    Well I had a tank with a nice mix of fish. Then I got a beautiful jewel cichlid. He just about ate all the fish and the ones he didn’t eat he nipped off their fins. So I got a separate tank for him and repopulated the big tank. So 4 months later the jewel cichlid started laying on the bottom. This morning he was floating on top of the water. I did right by separating him but the deal is…. Keep a cichlid only tank and get him some similar fish. He did live 4 months. Tank Parma were right on. I guess I’ll take out the vegetation from his tank and put it in the pea puffer tank.
    Oh…..I love Quebec and I love your channel♥️🐟

    Giant danios actually do very well in my 75gal tank (I got the idea from the local specialty fish/aquatics store who did the same). I have 5 of them (enough for them to school) and they generally stay at the surface, swimming all around. My cichlids (1 massive peacock, 1 large jewel, 6 small-medium mbuna) pay 0 attention to them. They will literally swim right next to them and ignore them, but then chase another cichlid if it gets too close. They are a pretty and entertaining addition to my tank. I also have a synodontis and pictus catfish (both are large) as well as 2 sailfin plecos and 6 mystery/apple snails (also completely left alone by cichlids) in the same tank.

    • @doctorpurohit
      @doctorpurohit ปีที่แล้ว

      Don't feed the cichlids for a day or two, and then watch your danios disappear.... That's what had happened with me when I was out for a weekend and forgot to switch on my auto feeder.... Had 5 of them (Giant Danios small sized) and was left with just 2, that too injured... 😔

    • @ZodDamn1t
      @ZodDamn1t ปีที่แล้ว

      @@doctorpurohit why would I do that, though? Having a happy tank is about creating and maintaining balance. Not feeding them for days is an obvious disruption to that balance.

    I was usually lucky with mixing fish. As you meantion the parameters between the rift lakes. So some will have less luck mixing Lake Tanganyika fish with Lake Malawi cichlids. There seems to be a push to remind people of the older "natural" parrot cichlids with the artificially combined hybrid (or blood) parrot cichlids. There is the original South American (or true) parrot cichlid, Hoplarchus psittacus (14 inches TL), but ther is also a Central American fish called the Macaw cichlid or Moga or Nic, Hypsophrys nicaraguensis, that people also called Parrot cichlid. There is some interesting relationships formed among Central American cichilds. This peaceful Parrot cichlid, Moga (~10 inches TL) could also be called the Parenting cichlid because of its relationship with two of the meanest Central American cichlids the giant Parachromis dovii, Lagunero or Dovii or Wolf cichlid (> 28 inches SL) and the small Hypsophrys nematodes or Neet or Poor man's tropheus or Blue Demon cichlid (< 5 inches TL). Neets have been known to occupy cleaning stations to clean parasites from other fish however when Lagunero shows up Neets go from being cleaners to meals. Neets are general very aggressive against other fish (particularly Mogas) establishing territory in sections of streams and lakes they want but Lagunero will clear these areas of Neet colonies. Lagunero produce so many offspring that, particularly in rivers and creeks, many will get lost. Moga couples will adopt and protect the fry of Lagunero from other possible predators in cluding Neets. Lower concentration of Neet colonies means more room for Moga populations. Also Lagunero has more riverine cousin Parachromis motaguensis, Mota or False Yellowjacket guapote or Red Tiger cichild (12 TL). Mota looks like a small over-muscled Lagunero, and some people likened Mota to a small Lagunero or Mini-Dovii. In an aquarium setup the Lagunero tries to eliminate Mota before any other fish. The is another Central American cichlid known as the mini-Dovii is Chiapaheros grammodes, Sieve cichlid (< 8 inches SL). Sieve cichlid has a neighboring relationship with Vieja hartwegi and Vieja breidohri as they live in the same streams. Vieja hartwegi, Tailbar cichlid (

    I current keep ancistrus, clown loaches and a red tailed shark (and a single peacock) with my mbunas, which works well. I have been considering adding a jewel to the tank as well.
    I never worry much about water parameters, as all my tanks just run on water straight from the tap. However, I have my doubts about the diet. The ancistrus and labeo are fine with a green food diet, and the loaches can snack on the snails whenever they want. But I am worried about if the jewel would get the nutrients that it needs, on a green diet. Any thoughts on this?

    I discovered peacock cichlids and love them. Have added some and also a small green terror. I have many hiding spots and distractions and so far no problem but had no idea about the difference in water parameters. Wife will kick me out if I get new tank. I have 10g quarantine tank and 125 g. Any suggestions short of unloading these fish? I’ve heard shops will take fish in these circumstances but I’d hate the guy who mislead me to benefit from these beautiful fish. I not only told him what my established tank had in it but also showed him pics just in case I was wrong in the names.

    A lot of Central American cichlids come from Rift Lake like water, as do many livebearers . I would still not keep then together however. Livebearers will become lunch and Central A. Cichlids are very aggressive and hungry! I have seen many people keep the high pH/hardness Rainbows with Africans. Turquoise Rainbows are common; they like the top of the water and are super quick.
    I try to keep my fish by continent… but there is a loach for every tank!

      They would probably end up being feed fish. Too slow for Africans if the tide turns.

    • @QuebecCichlides
      @QuebecCichlides  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've never done it. My guess would be yes, as long as the sizes are safe and the boesmani don't fit in the bleekeri's mouth

    I used to keep some Americans with them. Green terror, oscar, etc. Had a jack Dempsey for awhile but it didn't work out for many reasons. The african cichlids in that tank were older and well adapted to some lowish ph values.

    Mentioning water parameters is sort of misleading. Only if they are wild caught should this be a consideration. Tank breed fish are usually at local water parameters that are not close to native waters.
    I had Kulhi loaches in my African tanks since day 1 in the 70's and 80's. There were never any issues.
    Convicts did well at Malawi water parameters and breed frequently. In the 70's, I was adding Malawi salts to my aquarium with no change in behavior. This was for both the white and natural types of convicts. At that time, I was running dolomite and crushed coral too.
    If you are adding 'Jewels', H. Exsul are great, but caution in numbers. In a 110g, there is not enough room for more than a pair ;)
    Giant Danios are a perfect dither fish. I don't remember a time where I have not had them in an African tank. Get at least 4.
    Caution on Red Tail sharks. They are great in a rift tank. But only if you get one. They are terror on each other if you have more than 1.

    You talk a lot about water parameters but this doesn’t apply to most tank raised fish as they have adapted to new water conditions. Correct?
