  • Don't wanna give up on life's little luxuries when you're off camping, and you wanna be able to run your 240 Volt appliances?
    We're gonna try and answer the question… What size inverter do I need?
    PLEASE NOTE: We can not advise what size inverter you need without knowing the complete specifications of the vehicle, power system and application in which it will be used. If you would like to know what will suit your specific situation, please contact our office directly.
    The size of inverter you need depends on two things, what you wanna run, and how much battery you've got to run it.
    Here we've got two inverters, fairly common ones in the market. 350 Watt, small inverter, and a semi-big one, a 2,000 Watt inverter.
    If you want us to help you answer the question (What Size Inverter Do I Need?) we need to know what you wanna run, how long you wanna run it for, and actually what time of day you wanna run it. Once you can help us with these answers, we can advise you on what size battery bank and inverter you need.
    If you have these or any other questions, please feel free to give us a call on 1300 227 353 or send us an email at info@amae.net.au.

    In Australia you have to install the inverter upside down.

      @@infiniteburrows990 Good point. I hadn't thought about that. Since Oz is on the underside of the pancake, I suppose you'd need Velcro. Or forget the inverter altogether. Just drill a yuge hole in the center of Kansas and drop 'em a power cord. You'd have to use a negative 60hz cycle because of the screwy Vortillian Effect. Once you cross the Equator, your watch runs backwards. It's true. You can look it up.

      @@mattperreault3518 This is true...in fact, it seems to me you can place the "un" prefix in front of any word and have it accurately describe Australia.

    Thanks for this - it's useful. How do you size an inverter in a 12v system for an e-bike charger? I'm confused whether to base it on the input (200-240v, 1.2a) or output (41.8v, 4a)

    • @accelerateoffgridtouring
      @accelerateoffgridtouring  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Andrew, thanks for your enquiry! Sizing the correct inverter depends on the total wattage the appliance will draw. I.e if your E-bikes require 600w of power to charge, we would recommend a minimum of a 700w inverter. The wattage should be stated on the appliances spec data to size it accordingly. From there you will need to tailor a correctly sized DC battery system to have the correct capacity to carry out a full charge!

    Great informative video, however I just want to clarify one thing. My vehicle only has a single 40ah battery so even powering a 400w inverter would not be possible?

    • @accelerateoffgridtouring
      @accelerateoffgridtouring  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Thanks for your comment!
      Depending on the type of battery you are using. If it is a lithium Battery you would need to check the maximum discharge rate that battery can handle.
      As for the 400w inverter, This will draw roughly 30amps. of a 40ah Battery you will get a very minimal run time without any charge input.

    Is there a paracitic draw increase in bigger inverters (besides the cooling fan). I have a Playstation and monitor in my van. 400watts on a 500. Fan is always on. Would a bigger inverter stay cooler and more efficient (less fan)?
    Is there a demand ratio for less heat/stress?

      @accelerateoffgridtouring  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for your comment!
      Yes, with larger inverters they generally do have a a larger parasitic draw. However, You are correct in saying that a larger inverter would stay cooler due to not requiring to work as hard to produce a smaller load.

    I want to run my 1/3 hp sump pump. It needs 2000 W starting and around 800 running Watt. I think I need around 2000-3000W inverter. My question is can I plug those into a regular size car battery and keep the car running? My intention is to use it during power failure once a year for 2-3 hours.

    • @accelerateoffgridtouring
      @accelerateoffgridtouring  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi there!
      It depends on the size of the car battery and the alternator as it will need to be able to produce the amperage required to run it continuously.
      Car batteries are not designed to have high amperage loads on them for a period of time, They are designed to provide high amperage for the initial starting of the vehicle then the alternator carries most the electrical load.
      We would recommend a generator for your purposes.

    I have a question what is an inverter most commonly used for? Because I seen images of inverters coincide with cars and what you just explained kinda clears it up a little. So if I want to use let’s say a gaming console that was from another country and the voltage 100v for Japan, 110/120 for USA. is different then i would have to use a converter and not an inverter and if so what brands are trustworthy to use? Because im getting a little confused on what I need to do this job. Please help.

