Great reaction and a fact I watched him in an Interview and he said Elvis added, "And His Mama Cried", and said he knew what the song needed, God Bless!
Mac Davis was an extremely kind man. He was friends with my Dad, and he would visit us when he came to Wichita. He was very handsome and had a huge, funny personality. He was also one of the absolutely best songwriters ever. He wrote sad, romantic, love, funny, and any other type of song. You would love his version of “Daddy, Please Don’t Cry”. But, bring your tissues. Then, listen to his song “It’s Hard to be Humble”. THEN, listen to him sing “Memories” at Elvis’ memorial. Mac’s son is named Scott. Mac wrote “Watching Scotty Grow”. Dad loved it so much he name my brother Scott. Two wonderful songs that are PDC worthy is “Friend, Lover, Woman, Wife” and “Hell of a Woman”. He said he just wrote about life and hoped it rhymed.
@@DavidHinson-t5l Mac took a softer approach, he's not a power singer, never claimed he was. Elvis didn't write the song, so why are we comparing apples to oranges here? Music not a sport contest like so many think it is.
Elvis's version has his Backup Choir girls adding alot of Soulful Color to the Song. Elvis did to this Song what Whitney Houston did to Dolly Parton's "I will always love you"... They didn't just cover the Song, they made it their own.
Elvis also wanted “I Will Always Love You”, but Dolly was smart enough not to give in to The Cornels demands that Elvis would get the publishing if he recorded it. A huge testament to how smart Dolly Parton is.
I AM STUNNED! TRULY SURPRISED YOU HAVEN'T REACTED TO ELVIS EMOTIONAL VERSION. I mean I THOUGHT you did!! CHECK IT OUT in Thats The Way It Is ...Elvis wear white jumpsuit & red trim and sash
Mac Davis offered this song to Sammy Davis Jr. who turned it down saying, "In all authenticity, I can’t do this song because I never lived this way, but I will tell you who did: Elvis Presley."
If this is your first introduction to Mac Davis, you are in for a treat. Mac wrote and sang many wonderful songs. Try listening to Stop and Smell the Roses and Baby, Don't Get Hooked on Me.
Britt if you haven't listened to Elvis's version of the Ghetto it is really good. I really enjoy your feedback and great comments on your channel. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. 👍👍
Beautiful and tragic song. One of Elvis's best. You should check it out on your channel. You should also check the version Dolly Parton did as a tribute to Elvis.
I love this breakdown. I teach 8th grade English/Lang Arts at an urban school and we read this song as a “poem” each year. I have the students write their reactions as they read. We then discuss and share our thoughts as many of my students have lived this life. I may have to use your reaction in the future.
Davis wrote it, Presley made it legendary. Even after giving Presley an unearned co-writer's credit (and the resulting royalties), Davis was able to buy the top two items on his wish list with his FIRST royalty check. "In the Ghetto" made Davis a successful professional musician/songwriter.
He's done quite a few more uplifting songs as well... like "Stop and Smell the roses", "Don't get hooked on me" And Comedic Songs like "It's hard to be Humble" and "Falling in love with your Wife". He had a Variety show back in the 70's, and he would ask Audience members to shout out a Topic, then would make a Humorous song up on the Spot (Like the "Who's Line" does in the Hoe-downs"). Mac Sadly passed away in 2020, at the Age of 78... Complications during Heart Surgery. RIP
"Whoever Find This I Love You." "I Believe in Music." He was as good a sngwtier as Jim Croce, James Taylor and all the rest. But it's not a contest. It's an art.
this was written during a time “the ghetto” was not the same reference it is today. there was no slander on poor people. it’s just a true gut statement during the time it was written. but notice there is not much difference in todays times. just the reference has harder implications
He wrote this 55 years ago, still so sad but so true. TIMELESS ! Mac wrote many songs that hit for other artists. Listen to "Watching Scotty Grow" for a more optimistic lift from Mav Davis.
Huge credit to Mac Davis for this. It’s a great song, & Mac is a hell of a song writer & a super star in his own right, but the honest truth is Elvis took this to another level. Listen to Elvis do this song. If it doesn’t bring tears to your eyes, it’s because you weren’t paying attention. And watch the live version.
Elvis' version is much more emotional...his voice, his intonation was just so good. Mac wrote it, sang it, but not nearly as good as Elvis did. Yes, Elvis would make you cry...
