I think Ella is the most talented, classy singer of all time. I just love Sammy Davis Jr. So talented. There is a video of him around the age of 4 years old dancing and singing in a vaudville show his parents were a part of.
Scat Singing at its best. It's definitely freelance and on key. Did you know that Ella Fitzgerald could shatter glass with her voice? These were 2 of the all time greats and, of course, Sammy Davis is my choice for the greatest all around entertainer in my lifetime. Glad you found this gem to react to. Thank you, thank you!
Scat singing was born out of jazz and improvised as the instrumental artist did. I asked you to listen to lines for Linus Gerry mulligan and Paul desman kool jazz melodies are outstanding
This is greatness upon grestness. Ella was the Queen of Scat and had an amazingly beautiful voice. Sammy was the consumate entertainer; he did it all......sing, dance, act, played many instruments, did impersonations and was funny. "Summertime". Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong " Bang Bang". Sammy singing and dancing ( video from the movie, Robin and The 7 Hoods)
They are wonderful singers. They didn’t write songs. People today think that only singer/songwriters are legitimate. Back then a person could be a singer and that talent was enough.
Ella has many nicknames, among them are The First Lady of Song, The First Lady of Swing, The First Lady of Jazz and the Queen of Jazz. She is my very favorite musician, so much that I named my daughter after both her first and middle names. I've never heard Sammy called Mr. Entertainment. He was simply known as Mister Show Business.
So glad you found this classic, live performance. We got to see legends like this on our TV's back in the day on a regular basis. That's a live band behind them. And just listen to that audience at the end.
These two performed in my parent's time so I heard a lot of these growing up...incredible performers. Wonderful duet. This reminded me of Natalie Cole performing to a recording with her late father, the great Nat King Cole singing Unforgettable. I'd love to see you react to it.
I just loved this, and love your reaction. This performance by two of the greats leaves a person speechless. I wonder if they had any idea of their greatness.
One of the earliest performers of scat, especially on record, was Louis Armstrong, the iconic jazz trumpeter and singer. Louis would scat when he forgot the lyrics to a song in a way that mimicked the trumpet he was playing. Louis duetted with Ella Fitzgerald on many occasions. This is an endless rabbithole you'll enjoy exploring, Britt 🎺
"Music today could never" - the talent displayed here!! And your face when "scat" became the order of the day ... PRICELESS!!! Thank you again - I absolutely LOVE your reactions to an art form that in fact is lost today.
I saw Ella live in the early 1980s. She was still magnificent. Ella Fitzgerald was the "First Lady of Song" and led a big band in the 1940s. The song itself is by George and Ira Gershwin, brothers who wrote some of the greatest music between 1916 and George's death in the 1930s. Ira continued as a lyricist with other composers.
I highly recommend you check out the clip of Sammy performning "Bang Bang" from the movie Robin and the Seven Hoods. He was extraordinary! Bang! Bang! (Sammy Davis Jr.) | Robin and the 7 Hoods | Warner Archive
Her voice is magically beautiful... completely singing into our soul.. She was Mrs First Lady !!!! I love your pics , oldies are the best... Ed Sullivan 90% of time had lip singing but not with these Two Most Amazing Incredible Wonderful Voices they are LIVE !!! I found a few greats of Johnny Carson Sammy Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra on stage beforming a bit and song .... I'll send to you soon. PICKEMTRUCKBED 1970S GEARL ❤❤❤❤❤ 🎶 🎵 🎶 🎵 ❤❤❤
The Vocal Stylings of those artists will be appreciated in 1000 years. We were very spoiled then we had amazing performances on tv every night. So many Variety Shows had all the top acts ,theater ,Dance , Broadway, Jazz was very well loved and on all the time . P.s. Literature and Science was also treated with respect and the fields were seen often on tv
They are sssmarvelously intelligent and perfectly talented performers, truly legendary individuals that's for sure, loved them as soon as I heard and saw them as a kid back in the early 70s, I smile brightly 🌞
Brit- Brit- Brit! Overjoyed to watch your reaction to the greatest female vocalist of the 20th century. As she got older she refined her vocal skills. She then recorded a series of popular American standards; by the great songwriters of the Era. S'wonderful is by Gershwin. Others are Cole Porter, Irving Berlin Rogers and Hart.
I'm not old enough to remember this but i do remember Sammy Davis Jr being on the radio singing the Candyman. I love Ella Fitzgerald but learned and listened to her in my teens. Awesome
There is a great little scat duo with Ella and Mel Torme -- This is Jazz -- it's on youtube worth checking out. Mel Torme was a great scat singer as well. You should also check out Sarah Vaughan -- my favorite :)
So glad you got to this one. S'wonderful indeed. Not sure there was ever a more appropriate setting for that tune. Ella is in glorious voice & Sammy's delight at getting to share the stage with her is infectious. Mr Entertainment and The First Lady of Song. It was live TV, and while both of them would have known Gershwin's tune (the original melody & chord changes) cold, because it was a top-shelf standard, all of those embellishments you were delighting in, and certainly all of the scat lines, would have been improvised on the spot, as with any horn player working in a similar jazz setting. That's the magic.
Ella had the world’s best jazz musicians backing her...among other titles bestowed on her by fans, the musicians called her, “The Boss” while working. They knew how fantastic she was.
Ella Fitzgerald's appearance with Duke Ellington on the Ed Sullivan show on "It Don't Mean a Thing if It Ain't Got that Swing" is pretty great. Although it's hard to find a video of her singing live with Louis Armstrong, anything she ever recorded with him is one of the best things ever recorded. Her recording of "Baby, It's Cold Outside" with Louis Jordan sounds beautiful. Many of the most successful singers from the 20th century like Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby deeply respected and adored her, probably because she was the best.
