The MOST efficient artifact farm! Route A - Alternating Routes (127 artifacts, 78.1k XP)

- Want the most artifact XP you can get per patch cycle? Tired of waiting 24 hours to start your next artifact route in Genshin Impact? Would you rather start your artifact route as soon as you get off work or school, regardless of when you did it yesterday? Alternate routes are the answer:
Run Route A day 1 (75k avg xp, 78.1k this run)
Route B day 2 (72.4k avg xp, 78.1k that run)
What's that amount of artifact XP do?
A 5* artifact costs 270,475 XP to max out.
Each run gives (78,100 / 270,475) or 28.88%.
Over the course of a week, this equals two (2) completely maxed out artifacts. Sustaining this kind of artifact boost is the most significant thing you can do for your account's overall strength and long-term progression. Even at end game, you should be leveling promising artifacts to replace weak points on your existing builds and leveling up newly released sets. All players need to burn a lot of artifacts to keep up. So it's important to have flexibility in when you can perform routes.
These alternating routes can be run up to 12 hours sooner than typical artifact routes that require you to wait 24 hours, because they only share 12-hour respawns between them. The high efficiency of these shared respawns is actually the strength of running these routes, and the reason why alternating routes are the most efficient way to farm artifacts now.
Though because Route A is slightly more average XP, you should default to using Route A after 24 hours have passed for optimal XP gains per patch cycle. Route B has its own advantages though! With more overall (non-artifact) investigations and a faster run time, running Route B is very attractive for account progression.

Very good guide, going to be my go-to artifact route now. I like the breakdown of each area and the clearly marked "don't interact with this artifact spot!" to help figure out a new route quickly. It alleviates my major gripe of having to do my artifact route at the same time each day or fear of missing out. Just ran Part A and I'll be happy to run Part B tomorrow! Thanks for the hard work.

First of all, there are some small modifications for the newest routes. They don't impact overall time or XP by very much, however, so I've been been hard at work on creating a new interactive map and guide website, intended to make these kind of guides both easier for me to make and easier for you to use.
It's called Dangerpuff's Explorer Handbook and I'll be releasing it later this month. It will start out with curated artifact and elite routes based on extensive time-trial research. I'm also working on an algorithm for customized material routes, though it's hard to avoid turning that into an advanced traveling salesman problem with teleports. Hopefully it can be loaded as a user tool, if not, I'll just try to generate a selection of routes with it. If you have suggestions for routes you want to see, let me know.

Just started this route and i've found that since I started to add Dehya to my speed team for the daytime bonus, putting her skill down before I loot some of the more annoying spots really helps. Especially around 8 minutes.

Do i have to do a quest line to be able to get out of the dream world for Aranara farming?
Can I just ask for the best case scenario to maximize artifact exp?
For example, we assume 12 AM is when server resets. If I ran the A route at 11:30 PM in 15 minutes, then Route A = done by 11:45 PM and marked as such.
Then, Route B can be run by 11:45 AM (within 12 hours + daily reset happened at 12 AM)
The dilemma is, after the second route is run, the A route can only be run earliest at 12 AM again (server reset time).
So it keeps getting staggered towards reset anyhow? Worst part is, the B route cannot be run by 12:15 PM because there's no reset that happened by then, so the B route can only be run at reset again?
Please help me understand how to make it more efficient here (maybe I'm just stupid that way)

@whozgonnacare I see where you're going, but I think that's mostly the nature of the daily limit. You can only fit in so much.
To better answer the question: If you truly want to sweat out the most artifact XP, you'll always wait until the A route is available. And you'll probably modify it to include the Tatarasuna Cannons and to finish at Tatarasuna instead since you eke out a few more artifacts by finishing that way, if you're patient enough for cannons.
By waiting exactly 24 hours as often as possible, and hitting the highest XP route you can at that time, you're ensuring the most XP you can get in a cycle.
Of course this runs into staggering as well, so you can run your modified B route solely on days you can't wait for A to open up. But yeah, that's the basic strategy behind running it as an N+1 route.
