Thank you Unherd for hosting and talking to Dougald. His insights are deep and essential. I don’t agree with most of the comments here which are very critical of his message. We need new ways of relating to the world we live in, ourselves and each other and there is no clear cut path/ answer or solution. This truth seems to ‘trigger’ and bore a lot of people here… Thank you Dougald and Flo!
It took me a bit because I kept thinking of the kid's father in Home Alone and he didn't look anything like this guy. Then I finally remembered the scary guy next door. You must have been watching Christmas movies over the holidays.
@@farinshore8900 On this showing, he means a return to traditions of smallholding, which hopelessly ignores all of the major contributors to environmental damage such as the existence of the armed forces, advertising, and more pertinently the socially unnecessary money system itself. The traditions we ought to re-embrace are those of mutual aid and solidarity which will be required to overcome the profit system.
Sorry, he talks a lot without saying much. And then his friend's funny definition: A problem without a solution is not a problem? That leads to nowhere and everywhere at the same time... And again the hubris of the environmentalists, that they believe they can reverse not only man-made climate change, but also the much bigger changes that are happening without human intervention. There is so much dishonesty and there are so many definitions put forward by the activists and sold as absolute truth that they are now rightly perceived as a quasi-religious group. Short answer: No Long answer: Possibly after a breakdown, but the likely answer is still no. Once the cat is out of the bag, it's hard to put it back in.
After watching for 10 minutes, I can say that it is pointless expecting an English literature graduate, even from Oxford University, having studied Broadcast Journalism, and worked as a BBC journalist, to offer any insight into Earth's future climate, when there's no sign of STEM knowledge, only concern and worry. Typical! It needs an examination of the weather data collection, analysis and presentation. Why have their quality deteriorated, as the crisis escalates. Why are inconvenient observations and questions suppressed? Shouldn't the information originating from experts be better understood? There's plenty of information available, yet the Establishment refuses to participate in Informed Discussion with those having concerns about their conclusions. For example, the Sun influences the Earth's Climate, yet that is rarely, if ever, discussed. Discussing the Climate Emergency and how to stop it, isn't addressing the underlying problem: we need to understand the mechanisms involved, and the Establishment don't understand, while they have an unlimited supply of taxpayers money to waste on their misunderstanding.
Climate is changing, as it always has. Is it a crisis? Only if we allow the eejit alarmists to prevent us from developing/delivering useful solutions, based on data and rational thought, not fearful, ignorant emotion.
@iankclark We've had over 20 years of Worry, and the Establishment still haven't acknowledged that the Global Electric Circuit greatly influences the Weather and Climate.
No one denies that the climate changes over time and even most scientists in the so called denier camp will acknowledge that humans have some impact on the climate, albeit nominal. Assuming for the moment that they are wrong and we are having a greater impact, where's the emergency? Are masses of people flocking inland from coastal regions due to sea level rise or are property values going up? Is land rapidly becoming uninhabitable? Are we seeing massive crop failures around the world or an increase in output? Are our hospitals being filled with people who are suffering from the negative effects of climate change? Where in the world are people en masse suffering distress due to a change in the climate. There's a vast difference between routine change and an emergency.
@@martinhd28v1 Climate Deniers don't deny that the Earth's Climate is changing, it always has. What they say is that there is negligible evidence that changes in the 'global temperature' (which is a very inexact measurement), and deemed to be an increase, is due to Mankind's activities. This is based on the Sun being the major influence, which the Establishment refuses to consider.
Unherd, you have let your mum, dad and yourself down giving this pretentious, boring individual a platform. 15 minutes of this interview was more than enough.
I think this fellow is saying that with climate change as with covid 19 that there is no "answer" to these problems. He is saying that humanity has to instead adapt to our changing circumstances in the world. Very much how we humans have always adapted to changes of circumstance through history. Live our lives the best that we can and find our own happiness however we find it.
I really appreciated this conversation. It's very hard to meet the strange and troubling moment we find ourselves in in a way that feels both emotionally and intellectually honest. I think Dougald and Vanessa (who wrote Hospicing Modernity) both do that. I think they're both ahead of their time, though in the end what they're really pointing us towards is ancient wisdom. Glad their voices are out there.
We do not want (to return to) regressive traditionalism. We need true progress, finally. To preserve what has value, while moving towards greater value. To protect and advance.
Thank you! A very clear exposition of views which I have found both practical (dropped threads) and illuminating (Swedish idiosyncrasies!). Also, despite the apocalyptic view, strangely it has strengthened both hope and resolve! Sadly, as a retired finance business analyst with a very dodgy back hitting 70 - I'm not going to be much use on the land! Many thanks Unherd - another bright offering! 👏

Poor presentation (as usual, Flo) of much nuanced thinking with a remarkable lack of substance. He is almost like a politician, and how he avoids saying anything definitive. Apparently, the interviewer assumed that everybody knows what his book and various projects have already asserted.
The very first thing he says is 100 percent true. The environmental movement now cares more about politicizing abstractions of our planet than it does protecting local environments. It would industrialize wind and solar and spoil stretches of wilderness just to satisfy its own conscience.
