Hey there. Thanks for the post. I have (1) Tiger Oscar in my African Cichlid tank. I have about 20 African Cichlids. When the Oscar was first introduced, they were merely curious. During feeding time, they all gather together at the front of the tank and swim in a school. Use this time for your fish to brush up against one another and to get that closeness and comfort so they can get use to one another. I have now had the Oscar in the tank for 2 months now with ZERO problems.

So what kind of foods you give them all? As Oscar and mbuna have different diet! What food is best in that situation? Please

@DregeKerusoify of course there mbunas. Mbunas are very smart and aggressive fish so they would know how to hold their own I think peacocks would get bullied tho

I did this and the Oscar didn’t last, he was really aggressive too, but the African cichlids kept picking at it and wore it out. I think it died from stress and constantly having to take on more than one African cichlid. It never got a chance to settle in.

Thank you for watching. this is a part 1 I want to do a part 2 a week from adding so I can talk about what im doing to try make this work. Ive so far had to add more hiding spots in the tank, moved all hiding places around too. setting the tank temp at 76 witch is a bit low for african cichlids but I think will benefit for the first week. I do have a hospital tank ready for my fish and a big tank around 150 gal coming in a couple of months. So far i think adding them young and having them around the same size is important and a even ph helps. Please leave a comment!

Oscars are Alwsome Fish, very smart and they all have different personalities. Some Oscars are very aggressive and must be keep alone and others are community fish. I've been lucky with my Oscars. I have two Albinos Oscars, and two Zebra Oscars with Yellow Zebra cichlid, Jack Dempsey, Black Convict, 3 rainbow / 2 red tail sharks, 3 tinfoil barbs, and 3 Gourami. All aggressive fish. My Oscars get along with all of them, the Tank Boss my 11 inch Albino Oscar even regulates the other fish when they get to aggressive with each other. He goes and stops the bulling. A got a few videos up, if you want to check them out.

So many people claim to know exactly how the outcome will look. The reality is that you can never know with fish. All fish have very diverse character traits within a species. personally I have Africans and South Americans mixed and the tank is in perfect harmony.

My first attempt at this I had a juvenile oscar and a juvenile parrot together they actually started showing signs of mating I added some African cichlids and a kinyi tore the oscar up and killed him at night while no one was watching ... Second attempt. Adding a bigger oscar now he is the tank boss and grts along with everyone ( oh and returned the murderer kinyi) its been 2 months and he has 8 African tank mates and they're all doing fine. He Chaces them out of his personal space every once in a while but other than that he shows no aggression even allows certain fish to shadow him every once in a while.

You have a point my oscar was with 2 red zebras,1 African Butterfly & a Chinese algae eater and my oscar didn't bully them unless they had food, before I moved the oscar to a bigger tank I got a texas chiclid around the same size as the oscar,he took a couple of scales off the texas and I had to separate them so when I moved the oscar I put him in with a juvenile blood parrot and its been working like a charm

Doesn't make it right though, different diets and water parameters.
It's meant to be about caring for the fish, not being selfish, keeping fish that require different foods and conditions.

North american cichlids south american cichlids and African cichlids ALL speak different body language. This makes it a prison by language barrier.

I added my Oscar when young when there was only a peacock and a maingano left (changing over from rift lake to Oscar, so the maingano was from past fry and the peacock was really old) and they did pick on him a little at first.
After the peacock died of old age, the Oscar and maingano are buddies. Next cichlid challenge? I am growing out a Tropheus duboisi in another tank. I know they can be aggressive, but since he’ll be the new guy I am hoping it will work out.

