. Even if you told me to f... off, it would be better than no response at all. Ok, I know you can’t respond to all comments, but once in a while shouldn’t take to much out of your busy life.

    If you dont put tape on each side of the blade when you use a worksharp you'll eventually have permanent scratches on each side. This is from pulling it through the worksharp and having it rub against its own metal filings and filings from other knives.

      Cheers for the reply. I bought the Shaman, and though it has many good attributes others have named, I find the price and the idiot way the ricasso slams into your thumb when closing the compression lock a bit unworthy of Spyderco’s reputation. I am used to lesser reputations performing without such fundamental flaws. You are likely right about the Manix 2 being the better choice. I hear the lock can be sticky - is this an issue that can’t be readily fixed?

    I keep waiting for a sprint or exclusive in M4, Cruwear or another tough wear resistant steel. I just cant swallow the price for S30V on this model when I can get another Spyderco that's valued better or even another brand like a BM Contego in M4 for the same money. Spyderco is dropping the ball on the Shaman. It could be an amazing knife.

    I really don’t get the Shaman. It’s like Sal said “You know what people don’t complain about enough? How much pocket space the Manix consumes. Let’s make it thicker!”.

      FlamQ Dbltap Not saying I have a problem with it. I carry a Manix 2 LW at work almost every day. It’s just that in the forums and FB groups that seems to be the number one thing people bring up in the never ending Manix vs PM2 debate - “It takes up too much room in the pocket”.

    Yes but have you ever done the infamous spydie vs benchie S30V comparison? Makes spydie steel look like chit lol