      Thanks for your comment!
      Inverters are used to generate 240v AC power from a 12v DC power source in the automotive application.
      We would be unable to advise what the best product would be to run your gaming application as the specifications vary from applications. Some devices have a built in transformer or converter to achieve the desired run voltage.

      Solar at home should use a clean sheet design. The 3 most common mistakes are 1. Batteries in parallel ( bad ). 2. Unnessessarily using 120 or 220 volts for all devices, when many lights and appliances can be purchased in 12 volts. 3. Chasing false goals suggested by the installing contractor.

      It depends on the application, separate charge units are beneficial for lithium systems as you can have multiple sources of charging input at one time. I want to purchase an Australian made inverter product, but the Redarc units seem so much more expensive. Does anyone know why this is the case? I understand extra labour costs but even so, do these have additional features that make it worth the costs? the Redarc 2000W is around $2k AUD. where as other (presumably lower quality) units from other companies are between $600-1000. Does anyone have any info/perspective on this. I'm torn!

      Hi there, a lot of it comes down to personal preference, but we are very selective with the brands we use and recommend and will only suggest solutions that we have tried and tested ourselves.
      When deciding what brand to use it is important to take into consideration the history of the brand, product quality, manufacturing standards and any warranties or guarantees provided by the company.
      If you do have any further questions, please feel free to give us a call on 1300 227 353.

    Hi
    How to set up a mobile tire change van with 1500w inverter powering 1500 w air compressor + 1050w tire changing machine ?
    24 gallons air compressor gets full in aroud 4 minutes which is enough to fill 1-2 tires , meaning air compressor will have to be filled 2 -4 times per car . Tire changing machine will probably work for 8 minutes per car.
    120 ah battery should fill air compressor and still have about 75 ah left after it.
    Once 1 car is done this way then van will idle for 10 minute while packing tools and then travel to next car for about 20 minutes + can idle for another 10 minute while getting tools out for the next car.
    Wonder how fast can van's alternatot recharge battery while idling and driving for this kind of time intervals.
    Ford transit 2004 , 2.0 tdci, fifa, 92 kw
    i think it has 105 a alternator .
    Where to look for larger alternator if it can be installed ? Thicker cables as well ?
    Thanks !

    • @accelerateoffgridtouring

      It should run anything under 1000W fine.... It's the run time that will be affected. A single 100W solar panel will struggle to keep up with a fridge and an inverter if they are running all the time. We would recommend a larger solar system to cater for the loads present.

      Your inverter sizing really depends on the AC chargers specifications & power usage.

      You will have a significant power loss going from 12vDC to 240vAC to 12vDC once more.

      Just look at the watts the angle grinder is drawing (Say 250 watts) then you will need at least a 300 watt inverter with a 600 spike (Start up). But to be safe go with one a little stronger like 400 and you won't be straining the inverter.

      Let's discuss a 600w inverter vs a 3000w. Turned on but with no appliances running a decent brand 3000w inverter would draw about 6amps. A 600w would be around the 1-3amps. So yes there is a difference in there stand by currents. - The Team at Accelerate Auto Electrics

The reason I am building such a large unit is because approx 90 to 95% of the time, I will not have any access at all to any kind of shore power hookup, and if my onboard generator decides to stop working, I want a set up big enough to be able to power the entire motorhome all at once. Hi Ed, there are a lot of factors to consider when planning out your power system including the existing power system, space available, appliances you want to run and your budget. If you would like to discuss the specifics of your system, feel free to call us on 1300 227 353 or email info@amae.net.au.

    I just bought a 1500 watt inverter. Would that work for my tv and play station and fridge. I drive 18 wheelers

      hi chris, Thanks for your comment!
      It depends on the individual item's wattage rating & if you are using them all at the same time you want to ensure that the 3 devices do not exceed your rated wattage in total. Generally speaking, a 1500w will cover these appliances but you will require a battery bank of a minimum of 200ah of ideal lithium to get a decent run time.
