On the timing where the gear is on the right side where you rotate the engine, should that dot on that sprocket line up with the triangle on the right side as well?
Make sure you put a Chain guard on this quad before you brake a Case, I cant believe as bad as quad looks it isnt broke already, You got a good deal-Around me there are (2) honda 450r both have broken cases one is Rod and other is chain fell off, they want $1,000 ea non running
Honestly I do the same thing, and it's mostly because you're so eager to tear into it and don't want to deal with waiting for a wet quad to dry. Water in the engine is far worse than a little dust lol.
I am unsure why people do not take care of their machines but I am thankful because that means cheap fun projects for the rest of us who like to turn wrenches and make a buck on the side.
12:10 that's a hot start lever, so when the quad is pretty hot after like 15 mins of riding you can pull that little lever and it will make it easier to start
That lever that you didn’t know what is is the hot start. It is on all carbuerated 4 stroke Mx bikes and quads. It is basically the opposite of the choke it gives more air rather than fuel for starting when you have been running it a lot and when it’s hot
If the intake valves are worn too much you won’t be able to shim them anymore. Then you would have to replace the intake valves and in some case the head has to be resurfaced for new valves. Learned from experience. Honda uses titanium valves that are softer than the hardened head which causes the problem
Honda does not use titanium valves, they use steel. And it's not the head wearing out, it's the valves. Also, it's always recommended to lap the valves and get new seats cut when putting in new valves for best results, not only "in some cases"
The small lever under the clutch is the hot start. It opens a valve in the carb to helps with starting while hot. With out an air filter it will bust up. Pump the gas 2 or 3 times before you kick it dont give it gas while starting you can brake your leg or the case from kick back.
Don't let the haters get you down. Quad prices are going through the roof and 450s are a hot commodity. Good deal for $1000. Get it running, clean them plastics. Get some new grips. You'll definitely be able to triple your money.
@@2vintage yea, do you have any good recommendations I should do bbn to it? It has new aftermarket bars, nerf bars, big gun exhaust, and new rear tires
Looks like a hot start lever to me. Nothing to do with the choke or decompression release. And in the future to save yourself a lot of headache, buy a hand held impact tusk makes one, they are cheap and you apply pressure while hitting it with a hammer, this will loosen/tighten all those easily stripped out screws such as the carb ones. The impact will make it where you never fuss with carb bolts again when they are corroded in and hard to get out without damaging.
I never power wash new projects. Who knows if there’s open gaskets or (like he said) bad exhaust gasket. Causing water to leak into the engine. Maybe I’ll do a light hose washing but never power wash unless you know that there’s no bad gaskets, open air filter boxes, etc.
I was thinking the same, but now in Wisconsin it's below freezing in certain spots so they probably have the hose disconnected. But could still wipe it down
I know you said its an 2004, but figured id shed some knowledge. 2004 was the release date of the 450. From 2004-2005 it was a kickstart motor. From 2006-2014 (2014 was the last year they were manufactured) They were 450er's with electric start. For the exception of 06-09 where you could order a kicker from the factory but the only ones you ever rarely see surface are 08-09. I think in 2013 it was an option as well but again wasn't common and if there is one it is probably owned by a race team. If you ever find a 08-09 factory kicker 450r, buy it. Its rare to come by so the price is jacked up on them. Although I own an 05 which apparently is the best year of kickstart.
190 MAIN 50 PILOT is pretty big, most applications 165-180 MAIN and a 45-48 PILOT is what will work best, should run halfway okay with those jets, although.
Why did you drain the gas the hard way? And as a fellow trx450r rider that’s a pos good luck with the 3 g that your going to put in to fix it to brake it after a season
check the condition of the petcock. I bought one the same year with a similar level of neglect and the petcock had started to decompose, causing the emulsion tube to plug up as yours was. The fuel appeared to be the same vintage judging from the morning pee color. Hope it saves you some grief because it looks like a fun project
Just picked up a DVX400 in Green Bay in mint condition. I seriously messaged the guy on that 450. guy said Someone was already coming to look at it. Must’ve been you lol.
Check out TNT motos video on restoring plastics! One thing I’d suggest is try some brake fluid to peel that paint off. It’s worked for me in the past. Great video!
Try turning off the headlights when you start it because my 05 uses too much power trying to light uo the headlights so I need to turn it off to start it
Sorry to put a damper on the build but you ought to just slap a new fully assembled head on it Cause if ya shimm the valves too many times they tulip so bad and snap dropping them in the cylinder and causing a lot of damage. I got o4 crf 450 and got screwed over on it. Needed cam chain tentioner, piston, cylinder, and I put a complete head on it.(roughly a $600 head from APE)Got around 4K in it and water pump balance shaft still out of it I think, (water pump leaking). Put a new top end on it cause one he valves a Ben shimmed onece be prepared to be shimming them again sinner than latter, because with any metal once it’s bent it losses it’s structural integrity. Theses bikes do last of ya take care of them. But if ya don’t do it right the first time be prepared for motor issues frequently. Ps when the 450s back fire your valves are out of spec.
Feeler gauge is for adjusting the valves not for shoving in your cam lobes for any one watching don’t do that lol just adjust the valves to Honda spec and run Honda spec plugs and call it a day

