Hey Spenser, is that 24mm FD you have the one with the S.S.C written on it or is that the later iteration of it that does not have that written on it ?

Late to the party but I’ve been shooting video with a GH2 paired with a 35-70mm Canon FD and a 16D anamorphic. I love the look and feel of this combination although I have to zoom in completely for the image to fill the sensor therefore the 85mm prime is the more practical choice. I have a few video examples that i shot using the setup mentioned on my TH-cam page if you wanna check them out...

@@spensersakurai That's super rad. It's guys like you and him that I'd love to grab a coffee with and just talk through your process. Not to knock on anybody, but there's so many *hype* cinematography channels on TH-cam dedicated to getting the "cinematic" look through LUTs and workarounds. It's refreshing to find someone who sees the value in slowing things down, and really considering how to get a beautiful image without slapping a $10 teal/orange LUT onto a timeline with photoshopped 2.35:1 bars and crazy transitions. For what it's worth, you've definitely gained a fan. 🤙

Very cogent and valuable video as everything you discussed matches my own finding over many years now... I use 50-year-old (or more) Takumar M-42 (pre-Honywell) optics for exactly the reasons you mentioned. It is funny the old Canon AE1 was a mark in the sand being the first of the cheaper plastic Canon cameras (and from there on) but with an older metal lens (even at the time) making it a 60-year old lens too. I really liked the follow-focus gears you showed but at $160 each, they are a bit pricy notwithstanding that I have a 10-lens collection.

This video was really comforting to see. I shoot on a vintage Nikkor glass set (24-180mm) from the 1960-70's almost exclusively, my 105mm being my favorite portrait lens of all time. The lenses were my dad's when he was in college and as I started out at MICA, he gave them to me. Currently I'm shooting with the lenses on a ZCam E2 with a Metabones M4/3-F mount adapter, with an added Black Promist 1 when I need a dramatic highlight blur.

I am getting some vintage minolta in my neck of the woods : 28 / 35 / 50 a 35-70mm and a 58mm. I have a dumb adaptor and a speedbooster to use on my GH5. Are there any benefits getting FD lenses SSC vs the Minolta?

All lenses look different. Its just preference.

@@spensersakurai hi! Yes. Just wondering if their sharpness, bokeh, color rendition... Are miles apart that adding FD SSC makes sense or if the Minolta are good enough

when using these lenses on Bmpcc4k... what are the solutions for handheld stabilization?

    • @aholder4471
      @aholder4471 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I'd say gimbal or post. But I'll let someone else answer who might have a better solution. I do wish the BMD would add IBS to their next camera. I think they will have to because they're running out of things to upgrade anyway. But of course the standard answer is that it's a cinema camera and the Arri doesn't have it...blah, blah, blah. But it would be super nice option to have and I'm sure welcomed by almost everyone that loves BMD.

    There's a canon FD 24mm f1.4 for sale on eBay for $7500

  • @EugeniaLoli

The only problem with the vintage lenses, is that they're not wide-enough (the 24mm here is quite rare, as you said). For action, or modern filmmaking, you need really wide, and back then, they didn't know how to make them wide and fast at the same time. Other than that, vintage lenses are much nicer than modern clinical lenses.

Nice review, sounds great and the quality at the end of the video looked very nice! Im new to all of this and need some help.
For the Blackmagic 4K wich lens of these would you recommend for some high quality cinematic nature videos? And also is there an adapter needed or will the lens fit directly?

Something overlooked is camera lenses from that period were designed for SLR with flipup mirror...lense design needed to accommodate this and it needed compromises..design was to thrown focus a further distance from the film to accommodate mirror sweeping up...wide angles designed as inverted telephotos..,.full frame cameras and particular range finders retained tradional designs ..these were for ortho chromatic B&W film..colour and pan chromatic film ,.1960s demanded redesign ....Nikon produce fantastic optics...these should also be seriously considered perticulary those from 1980s...their prices now are giveaway Thank you for V informative video..

Hi! I am smitten by your set up. As a beginner I went ahead and ordered all of this and I can’t seem to get the lens to attach to my darn camera. Do you offer any type of classes on this? I’m lost.

You need to convert the lenses to EF. Or use an adapter for mirrorless cameras

The FD 1.8 is such a good deal, I got mine for like $30 and looks great, better than a stock lens on cheaper cameras especially on cropped sensors like m43 (more like 100mm though unless you use a speedbooster)

Noob comment/question. I have a GH4 and bought a couple of Canon FD's. The adapter I got was only about $10 and has an aperture ring that is already unclicked. Would this not be the ideal method, or am I missing something?
Either way, great video. Love your channel, and I greatly appreciate seeing a professional who uses similar cameras and lenses. Thank you Spenser!!

How can you not mention the HELIOS, and all the other Soviet lenses that were made based on Carl Zeiss schematics. Crazy swirly bokeh, even better than Biotar lenses! The most unique of them all!!
