    These are the kind of videos EVERYONE should be watching. Learning how to take care of your clothing (or any of your stuff really) is important and useful to every generation, but especially to the younger ones, that seem to not be aware that this is very much a part of self-care practices. Thank you Justine for your work.

      The gray-water filter is such welcome information. After years of supporting recycled plastic bottle fleece garments, it was a shock to discover the shed fibers from washing them were showing up in large numbers of dead marine life. Though as you say, the fibers are small, they were of such density in cubic square meters of ocean water that it was seriously impacting many species, even whales, having clogged their gills and invading their digestive systems. I’m hopeful they will soon be marketed for apartment dwellers, as we are unable to install permanent fixtures.
      Justine, I so enjoy your videos. Having run an anti-slavery NGO, it was devastating how unreceptive many were to the harm caused by fast fashion. I pass on your videos to many, and you help me to stay current now that I’ve retired from business suits to more relaxed styles. Thank you!

      @@Jacquelinenht1 I bought a GuppyFriend laundry bag, which I toss microfiber items into before wash, then take them out of the bag for drying. The bag is supposed to collect the microfiber filaments, much similar to how @justine leconte officiel says her machine filter works. I liked the bag so well I gifted one to my daughter.

      @@lindas.1751 I have researched and other solutions available on the market do not prevent microfiber pollution. You have to pick up the fibers that get caught and throw them in the trash or down the drain - back into our environment, which means you have not solved the problem. Luckily, PlanetCare closes that loop when you send the filters back and they recycle all the fibers. Great solution and I just ordered one. Thanks for raising awareness about this. Very important topic.

    My grandma taught me to store wool, cashmere and silk in a cotton bag, because moths don’t eat cotton.
    She had a fur coat which she also put in a big cotton bag and she sewed it shut.
    I still follow her advice, I find old pillow cases with zippers to be very useful.

    Justine, an old wardrobe mistress's trick for sanitizing shoes and delicate clothes instead of laundering (or if laundering regularly isn't possible) is 1 part distilled water to 1 part vodka in a spray bottle. This is how I sanitize the inside of shoes and handmade blouses and fine knits: I saturate the insoles of the footwear or the armpit area of the blouse or sweater with this solution, and then air dry fully before storing the footwear or garment. Works especially well on winter boots before storing them for the warmer months. Appreciate all these tips; ThanksForPosting : )

    • @Maja0001
      @Maja0001 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      If you are using 1 part water to 1 part vodka, you get solution of only 20% alcohol and that is far too watery to have effect on bacteria

    • @tamcon72
      @tamcon72 3 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      @Katharina Funk Good vodka has a higher alcohol content, and while 70% is necessary to sanitize surfaces like skin sanitizing of textiles is possible at a higher dilution. I have been using pure 90% alcohol to disinfect during the pandemic, but the tip I give is not for viral neutralizing! For just sanitizing shoes and shirts, vodka and distilled water work fine.

    In India, many families use stainless steel trunks or almirahs for storing clothes. They may not look trendy/classy/stylish but saved the expensive silk and woolen garments for years. All of my silk sarees have been in storage since forever. Every year, around twice a year, I take them out, let them some sunlight for a few hours or dry clean them and put them back in storage.

    I absolutely loved this video! We need more of these practical tips! I have a tip too: iron and/or steam iron your clothes! High temp kills most germs. Of course some materials are not suitable for high temp or any ironing at all, so make sure to check the labels. I have also discovered that ironing makes clothes look better for longer time, and it gives me more joy to actually wear them. I iron all my cotton clothes, even those that could be "ok" without and they look almost as good as new every time I reach for them. 👕👖💙

    I store most of my shoes in these proper plastic cases with breathable holes. They're stackable and easy to store on the lower shelf of my Closet, away from sunlight. For long boots, I have a fabric storage unit for each pair.
    For clothing, I store most of it on hangers inside those "suit cases" with zippers, mostly made of fibers and breathable. I have a lot of dresses and storing them on hangers (folded in half, so as to stretch the shoulder straps) ensures they will stay unwrinkled until next season.

      The challenge with Guppyfriend is what to do with microfibers once you catch them. If you throw them in the trash bin they'll end up in landfills anyway... If we really want to stop pollution at home, we need to make sure that microfibers are properly recycled - that's why the closed loop service such as the one of Planetcare is the future.

    One thing I often think of is that layering works splendidly outdoors, with a backpack to put clothes in as the weather changes.
    It is less functional moving around town and getting to work in winter, when it is very cold outdoors and warm indoors.
    Then you need a good, warm covering coat or long jacket, and not too warm clothes beneath, so that you can unbutton your coat/jacket and put hat and gloves in your pockets or bag, and loosen your scarf as soon as you board a bus or train, or walk into a store and not be baked inside too heavy clothing.

    One tip I use if you use dryer sheets for drying your clothes, Save them and stuff them in your stored shoes and purses. It helps retain the shape and also helps gets rid of the musty smell. I also use used dryer sheets as cleanup wipes for cleaning the inside of the washing machine door, Window, and getting the dust off the knobs. Love your videos and the tip about the filter!