As you can tell by my profile pic I am a huge Sammy Davis Jr fan. he had such a poise about him, a eloquence about himself. I watched interviews, variety shows, concerts and biography and I just miss Sammy and miss the type of celebrity that he was! ❤❤
Hey young lady, something you should do, is look up some photos of Sammy Davis Junior and Elvis, they were good friends. I don’t know if they ever performed together, but they were definitely good friends and there’s pictures of them dancing and singing together.
Ella Fitzgerald was one of those glass shattering singers who they say could shatter a glass with her voice. She did a "Is it live or is it Memorex" commercial " demonstrating that. Ella Fitzgerald, Eartha kit, Cab Callaway, Pearl bailey, Mahalia Jackson, and Ruby Dee, played in a 1958 all-star movie called "St. Louis Blues "wonderful movie, you should check it out. A lot of great singing from these classic singers.
Lady, you need to buy one of her CD's . I have her Greatest hits on two discs. I transferred it to a thumb drive, so i could listen in my ride. This lady "can really sing". Ed Sullivan was on Sunday evenings, filmed live. The singing is musical "improv".
One of Ella’s monikers was The First Lady Of Song. Britt check out Sammy doing his impressions of 50’s crooners singing One For My Baby(one more for the Road).
Just imagine being in Vegas back in the day and being able to see them. And Sinatra and Martin and all the other greats crashing each other`s shows and just making it up on the spot
Britt, this is one of the most wonderful performances I've ever seen in my life. Considering I am 82 years old, that's saying a lot. Both of these people are talented beyond any words, and yes, I definitely believe it is God given. I sincerely hope that both of them had a good life. They gave so much to this old world. Thank you so much for this upload. I didn't know this existed.
If you like scat, find Ella with Mel Tormé at the 1970s, "What Is Jazz?" Also the clip where Sammy is the host, and The Andrews Sisters and The Supremes (top girl groups of the 1940s and 1960s) sing each other's hit songs.
Scat reminds me of Al Jarreau (he was discovered in Germany and had a big fan audience there, later) with his interpretation of Take Five (originally by Dave Brubeck).
You really should check out, what was supposed to be Miss Ella passing the "greatest voice" torch down to Karen Carpenter. They sang a medley of songs, on a TV show, in the early 80s, that still makes my whole body tingle, when I watch it. Just search for them with the word 'medley'. Unfortunately, Karen passed away a short time later, and the torch was dropped 😭
"'S Wonderful" is a 1927 popular song composed by George Gershwin, with lyrics written by Ira Gershwin. It was introduced in the Broadway musical Funny Face (1927) by Adele Astaire and Allen Kearns. If you have ask who George and Ira Gershwin were, that's just real damn sad, ya know? Read up on your American heritage songbook and get with it.., the same would go for Duke Ellington, Hoagy Carmichael, Fats Waller, Harold Arlen, Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, and host of many others.
Cissy Houston died last week.she worked with Aretha and Elvis , had a long career as a gospel singer, and taught her daughter Whitney how to use her gift!
You have got to watch and listen to Sammy sing and perform choreography to "Mr. Bojangles." I think you will enjoy it. Also listen to his first and only number one song from the early '70's "Candy man."
Ella, the greatest singer! And Sammy the greatest entertainer! There was a famous ad back in the 70's with Ella scatting and then hitting a note that shatters a wine glass. Then they do the same with the tape playback and ask, "Is it live, or is it Memorex?"
Ella one of the best singers ever of any genre or time. There are hundreds of songs but a couple suggestions. If you dig the scat listen to her sing All of Me. The Lady is a Tramp is another Classic. Sammy is hands down the greatest entertainer of my life time again so many choices but I think you’d enjoy What Kind of Fool Am I or Birth of the Blues. Of course Sammy scored a Billboard number one hit in the summer of 1972 with the song Candy Man.
When vinyl records were invented making it possible to make LP records the first artist chosen to showcase the new technology, the first LP record, was Ella.
BRITT: If my recollection is correct (I'm 71 in a month), about the same time this was going on, a very young (maybe 20-year-old) George Carlin also made his first major TV debut on The Ed Sullivan Show, the TV show which this Sammy & Ella performance is an outtake from. It's fun to see you discover this, which I discovered in real-time when it happened live so very long ago. Ella & Sammy weren't just great, they were originals - innovators that countless singers were influenced by (e.g., Aretha Franklin, Jennifer Hudson, Beth Hart, & many others you don't know because of your youth...). Something they did was use their talent to serve the song instead of the opposite.
If you want a world class example of scat singing, check out the video of the group Snarky Puppy with guest vocalist Leila Hathaway. You WILL be completely blown away.
Sammy Davis Jr, even late in his career, was the most exciting male singer/dancer/impressionist/drummer in history. I saw him three times as a kid.
You are watching royalty, pure talent! Great voices, period.
I think Ella is the most talented, classy singer of all time. I just love Sammy Davis Jr. So talented. There is a video of him around the age of 4 years old dancing and singing in a vaudville show his parents were a part of.

I've been lucky enough to have had their music in my life for three quarters of a century. These 2 are the GOATS of Goats.
They were just having so much fun and playing with each other. Freaking awesome!

Two American ICONS! Back then you had to have talent to be known on a broad scale.
I remember watching this when it first aired. It like everything these two legends did...

Sammy called her First Lady because Ella was known as "The First Lady of Song" and "The Queen of Jazz".
ED Sullivan did not allow lip synching on his show. I read somewhere he allowed an exception or two, but not often.
