"Sammy Davis Jr. Tap Dancing - Italy 1962" - see him when he was still a young man, dancing alone surrounded by a Jazz band. Here is was older, a big movies star and all around entertainer including a comedian
Most important thing to Sammy was the audience. He was very sincere and genuine about this. To quote him, "Of course you've gotta thank the audience and show them respect, They come to see me....if they didn't I'd be out of a job!" Re your little boy....he can be a man and still be mannerly, dapper, charming and still have the "CRAIC". That's Irish for fun, enjoyment, etc. Just remind he's got class and not to lose it. To this end....you gotta check out Sammy singing "I gotta be me". Fan from Ireland.
Check out Sammy Davis Jr and Gregory Hines, beautiful but sad. Sammy was losing his battle with cancer and was invited to dance with Hines, even in his weakened state turned in a stellar performance.
Elvis loved those two kings. Sammy was said to be Elvis's shadow because they hung out together so much when in Las Vegas. They were seen at Chuck Berry's lounge show at the Hilton Hotel where they ran across the stage like kids.😂
Sammy always wore a small heel because he was so short but his last performance was in the movie "TAP" with Gregory Hines and even he wore a small heel because like many performers that time they "TAPPED" and it is easier to TAP in a heel. Even Gregory who was 6' wore a small heel. If you have not seen the movie it is the best "TAP" movie in as far back as I can remember. You will see some of the pioneers of TAP in it.
Brit, as always, you are spot on! So are your fans that comment! Several have mentioned truly great threads! These two icons were major influence on Prince, along with several others. But just think how greatness inspires even "greaterness," if that is possible. Thanks for sharing that smile!(p.s. both these men loved Elvis, so the music never ends)
Two giants of entertainment! When I was a kid, I wanted to be James Brown when I grew up. Men today need to understand - there is strength in humility. It shows confidence.
What happened is lower expectations became acceptable. I think the word you are looking for to describe these two men is refined. Sammy didn’t even learn to read and write until he was an adult. He wanted to be better than what he grew up with and he was. His manners and vocabulary were refined. I think that’s why I enjoy your reactions so much. For a young woman in today’s society, you are refined and still growing. If you don’t mind me borrowing from your departing statement, go be the person you deserve. Accept your blessings today.
Thanks for doing the James Brown and Sammy Davis reaction! I think I’ve told you before I’m a big James Brown fan. Another good reaction video of him would be the medley from the Ed Sullivan show from 1966 I think the eight minute version. But let me answer some of your questions the guy that came out in the beginning that looks like Sammy Davis that was Danny Ray he was with Mr. Brown since about 1965 until Mr. Brown passed away in 2006 he was the guy that introduced him at most of his shows and also the guy that would put the cape on him when Mr. Brown would fall down on his knees singing PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE. It’s that they a great version of that is from the Tammy show from 1964 and also a great version of NIGHT TRAIN where Mr. Brown does his greatest dancing ever captured on film. And also this particular appearance with Sammy before he dance with Sammy he did his own set of a bunch of his own songs as a medley. So that would be a good one to react to also. And the song that was playing was THERE WAS A TIME, big hit for Mr. Brown in 1968.
+I am one that got to see Sammy live and he sang Candy Man and man did he dance. And I am with you where did we make this turn where men like this made woman feel so speical.
One of My favorites of Sammy in a very informal setting! - "I've Gotta Be Me - Sammy Davis Jr." Look for this TH-cam title with "The Official Sammy Davis Jr." displayed directly under the title heading of this video! He kills it! ((:
Where did class go? It's been drowned out by the sexist, racist, thuggery of rap culture where it's the complete opposite of cool to be considered a gentleman. Sadly, if Sammy were starting out today he would have to clown up and go ghetto by becoming "Lil Fidde Sammy Ditty" or some other silly persona that would likely mask his true talent. Fortunately, Sammy Davis Jr., James Brown, The Nicholas Brothers and many, many other Black performers elevated themselves to public prominence by their sheer talent as witnessed in their awe inspiring musical and dancing performances.
If you can get your hands on it, find the clip with Sammy and Gregory Hines. It was filmed with a much older Sammy, and he was still fighting cancer, but he rose above it and dug deep to find the vigor to dance at the highest level. Sadly, we lost both of these talented men when they were far too young. As I recall, I think you said you had some exposure to Tap, so this will warm your heart.
6:31 If you wanna see James do the James Brown at his absolute best you need to watch James Brown on David Letterman in 1982. It's a 13 minute three song set but it is beyond incredible throughout.
I remember when Britt took some time off, and didn't know if she would be back...I am so glad she's back. I don't love her channel for the reactions. I love her channel, for the person she is.
My name is Stephen and one time my mom told me my dad wanted to name me Sammy, because he was such a fan, i laughed so hard because my dad was the icon of a white hillbilly mountain man, that the power of entertainment and music. Years later i checked out some Sammy David ain't no way i'm gonna live up to that lol What an entertainer, along with Frank and Dino!!