New Zealand Cichlids That is incorrect. You have to add the Oscar when it’s young so it doesn’t identify the African Cichild as food. I literally had a 7-8 inch Oscar in a 55 eating crickets and it never fucked with my Haps and Peacocks

Don't do it please. I've been keeping and breeding Africans for 6yrs and have an Oscar tank. I would NEVER mix them. Can they coexist together? Probably but definitely not thrive. Africans are rift lake fish High PH High GH high Kh the exact opposite of Oscar's. Social behaviours, breeding behaviours, diet requirements are all different. Pretty much your putting a bunch of fish that speak different languages together with no interpreter. So instead of being able to enjoy watching their natural behaviour and beauty, it will be a tank just trying to survive. Africans are fast extremely active and aggressive fish, they can move through a tank at 60mph and not hit a thing and an oscar? Crashes into everything. Mbuna stress Haps out, they'd stress the life out of a young oscar and an oscar would be hard pressed to catch one without hurting itself. Anyone that says PH doesn't matter needs to talk to a fish vet and learn that it actually is very important. There's a reason you don't see many with 10-15yr old cichlids and most of the time it's due to improper care.

I have them both in my biggest tanks. A 55g and a 75g tank. They are happy, the african prefer hideaways and the oscars prefere open and large rock. My africans range from electric yellow, violet yellow tail, rainbow peacock, and other various ones. And a couple tiger oscars. Lost two in beginning, but moved them with ones that got along. Waiting on stand then i will upgrade to a 125g tank as well. Good luck all.

  • @Excuti
    @Excuti 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Yes you can. They can also live with those fish here that I have. African Cichlid, red tail shark, Dragon fish, Angelfish, Blood red parrot, and Dinosaur Bichir. And they also can live with other fish but you have to make some experiment. Beware before you putting Oscar in your tank. First, Add some fish for couple of days so they feel comfortable and feel home last and not least put Oscar so there won't be any issue in the tank.
I hope it helped and also I can make a very short video that those fish I described are in my tank and are very happy and not aggressive. :)

Although they seem fine and may work together, the water conditions required are different for their best care and longest quality life potentials. I went along with the LFS suggestions as a newbie and had mixmatched fish because i thought they looked cool. but as time went on, the natural settings and needs of the fish became paramount. People will look to videos for answers and direction. I try to help them have good experiences with less troubles.

ive had a mbuna tank and i added an oscar when i was little the oscar got to about 8”-10” and it wasnt that he wasnt big enough to stand his ground it was just that he was relaxed when he swam and the mbuna could quickly nip his fins from behind amd swim into some decorations. mbuna are simply to relentless fast and aggressive eventually the oscar got chased out of the tank. i also had put the oscar into qt to regrow his fins a couple times and that was at his biggest size.

The secret is to add more than one oscar. OR to add the oscar first before the cichlids have a chance to astablish dominion.

    No good idea.
The Oscar is quite small right now but this will change soon and I do not like to put fish together that have different requirements to the water. Even if this works sometimes it doesn't mean it is they way it should be done.

I have an Oscar in with a Red Devil both are 10 inches long , had to divide the tank cause the Red Devil and my Parrot had fry and became ferocious . Removing anything sharp in your tank is important , their biting doesn't harm each other , its the speed they swim at running into rocks that will hurt them

I have my own pecking order as well and that auratus (yellow stripe guy) will kick the sh&& out of anything in any tank. Dont support these fish (for anyone reading).
I own a mix 75g african tank and an 56g auratus (1) tiger barb(15) Red Tailed Shark(1) Buenos Aries Tetra (3) tank (this combo works).
Aggression with this combo is follow. Auratus ,redtailed, and the tertras mix with the barbs equally with there own small pecking orders as a shoal.

I've noticed with oscars if you put them in when theyre smaller with other cichlids and bottom feeders like plecos and coreys they will get used to them and are less likely to be that mean to them when they get big. If they're already big when you put them in it's a different story.

African cichlids really only get aggressive with fish their own size. I have a red devil and a tricolor around 7" and I added a jack depsey and oscar around 2" and they treated them like their own guppies. My blue johani chased them a couple times because he had a chance not to be the tank whimp xD

Oscar cichlids require a lower pH bad African cichlids
And after cichlids like their water harder than Oscar cichlids
Also going to add that it takes days for fish to get used to pH and all that other stuff

And you are correct but the thing is I got my fish from a New Zealand pet store and we are a long long way from were there from so his parents were tank raised and his parents, parents were tank raised etc etc. In my opinion I think that People should be more worried about tank size and clean water then a increased ph level. Thanks for your comment and I couldent agree with you more

They also have different diets, Mbuna will suffer without a mostly vegetarian diet and the Oscar will suffer with that diet.
It's upto you to be a responsible fishkeeper if you're not, don't post videos encouraging it to other people without good knowledge.

