I dont want to go out and buy them and put them in the tank with the other 2 if they are not good tank mates. My tank is a 120 and I only want to have the 4 fish in my tank.

Hey Jason, I've been getting a bunch of grief about my Blood Parrot being in my African Cichlid tank. So much that I decided to make a video explaining how he even ended up in there. While researching I came across your vid and it was spot on! You have an awesome mix of some monsters in this tank...
I was so happy to see it I sent you a shout out and linked to your video from mine. Thanks for helping me feel better about my African/American mix 😊

Great explanation on why that tank works. It really helps to know the personality of your fish and the the general aggressiveness levels of a species in general. For example, you would never mix any Parachromis with a gold ocellatus-the Parachromis would get beat upon and die of stress overload.

I kept African and South American cichlids together for a long time without any problems. I think it worked out because I got them all when they were little and they grew up together. The only time I had a problem was when my Jack Dempseys wanted to breed. They got their own tank and everything went back to normal.

I've had a similar experience with an American cichlid tank I briefly used as a hospital tank for Africans. I had a mix of oscars, rainbow fish, angel fish, peacocks all got on just fine. Added a beaten up 3 inch yellow lab which was by far the smallest fish in the tank...he became the tank boss within 48 hours and had all the big fish in the corners. He only left the rainbows alone as they are so active.

How to introduce adult fish into an already established Aquarium?
I have a 55g that I want to transfer the fish both American and African cichlids to a 125g established aquarium.
The 125g are also american and African cichlids.
Water parameters are almost exact. Ph6.8 7.0 temp 80, nitrate between 20/40 , nitrite 0, alkalinity ideal, hardness between soft and hard
55g are aprox 15 months old, and very healthy.
The 125 g are 2 to 3yrs old, are very healthy also.
What concerns me is the shock that the transfer will do to the fish.
For example,if the 55g fish will be traumatized to potentially die after placing them into the established aquarium.
The 125g fishes are already comfortable and now introducing adult fish may startle them also. If this makes sense.
110g filtration on the 55g and 600g filtration on the 125g
    55g has 11 fish 3-6in with 9in biggest fish
    125g has 18 with 4- 5 in with 7in on It's biggest fish.
    Any advice
    Thanks

One reason people may not like mixing these fish is because they want to create a realistic habitat - a
little piece of nature. So they do an African tank, Central American tank, etc.

We all approach the hobby in our own way. I am one who likes to recreate biotypes as closely as possible; sometimes requiring species-specific tanks. I am also one who doesn't care for hybrids. That being said, hobbies are for enjoyment. There are no rules or laws that govern a hobby, unless you are entering a competition that has standards, such as canine shows. The labradoodle and other mutts like my own make great dogs. Tanks are for enjoyment. If it works, while hassle it. I personally would never mix only because my interests are different. I have been guilty of tank shaming. Hobbies should be places that bring us together, not drive us apart.

One of the best reasons I’ve heard for being careful about mixing aggressive fish from different regions and/or families: differences in agonistic behavior, ie body language. It might be harder to understand threatening postures if you didn’t evolve together. Not as much of an issue with fish that are not very aggressive to begin with, but when you’re counting on intimidation to avoid fights, and the other fish isn’t backing down because it just doesn’t understand, you could have injurious fights breaking out. Something to think about.

You can keep Africans and South American cichlids together and succeed...it's just not a smart thing to do because they really are totally different fish who require different water parameters to be happy and healthy. pH is one of the big things. Africans prefer a pH of 8.3 while South Americans order a pH closer to 7.0. The trace elements you can get are also different for each. I have a 8 inch Flowerhorn who is in his own 55 gallon tank and I have a bigger 240g African tank...I do keep the water parameters close to what their natural habitat would be. My pH in the African is usually around 8-8.3 and around 7.2 in the Flowerhorn tank... temperatures are also different. African tank is usually 79-82F while the Flowerhorn tank is at 83-85F.