When i was very little my parents took me to see Sammy Davis in concert I went because there was a popular tv show with john travolta called welcome back kotter, the star was Gabe Kaplan who was a comedian and was the opener for Sammy Davis. Gabe was ok but Sammy was Amazing, from what I remember. He was a true talent. Interesting trivia. There was an old cop show called Baretta, Sammy Davis sung the theme song
Britt, the persona of most people today is formed in response to their interpretation of what others think of them. Vastly different from being who you are and accepting that some won't like that person.
Britt, you are absolutely 100 percent correct ! There were so many more Black men and women who carried themself with the same dignity and grace. I am a 73 year old Italian American man who watched my parents share the same obstacles your grandparents did. I was born in 1951 and was taught at home to respect and enjoy others no matter who they were. Keep telling your boy to do things the way this type of style and grace also grows your own SELF RESPECT. Peace out
Domenic Gervasio, Are you completely delusional? How do you, a white person, have the unmitigated gall, or stupidity, to claim your parents shared the same obstacles Britt's grandparents did? This is why school curriculum must be mandated by law to teach the true history of this country.
Rat Pack movie Robin And The Seven Hoods: Sammy’s solo number Bang Bang and the ensemble number Mr. Booze featuring Sammy, Frank, Dean Martin and Bing Crosby.
I was gonna say that but you beat me to it. Black culture then compared to today is like night and day. Totally different. Back then they carried themselves with pride and a swagger. Today they have zero pride and rather have victim mentality instead of positive influence.
I commend you for showing various videos,of sammy davis jr.please if you would, can you play the video of sammy singing old man river, from the hollywood palace.also you would be impressed with his rendition of,im not anyone.this was from a t.v.show that was aired.i love your comments and passion.
There's a video on youtube of Sammy doing a tap dance demonstration on the Flip Wilso show that gives a much better view of Sammy's tap skills. Sammy was also an incredible drummer and gun handler.
Britt, the first dance where he was dragging his foot was "The Mashed Potato", understand, that's the way Mr. Brown performed it, that isn't the way everybody else danced it.Britt, The Camel walk originated in the 1920s during the era of Ragtime music. Here's a link that shows Nipsey Russell doing the dances of the mid 1960s. th-cam.com/video/k5aHmZJWaiQ/w-d-xo.html
Could you listen to Buddy Rich a top drummer in the industry very close friends to Sammy Davis Jr and frank sinatra and dean martin " take the A train" duke ellingtones composition and buddys arrangement?
You can do it on the channel in parts, or watch it onn your own, and give us a review. The original Ocean's 11 has Sammy Davis Jr., Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Ceasar Romero, Angie Dickerson, and several others.
I believe the phrase that explains societal devolution is, "the soft bigotry of diminished expectations." If little is expected, little will be delivered.
There's a great video of Michael Jackson backstage with James Brown at the 2003 BET Awards where Michael goes "I may be good but he can dance in heels, I can't do that."
The greatest performance of JB was "There was a time" in the Apollo Theatre; at this time he secretly donated $ 30,000,000 for civil rights (MLK) - at time 5 students were killed at roits in OHIO by police. JB has a choreography (with all units on board - hefty fines for mistakes) and the Apollo Theatre a "Master of Ceremony" - someone who complements bad singers from the stage & celebrate the artist. Dance choreographies came from the streets and people did practice (kids in I.R.T. of N.Y.C. did dance moves in the 1980's - before going to do double dutch), after 1930-1940-Musicals (like Hellzapoppin') the SoulTrain TV-Show was for a while a thing where black kids could see and learn dance styles (that also channeled violence). BTW a guy who was seen as a Uncle Tom named Bojangles (Bill Robinson) was in some 30's musicals and danced with Judy Garland - he was an inspiration and role model for Sammy Davis, jr. Early footage of SDJ showing him flying of the flooring at the age of 12, but recently I saw a video with him as a 7 year old singer - a long time entertainer.
On my iPhone I can’t see anything because your comments were over the top of the clip. Next time take yourself off screen and let clip play. They were great performers and loved to entertain people. Thanks for sharing the clip 👍😉
Brittany. In my days I wore same heels. Dress the same way. Bogie down in those ways. Go look at Prince . Notice his outfits. There were short coats/ Jackets. Watch the old time groups. I too wonder how we got to this point. In the 30’s on up. Take a look at how Blacks dressed. Men and women. Style. Stylistic !😃🤫
Lady Britt please REACT to : MICHAEL JACKSON YOU WERE THERE ( HONORS SAMMY DAVIS JR 60TH ANNIVERSARY ) also in that same show you can see GREGORY HINES and SAMMY DAVIS JR dancing together !!! EXQUISITE PERFORMANCES BY ALL ! God Bless you always sweetie !
What happened to men?? We started to do what women asked us to do, which ended up very confusing because women are very confused. They wanted men to be more emotional but found out that most emotions are mostly quite unattractive. Men have been asked to "man up" and be a better leader, but women hate to follow, so these men are accused of being toxic, or not striving for an impossible goal, the 50/50 relationship.
Wow, this warms your heart but your comments make me sad. I fear we will never get this type of comradary between black men back. I hope I'm wrong but I think it's gone forever 😢😢😢
I dealt blackjack to James Brown for a couple of hours. He was very short. So was Sammy. So was Prince. That's why they wore heels & taller Michael Jackson didn't.