You can have jack Dempsey and oscars together but however JDs are known to gang up if theres 2 or more of the JDs together against other fish. Kne Jd fish is fine with oscars

How do feed Mbuna that a primarily vegetarian and South american cichlids that arent at the same time? So many things wrong about this, itll just encourage more people to keep fish incorrectly, just because you can, doesn't make it right.

I have a community tank of South American and African cichlids all bought different sizes and different times some even giving to me while in their past tank they were aggressive even towards an aggressive flower horn my trick was moving the pots around in the tank the slate and plants pretty much everything that was moveable every water change and every time I got a new fish so they weren't so territorial of their spot so they weren't mean to the new fish.

    • @newzealandcichlids1874
      @newzealandcichlids1874  9 ปีที่แล้ว

thanks for the comment. Yeah 1 of the reasons why cichlids fight is over territory so moving things around does help as it takes it away every time you change things around

Hi Jonathan, I have just watched your video which was of interest to me, ask myself have a pair of tiger oscars which are approximately 6 inches in size. I have been wonder if I could add them to my African 240 litre tank. After watching the behaviour of your demasoni blue cichlid I have decided not to add my two oscars to my African tank because as you say and I totally agree that African cichlids can be very aggressive. I have about 30 African cichlids in my tank, yellow labs, three haps, orange banded and yellow banded dubois, several aratus, etc. However I do know some people who successfully mix African cichlids with American cichlids, but it is in my opinion a bit of a unknown thing as the personality and temperament of these fish can differ from each individual fish. I've been in the hobby to know that, as I'm sure you have too. I wish you the best of luck with your hobby and I hope your oscar settles in its new tank and gets along with its new tank mates. Thanks for sharing your video, I enjoyed watching it, I hope you reply, best wishes from Dennis

Yup, just learned this the hard way. I put in a convict a month ago and they chased him but he survived and is living great with the 4 African yellow labs and mbuna’s. Just put Oscar in and they pecked him so I put him in a breeder tank for a week and dropped him back in 2 days ago. Watched a while all good. Woke up yesterday morning and they destroyed him near death very bad and even the convict was biting his mouth. They ripped him apart.

RT sharks are actually members of the catfish family there not real sharks its a catfish , there semi aggressive so they be fine with other cichlid fish

I would not do it due to the Philippines levels. African cichlids are happier in higher pH. I kept malowi, and kept pH at 8,0. Others I kept as high as 9.0. Oscars would not thrive on those tanks.

  • @terrorrush700

Man. I bought a baby tiger Oscar yesterday he is about 2inches and I put him together with my African cichlids almost the same size as he is but they killed my baby Oscar. I have 3 new cichlids that I put in the tank but they're much smaller than him about an inch so I'm worried that they might die but the other cichlids wanted the Oscar maybe.

  • @michaelbeaston7223

Hi I just did the same thing with my oscar fish because my cichlid was looking a little lonely and the guy at the pet store actually recommended for me to put the Oscar in with the cichlid because the Oscar would feed on feeder fish and the cichlid could consume the floating pellets but I had I've noticed that it's feeding time the African cichlid tries to consume all the food and leave none for the Oscar but the Oscar does have a tendency to be able to get a few pallets at a time but then added maybe 10 feeder fish into the tank and the Oscar has already gobbled down 3 of them in a matter of 2 days

Crack up if I had a pet store Its somthing I wouldent recommend to customers lol Dont get me wrong It can work as ive seen it with my own 2 eyes with my mates tanks but its a lot of trail and error but thats the same with most cichlids. My one stared of shy when he got added and was a bit hard feeding as the Africans are pretty dominating but when he got a good size advantage on them he was the one eating the most. thanks for the comment
