My argument about the speed limitation is; how can they limit a speed an E-bike to 15.5 MPH and NOT limit car engines to be limited to 70 MPH? just because it can go faster, doesn't mean you will go faster.
Infact going slower on a higher power E-Bike just results in a greater range , most people that want to buy a E-Bike want the reassurance that they will have enough power to make the trip, not max the motor out and ride around full throttle do maximum speed!
I don't drive and never have, i have heart failure so peddling a push bike is not recommended. so a E-Bike would be great, but not with these limitation.
I am forced to use public transport thanks to these laws.

@@andysmalley6889 to be fair, the speed limit at 15.5mph isn’t bad. Torque however is an issue but bike companies are now selling bikes that have 70-90nm bikes with 250w restricted motors and 36v batteries that are just as fast up to 15.5mph as their 750w 48v counterparts and in some cases faster.
When you realise you don’t need the speed you think you do it’s good.
I’d still like 20mph though. But small steps. The use of a throttle up to 15.5mph would be a good start and remove a barrier to entry to e-bikes for a lot of people.

Totally agree. If you can easily pedal at 15.5 mph, what difference does it make if you have a throttle capable of the same speed? It can't be to do with safety, we know that much.
I think the speed limit for ebikes should be raised to 20mph, for both pedal assist AND throttle.
If you want to go faster than that you should probably be looking at a petrol powered motorcycle of some description.

@@gedofgont1006 I’ve limited my Engwe Engine Pro to 20mph but because of the way the torque sensor works I rarely get passed 16mph on the flat. I’ve done the speed thing and if I was younger I’d pursue it further, but I own a Yamaha Tricity 300 and that does 70mph … that’s thrilling enough nowadays.

    Ebikes 2025
In 2025, new law will be going from 250w to 500w with speed staying at 15.5mph with a plus side being a throttle going from 3.7mph to 15.5mph the same as max speed which is good as 3,7mph is silly. They should allow whatever watt motor you want as this will not let you go any faster but get up hills easier that will assist those with health mobility issues. I have a 1000w which I bought in 2023 when I didn’t know about ebike laws. So am thinking to buy a 250w, but as this will change am holding on a little longer, I hope they can allow up to a 1000w motor before I have to sell this lovely bike for a 500w, but I think am dreaming. The laws are so harsh and unfair on those who have mobility issues or age against them. I do hope things can get better. There are many cars and motorbikes that can go over 100mph but can be driven on uk roads providing they stay within the speed limits, so it should be the same for ebikes.

People in cars over take me at 15mph, 20mph not so much and 25-27mph never overtake me. My belief is on foot paths 15.5 mph is ok. I always slow down when passing people and have courtesy for other people. But, on the road when your with vehicles its safer to be going 25mph, i dont have people overtaking me, ( unless and idiot trying to get home in a hurry) throttle is way better in many situations, i use throttle when i need to. It has saved me a couple of times, from cars, not ebikes. They are the way forward, and when the government see that, the better. They go on about saving the planet. Here, have a cardbored straw. But, when it comes to the things that would make a massive impact, they are like no, you can't do this and that. 500w isn't enough for heavier people. 1000w - 1500w is ok for that. It's not the power. But the speed they should be focusing on. Bmw m3, etc. can do massive speed, and they are legal. But the speed limit on a motorway is 70. You tell me that they do that speed. Because they dont! 15mph on foot maths but 25mph on roads is safer. They need to look at this. Its the speed they should be governing, not the watts of a motor.
