I think this perfectly gets those times when you’d become fast friends with another little kid at some event or park, then one of you leaves with your family just as quick. No contact info or parents meeting each other, just goodbye. “Probably see you later” “Yeah, probably”.

    "i'll probably see you later."
    "yeah probably."
this end dialogue here captures the beauty of fast friendships. the kind of friendship that you might get from playing at the park on a random day or sitting idle in public waiting for your parents. the feeling of wanting to see them again or play with them again, but you both know that you probably won't see each other ever. it's the unexpected type of friendship that makes it so much special.
saying "see you later" because you loved their company and something in your child heart knows that the both of you clicked together even without comprehending that in your young brain.
    i love this short film

Taika and team do it again!
Loved how the dialogue developed, and, even as a Scotsman, I absolutely adore the Maori tone of conversing, and it really takes me back to NZ any time I hear this sort of dialogue. Especially the working class Maori kids patter and expression.
Also it rings a bell within me due to being, in the 1970's, one of those kids left to wait outside pubs and ex-servicemen's clubs as my dad ignored his dad-duties and hit the pub.
Yeh, it's a form of child abuse leaving the kids out like that. But, like Taika's youth, that's just how it was for a section of us poor kids in the 70's and that truth needs represented.
    Well done Taika

The seemingly eternal waiting time as kids. As for me, I experienced this while my mom was at the union or at her second job as a private physician. There were not enough recipes to stamp nor files to help sort. The hours would go really slow and there was seldom a chance to play with other kids while being there. Thankfully, reading and drawing really helped.

He would check a couple of times and bring out bar burgers (Larry Burgers the best, no Ketchup..Cheese and Mustard on a flattop with mad seasoning) and cokes. In one of the worst part of town. Everyone knew my Dad, but no one ever called the cops...guess they liked him. This brought back mad memories. Coloring books, Comics, cards, pajamas and blankets when it was cold out...Damn.

Thank you, Taika for reminding me of a long forgotten time in my life. Money was always tight and my Grandfather (Dad's Dad) would prowl the dump for reusable or repairable items or parts for other things. Most of my bikes growing up were built from parts. ANYWAY, on the way back from the dump, Grandpa would stop at Rockers Bar. Scrap picking was thirsty work. He would sit in the bar, while I sat in his 1968 Chevy Suburban (before they were cool); sometimes for hours. I would whistle, pretend to drive, watch the clouds go by, sleep... I should have read; that's a good idea. After Grandpa had his fill, he would bring me a bag of Planter's Peanuts and tell me not to say anything to Grandma.
One time, Grandpa was so thirsty, he started the truck at the dump and started out before I was in the truck. I was hanging on to the inside door handle, while he drugged me along the ground. It was only about 10 feet, but it felt like forever. Ahhhhh, what memories.

Just seen it - I would rate it as good but not great. I think foreign films (non American basically) get automotaically rated higher simply for being "exotic". The characters are kind of annoying trailer trash/chav like and and full of bs...I suppose that IS part of the story that if you are raised in crap conditions and have a bs/fantasist father youre going to grow up a bs fantasist yourself. However it does have high nostalgia points, nice kind of slice of life type of pic, quirky and some great dialogue

I felt this short film leaked into the movie boy when his dad goes to the pub and leaves them in the car. He also sees his friend in her car like the girl in this short film. I like both variations.
Edit: I just realised that the smoking scene has some ideas used later in the movie boy when shogun shows the sparklers. Oh my god, writing this edit I just heard them mentioning crazy horses like the gang shogun is in.
