Hot-tapping is basically making a hole in a pipe or pressure vessel while it is still in service. Our crews trained and certified in-house to API 2201 specifications and experienced with the equipment of multiple manufacturers are able to perform any type of hot-tapping and plug setting operation. Our equipment allows us to perform hot-tapping and plug setting operations up to and including 48'' Class 600.
I've seen newer rigs that have the bypass in the drill head, so you only have to set 2 heads not 4.

All this so you can install a shut off valve in a line that couldn't be shut off for you to install it in the first place... wild.
It can also be used for giving a tap off point, repair and maintenance, change a leaky portion etc. Uses are many.

In terms of the length of pipeline there is really no limit; however, the machines each have a certain "boring length", and as such each machine is designed for certain range of operations
that is a lot of work !
why not shut it down for a few days or is that not plausible ?
Time is money. Pipeline isn’t flowing, money isn’t being made.
It could also be an essential supply. Like natural gas to heat homes, so a shutdown in the winter may not be acceptable.
Why not put the valve in in the first place?

It is also used for reparing a damaged part/section...
But i do absolutely agree, that the work and money, spent for this, is incredible..
Often, an outage is far more costly, so a bypass is created to avoid that.
I think the valve is just an example - it could be connecting to a new pipeline, a new user at that spot, or repaira like the other guy said
Any company that works on pipelines will have their finances worked out to the penny, and this much work and specialised equipment will be cheaper tham an outage - not to mention the work it would take to drain a miles long section of pipe
I think in this video just for example, hot tapping is not only for install the valve, it can also for install tee for new line
And yes it is very expensive and high risk, but it also worth, because they didn't need to shut down the line, so the production still can run while the pipe in repair/modification