I was able to see both these men perform individually in their prime. Unforgettable!!!
Good experience 😊😊
Thank you Sir Sammy Davis Jr and Sir James Brown for your legendary GIFTS to the Planet !!! May you both rest in glorious power always !!!
I've never seen this before. Great reaction. Great suggestion. I'm gonna carry a big ol' smile on a cold, rainy day now. :)

Knowing you love dance, watch the movie "Tap" with Sammy Davis, Jr., Gregory Hines, Savion Glover and a cast of old time hoofer legends.
What happened is lower expectations became acceptable. I think the word you are looking for to describe these two men is refined. Sammy didn’t even learn to read and write until he was an adult. You should continue with more Sammy Davis's singing. His cover of I’ve Gotta Be Me is excellent.
(2:18) See the documentary "Before the Music Dies".
ICONS💯💙💯💙
Sammy Davis Jr. was tap dancing before he was 5. Try to find him as a child I believe he danced along with his uncles.
Where did class go? It's been drowned out by the sexist, racist, thuggery of rap culture where it's the complete opposite of cool to be considered a gentleman. You might want to see James Brown singing Night Train and Please please please on the Tammie Show, one hell of a performance for sure….
Back then you were proud to act with class.
Listen React to Shelter of Your Arms-I couldn't find a Live version, but it's quite an emotional song and a good one.

Rat Pack movie Robin And The Seven Hoods: Sammy’s solo number Bang Bang and the ensemble number Mr. Booze featuring Sammy, Frank, Dean Martin and Bing Crosby.
I watched the movie Tap for Sammy Davis Jr, and came away with a huge crush on Gregory Hines, may those gentlemen rest in peace,
The degradation in music and media that was what happened!!!!!
HIP HOP HAPPENED!

You Dam right!
Sammy Davis Jr was dancing with his father and his godfather on voudeville when he was a little boy
I believe the phrase that explains societal devolution is, "the soft bigotry of diminished expectations." If little is expected, little will be delivered.
They wore those heals because they were shot and wanted to appear taller. I was surprised they could dance that way in them.
Ohhhh that makes sense! And I agree with you on that!
There's a great video of Michael Jackson backstage with James Brown at the 2003 BET Awards where Michael goes "I may be good but he can dance in heels, I can't do that."
That’s a clip from Sammy’s TV show.
It's from Hollywood Palace, this was one of five episodes in which Sammy Davis hosted the show, it wasn't really _his_ show persay.

For something funny check out Weird Al's cover of James Brown, he does him perfect and is hilarious. The song is Living with a Hernia.
Honestly, James Browns dance reminded me of Snoops walk. Snoop just slowed it down and put his style on it.
You mean he reminded you of James Brown. There would be none of this music today without James Brown.
The crip-walk is what it's called, pretty similar to the Mashed Potatoes come to think of it.
No disrespect to James Brown but Sammy Davis Jr could dance rings around him.
As a fan of both this is hilariously wrong.

I’ll tell you what happened it’s liberalism .Sammy and James were real talented men, we need more like them.
For political reasons, we deconstructed adult masculinity to the point where we’ve lost touch entirely with what it is.

James Brown was literally born of his father sexually assaulting a 16 year old girl. After that he was abandoned at the age of five to grow up in a brothel raised only by his aunt.
I thought James Brown was a bigger man. He's about the same size as Sammy and Sammy miniscule.
