This episode had Angel, and that is the real reason he gave it a B+.

All this talk of goblins working for an evil magical lady has me wondering if Joss was inspired by Troll 2 🤔

Just discovered your channel and look forward to watching the past and future episode reviews. The timing of Forever helps in understanding many parts of this show and why it’s presented. The WB showed The Body , which was devastating, and then waited over a month to air Forever. Think about enduring The Body and then closure waits over 5 weeks. Having Angel, Spike, Giles sipping whiskey while listening to Cream… this was for the fans and critical to get the fans back. Try not to view Forever has an independent episode but like we attend a funeral service in life. I can tell you the month wait after last seeing Buffy and Tara in the morgue was rough.
Willow. Willow making choices that have potential negative outcomes is continuing her slow change since Becoming, Part 2. The Willlow of the first 34 episodes has been long gone and her slow change of inner self/ character has been happening since. Her actions are in line and not making the book known to Dawn would not have been Willow. Tara believes Willow simply because Tara has been programmed to trust and believe the people who love you and whom you love. A child will take a parents story and have no reason to doubt and Tara is like an innocent child.
Spike bringing flowers shows his caring for Joyce. Sending flowers to a funeral without your name is selfless and to honor the dead. A card with your name is for selfish pride and ego. Spike not having his name with the flowers, even some ratty ones, is actually a big thing and is something William would have done in 1880.
I enjoyed your thoughts, style, and humor. It was excellent. For the Buffy fans that watched when this originally aired, this was a solid A. Not for the elements of the show but for the healing that was needed. It was cruel to wait 5 or 6 weeks after The Body but it happened. Forever hit all of the needed notes and got us ready for the big push to end the Season.

There are so many scenes in this episode that made me angry, because the behavior and the dialogue were just illogical and stupid...
Willow indirectly giving Dawn the book with the instructions to bring Joyce back was irresponsable in so many ways. Dawn could do so many things wrong with that and the effects could have harmed a lot of people!
And yes, what about Joyce' boyfriend? Was he at the funeral? Did anyone care about him?
But the part where Dawn dropped the freaking egg was the scene I couldn't stand at all. Jeez!
The basic ideas were good how the different members of the scooby gang and especially Dawn would handle the death of Joyce. But the way the writers turned it was not good at all, because most of the time it was too superficial and mostly stupid. And that's a shame, because the potential was there.

Willow was being irresponsible, but that's far from being out of character for her when it comes to magic. Nobody cares about Joyce's date, not even the majority of the fans. Hence, such details are most often left off-screen. If you watch something like Mad Max: Fury Road, you'll find that not everything in a narrative needs answers. Dawn dropping the egg was just for suspense's sake. It wasn't important to the story at all.

Willow abusing magic, being irresponsible about it and lying to everyone about her more nefarious deeds and intentions is nothing new. She’s been doing it since season 2. Giles warned her not to play with magic then, as she’d open a door she won’t be able to close. This was his advice as a former magic addict.
Willow in season three and four also tries to cast spells on people without their knowledge or consent, for her own selfish need to control others, like putting a spell on Xander to make him lose his lust for her, or when she was about to hex Oz for cheating on her.
    She’s gotten worse and worse.
She’s being a progressively terrible character since season 2. She’s selfish, controlling and hides it all with her quirky/cute persona, so no-one holds her accountable. Much like when she made cookies for everyone to ease her guilt when she kept magically forcing people to do what she said in _Something blue._
Willow’s a sweet girl in the beginning that quickly evolved into a horrible, control freak that routinely abuses others and violates their consent.