You won't ever have disease or any fish problems if you go with a dirty substrate Mud Cat with sand plenty of live plants and Plenty of Fish feed the tank rotted leaves out of a lake your fish will thrive everything will balance itself naturally no need to cycle a tank either with a dirted substrate

I'm thankful I'm not the only one here who thinks its all based on the temperament of your fish I have a peacock an Oscar and a featherfin in my 125 together my featherfin has been with me for years outliving my other fish and I got a peacock 1 year ago and realized it doesn't show any aggression at all it swims along side the featherfin and sleeps in the same cave as it every day and I decided to add an Oscar and they all just don't mess with eachother at all

Well I have a tank that has community fish 60 gallon. Has threadfin rainbows, longfin danios Corydorias an albino bristlenose pleco a pile of mystery snails and now 1 single shell dweller a male Neolamprologus Hequii. with his shells in one corner. I wasn't sure how that would work out. But it has been fine for a little over a month now. Sometimes he tries to chase the corys around but not overly so the big bristlenose will come in and sit on his shells and he won't try to do a thing about that. (I think hes scared of the pleco LOL) He swims around the whole tank and does just fine. Comes back to his shells when he wants and when the Pleco isn't being HAHAHA try and move me. Its a bit of a sad story how he ended up being the only Hequii from what was once a substantial group but thats for another time.

I have an oscar in a giant planted community aquarium alongside a large school of ember tetras. I also have a group of about 6 celestial pearl danios. As far as I can tell the Oscar never attacks the smaller fish. He ignores them. I tried adding a new oscar and it was hunting my tetras and was tearing up my plants. I had to take that one back to the store.
It's totally down to temperament of the oscar. My oscar has been coexisting in a tank with plants and nano fish for 6 years now.

The only fish they left alone were the bichirs and ropefish.

I have 14 tanks with various species, small tropicals, cichlids-dwarf to large, common and fancy goldfish. I have tried Johanni’s with CA/SA cichlids without success. Their health deteriorated within weeks. Most probably due to the fact that NYC tap water is soft and acidic. I refuse to play around with water hardness or PH. I just keep together SA, CA and river dwelling African cichlids, such as Kribensis and Red Jewels, which I have a batch of fry from both species. On another subject matter, last week unexpectedly, my former 25 cents feeder goldfish, which I purchased over a year ago to raise spawned. I now have hundreds of week old fry. I hate to feed most of them to my cichlids but there is no way I can raise hundreds of goldfish. I’m hoping nature kicks in and there will be a high mortality rate within the next couple of weeks. So far no losses. So until then, they are being well cared for. Enjoy your channel.

I am tempted to try this. I have 1 large oscar. We recently lost his buddy I think to old age. No obvious signs of disease well taken care of tank. The Oscar seems to be depressed. Seems weird in a fish but oscars are kind of special. I have some frontosa that are shy and seem to be pretty laid back. About 5 of them. They are growing good. A few years old 6-8inches. They are moving from a 75 to a 280 with 55 gallon sump. Unsure if trying to find a larger Oscar buddy is better or to try to mix them. Thoughts?

    • @PrimeTimeAquatics
      @PrimeTimeAquatics  3 ปีที่แล้ว

They're both often laid back for a large cichlid. I might not mix them though just because their personalities are different.

  • @wackyfiasco

I’m going to be really unpopular: My tiger Oscar grew up around mbuna (really old ones though, 11 yr olds, save one maingano) and the diet issue worked out. Why? Because I hand feed my oscar his own food, when he indicates he is hungry: Live insects, bug bites, that sort. Conversely I have a feeder that cranks out vegetarian pellets and then I also hand feed some veggie wafers, cukes and spinach to the last maingano in the tank and the new duboisi.
I also have an army of thousands of tiny, local hydrobe snails that happily clean up after everyone (if they ever invent cleaning nanobots, they should design them to mimic these snails).
I WISH my Oscar would eat some veg. The live superworms and crickets he gets have a good amount of fiber in their chitinous exoskeletons at least.

  • @andystokes8702

It is interesting what you said about fish personalities and how they can change overnight. I bought 7 Eliotti's Cichlids with a view to breeding, Even though they were only half grown the dominant male selected his female of choice and chased everybody else around the tank relentlessly. I had to remove the other 5. He and his chosen lady formed a really strong bond and they spawned regularly for several months. As soon as I removed one batch of fry they would spawn again within a couple of days and he was a very attentive father. There were no other fish in the tank and after a few months and without any warning he turned on his partner and tried to kill her, it didn't matter where she tried to hide he was actively hunting her. I had to get her out of the tank immediately or he would have killed her.

People in india are keeping fish that are not compatible. Lets say for example a goldfish with an oscar , etc you get the idea. In 10 gallon tank for life saying the fish will grow according to the tank. Which is literally kind of an abuse. WC are done on monthly basis.