God is so good to me!! After so much struggles i now own a new house with an influx of $115, 000 every month God has kept to his words, my family is happy again everything is finally falling into place. God bless America. 🙌🏻
Unfortunately, not all of us were financially literate early. I was 35 when I finally educated myself and started taking steps. I went from $176,000 in debt with zero saving or retirement to now, 2 years later, fully debt-free and over $1000,000 net worth. I know that doesn't SOUND like a lot, but I'm incredibly proud of it. Now I'm fast-tracking my wealth building (investing $400,000 annually) and don't owe a dime to anyone. It's a good good feeling!
Same here, I believe the Bitcoin ETFs approval will be life changing opportunity for us, with my current portfolio of $108,000 form my investment with my personal financial advisor totally agree with you
I agree with you regarding the original title. The Vicious Cycle is more inclusive, such as those living in rural areas of deep poverty. While I appreciate Elvis' version, I think I prefer hearing Mac Davis singing his own work.
The big problem with the title "The Vicious Cycle" is that those words never appear in the song. Songs are typically titled by a "hook" phrase that repeats throughout the song like the phrase "in the ghetto" does. In terms of the psychology of marketing a song (or "branding" a song, if you will) using the "hook" to title the song is a much better choice. Mac Davis, being a top-tier songwriter clearly would have known that. So I'm suspecting there's probably something more to the story of the title change.
To cure the hiccups tell yourself “I am not a fish.” Apparently hiccups are due to some vestige of our evolution. Either that or it’s such a weird thing to say that it tricks the mind in some way. Either way it works 100% of the time for me. On occasion I have to say it twice, but that’s it. Give it try.
Oh honey, you need to hear Elvis sing that song! He grew up in the ghetto and lived that life. I grew up in government housing projects after my father was thrown in prison for bank robbery and murder. He spent the rest of his life in prison,33 years. My mom broke that cycle and became the first woman deputy sheriff hired in our county in the 1970’s. Unfortunately she couldn’t break the cycle of abusive men and she was murdered at the age of 52 by her husband of 18 months. His prison sentence was 19 years and he got out in a little over 14 years.
Most people are much more familiar with Elvis's version (which is great) - it's good to see someone react to Mac performing it. For a totally different side of Mac, check out "Hard to be Humble."
Davis was a successful songwriter at first and then had a big run of hits in the '70s as a singer/entertainer. He also had success as an actor. Elvis recorded several of his songs including the classic "In the Ghetto," the melancholy "Don't Cry Daddy," and the lively "A Little Less Conversation."
I prefer the Elvis version, however it makes my cry every time. Beautiful and heart wrenching at the same time. Unfortunately, this is still true today.
I always liked Mac Davis's version a little better than Elvis's. Also, if you're a bit charmed by Mr. Davis, you should definitely check out the movie "North Dallas Forty", where he REALLY shines!
This song represents this fallen World, and why Jesus was born in this world to pay the price of Sin. To Give Hope, redemption, and Every Lasting LIfe. Merry Christmas
Mac Davis was a super-talented singer and songwriter who had his own must-watch TV variety show in the mid-70s when there were very few network stations available, meaning you had to be terrifically personable and talented to get your very own primetime spot. One of his superpowers was the ability to write a song on the spot, based on something shouted out by members of the audience. His song "Hard To Be Humble" was funny and a big hit. I'd also recommend "Lubbock Texas in My Rearview Mirror," an autobiographical song about his eagerness to get away from Lubbock and his subsequent eagerness to get back home. As he requested, when he died he was buried in Lubbock -- in his jeans.

Actually he recorded seven songs Mac Davis wrote. The four that did best in the charts were "In the Ghetto", "Memories", "Don't Cry Daddy", and "A Little Less Conversation". His early records did use a lot of echo. At Sun Records the echo was made by passing the tape through two recording heads when recording, a technique called slap-back echo, pioneered by Sam Phillips. At RCA, they wanted the same sound for Elvis, but Phillips wouldn't tell him how he did it, so they did use echo chambers. By today's standards the echo was very prominent, but after a few years it became more subtle as it was produced electronically and reverb was preferred. Nothing wrong with echo or reverb in itself, it doesn't make a bad singer sound better, it just makes the audio environment sound more like a theater or concert hall. But it was often used in excess in the early days of rock. You grew up in a good time for music, as I did (I'm about ten years older). I first saw Elvis on the Milton Berle show, months before I saw his first performance on Ed Sullivan. I've been a hug fan ever since!

What really is sad, is that this song was released in 1969, and some 55 years later this cycle still continues. what really has changed?
Britt, great reaction. You should check out Elvis and Lisa Marie singing "In the Ghetto". Also watch the video to it. It's very moving.