You should do a wrap on this quad

Where are you all from?
Don’t give it gas when u go to start it Ik it habit but u will blow ur gas up and break ur leg 😂
The lever on the left handlebar is a hot start switch. More common on dirt bikes, once the bike gets hot, press that lever to help it start easier.
Ik
Bothers me when people dont power wash their bikes and take them apart.
I stg like all of that dirt goes into the motor and carb
Honestly I do the same thing, and it's mostly because you're so eager to tear into it and don't want to deal with waiting for a wet quad to dry. Water in the engine is far worse than a little dust lol.
Same
I was thinking the exact same thing
@@cryptominingbros4880 i mean idk where he lives. but here in south florida, you can wash a bike head to toe and will be bone dry in about 10min.
May I make a friendly suggestion to clean your engine before you tear into it..
My pet peeve... No love from Vintage...
Ye it's bad practice and if dirt falls in engine o damn

the amount of dirt was giving me anxiety
Me to bud
I just sold my mine for about 5
The way you said “oh yeah” when the carb screws didn’t strip is too relatable. Usually ends up in vice grips.
So true
Not if you use a tusk hand held impact that you hit with a hammer. It never strips them and even is useful to tighten them back up.
🙌 preach 😂
Just a little tip you should always clean the outside of the carburetor before you take it apart makes the job a lot cleaner and easier
That lever that you didn’t know what is is the hot start. It is on all carbuerated 4 stroke Mx bikes and quads. It is basically the opposite of the choke it gives more air rather than fuel for starting when you have been running it a lot and when it’s hot
That thing looked 100% better without those plastics on LOL I hate when people paint plastic. great video keep them coming buddy
plastics for my quad are like 1000 for a set, so i was thinking of painting mine, is there really any right way to do it?
Just make sure whatever coating you are using is for plastic that way you get better adhesion And durability
Been watching for over 2 years now and these are my fav types of vids, i love restoring dirtbikes and watching them come back to life
Clean the bikes before do something....
You really need to start washing your projects before you strip them down
Yeah I think that too !! Just dont get it ???
Atleast spray some cleaner on the cam cover before you take it off. All that shit falling into the head aint good atall.
the button is called hot start and you use it when the motor is hot
that spider at 21:08 was like "Ight imma head out"
dawg i thought it was on my screen
Idk why.. but it so satisfying watching people work on dirt bike/ quad engine

Working on sleds is pain staking
@@arcticcatkickass hell of a lot easier than that Trx if it’s got spark compression and gas it will run
Nope 👎
ITS NOT AN 03! They didn’t make them till 04
he said in the vid that it was a 04 when he looked at the vin

Quickest I’ve clicked off of insta inna while 😂
Also the little switch under the clutch perch is a hot start for when its been ran for awhile.
Always check bottom of where the oil filter goes for gold flakes. 04-05 are known for crank walk and eventually crank failure.
That little lever is a hot start it gives you more air to fuel while choke gives you more fuel to air
that lever is a hot start
You should definitely keep this quad and fix it up and make it mint

Love watching these videos , actually something to learn and worth my time to watch 💯

They only started with a neutral light on the 06 trx450er
That little lever is called a “hot start” it shoots a little bit of fuel in when you’re starting it after running.
Time to bust out the oven cleaner trick on those plastics. Good find I Ed would of bought it for 1000 bucks. Keep up the good work !
Good ol Hondas give it a valve adjustment and a good tune up and go about your day nice buy man cant wait to see the finished product
There is no neutral light on those ones and the thing on the left side of hand bars is a hot start button that lets more air in the carb
That lever on the handle bars is a hot start my 09 trx450r has one also it’s like a decompression release when it’s hot and makes it easier to start
fyi...if the exhaust gasket is gone it will backfire it may stop if you replace it
Did no one else notice a spider he was trying to fix the spark plug
yup i seen it then went right to the comments
It backfires like that because of not having an air filter..that causes it to run super lean!
that little lever that you though was a decompression release is a hot start
It kind of makes me cringe that you open the engine when it’s really dirty. Maybe power wash it first?
i was thinking the same thing.