    Living in North Queensland Australia, it is almost the same clothes year round. Winter is one or two light jumpers (sweaters), jeans & one denim jacket.
    These are cleaned and stored for next winter - same as you do. I have had the same jeans & jacket now for 3-6 years.
    I spend more on summer clothing as I get more wear over 10 1/2 months of the year, I also layer same clothing for “winter” eg a cami underneath a summer shirt. Summer is lots of cotton and linens.
    Keep the good work - love ALL of your content.

    Super take on the wardrobe switch. Loved it! I have my own blog post on changing my wardrobe, but never even thought of including cleaning items as part of it. Superbe! (And will now link my post to yours for those tips.)
    Something I love to do when I change over, particularly from summer to winter, and clean items - is if an item is a favourite, but looking a little tired, I change the colour by dyeing it. Then when I re-open after storage, it is like having a completely new garment (that I now fits).

    Living in Florida, I never think about seasonality of clothes, but I like the idea of refreshing the wardrobe on a regular basis. This may also be why I still wear pastels to Thanksgiving dinner. How would you dress for the seasons in a sub-tropical climate?

    • @justineleconte
      @justineleconte  3 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      I see. Your wardrobe would be much more similar across seasons, just layering on top of summer clothes (e.g. cardigans, capes, pullunders, etc.). Yet I recommend you do a clear out + clean up of everything every 3-6 months, to make sure that your clothes, which will be on high rotation, remain pretty and well cared for 💚

    Instead of lavender bags, I keep a lavender scented candle in my wardrobe. It had such a strong scent it overwhelms the whole room before even lighting it. So I keep it in a cardboard box inside the back of the wardrobe, which just gives a reasonable soft scent.

    This is a wonderful series from October 2021 so I doubt my comment will add much but it has saved me so much washing that I have to share. This trick has saved me the dry cleaning that seems necessary sometimes. For example there is a still perfect jacket used over summer no stains but under arms are well, under arms. This was where I would give in and send it to the dry cleaners. Not any more. Working in a theater one summer an old hand shared a secret with me for keeping costumes "clean"" Vodka!. You get a cloth good and wet with the plain vodka and daub well. Works for shoes that have been left too long as well. If you can get the "80 proof" (more alcohol less water) seriously don't drink this stuff but since it has more vodka it does an even better job at cleaning. Hope this is accurate and helpful AG

    Great video! I will switch from plastic bins to cloth and that was very interesting about the microfiber! I was so suprised how much plastic waste is produced by only 3 loads! Many states in US are doing away with plastic shopping bags and here we are throwing an equivalent of a bag in the ocean every 3 loads!

    The filter thing is so cool!🤩 I solved the problem, with microplastics in clothes, by only buying and using non-plastic garments (except elastane, which releases a very small amount of microplastics). But I love that you brought the topic and a solution up🤩🌸💐

    • @justineleconte
      @justineleconte  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      that's a great way to go. However most garments (even 100% natural fabrics) use polyester thread, for instance, because cotton thread just breaks way too quickly. So it's really hard to not produce microfibers at all unfortunately...

    I use cedar balls instead of moth balls for storage of my cashmere and merino wool sweaters. They seem to work quite well. Clothes don’t get that horrible chemical smell from the moth balls. The only thing I’ve found with the cedar balls is that twice a year I have to take sandpaper to them to re-release the cedar smell to be more effective again. I have forgotten to sandpaper them for over a year but they do still seem to work at keeping the bugs and moths away.

    Here in the desert, our winters aren't too bad, i can wear most items year round. For heavier clothes we hang or shelve them in a separate closet, some wrapped in the blankets. And the sachets. A few years ago i began the replacement of all the plastic boxes with wire baskets and other fabric bags. Those plastic vacuum space saver bags were wasting money. Their quality disappeared shortly after they were introduced and they only last one season.

    Thank you so much for the filter recommendation! I’ve been researching ways to deal with this, but most of the systems I’ve heard about in the US only deal with catching the fibers. This is the first system I’ve heard of that has a way to recycle the collected waste!

    I'm from South Africa in a region where winters aren't too cold so I just layer during winter and I'm also a minimalist so my wardrobe stays as it is during the year, apart from decluttering or adding pieces of course. Very grateful for that. I can't bear the thought of wearing thick winter garments for long periods of time. Thanks for the tips!! I've been storing stuff the wrong way!!!!

      I'm in Australia and I don't see the point of storing away clothes either as the seasons aren't so clear cut. One day on Christmas could be anywhere from 15 to 35 degrees. The only thing worth storing away would be summer dresses since the window of opportunity to wear them is much shorter.
      Wearing heavy knits does kind of suck too, I agree with you! Especially heavy winter coats. I don't think I'd survive a super cold place haha

    • @beulahbenade4098

      @@katyb2793 I would definitely not survive a cold place. First of all I don't have suitable clothes or shoes. I own one coat and one pair of boots. I don't like pants so I have lots of summer dresses. And also I would become very depressed when a winter lasts too long. Even our winter, where maybe two weeks are really cold and dark, affects my mood!!
