By the way, let's not compare the two masters. They differ too much and they both have their own qualities and marvellous sound! Don't forget that there was also a man at the piano...
Without doubt! I feel very privileged to have seen both Pastorius and Pederson in my lifetime oddly they both sounded so electric an acoustic at the same time. Pederson could sound like Hendrix at times.
WAS there ever a better bassist than Pedersen?! It's my instrument, and I would give my entire set of teeth to play "with eyes closed" as well as that guy. May he rest in eternal peace. The man was simply incredible. Sorely missed. What a talent.
Yes, Ray was "better", if we need to use your qualification. Ray was the root of everyting Nils' talented ass tried to play (but couldn't, if you are a discerning jazz bass listener). Not to say Nils couldn't rock. Listen to him with Sonny Rollins and you will know he can go, but under this contrived competition with Ray, he does not deliver the soul. He shows that he is copying and working on Ray's basis. No pun intended.
Wow, you´re a joykill if ever there was one, and a pretentious one at that. I know this because I´ve read your comments, and I´m a very discerning reader.
Both are amazing bass players, and completely different. It's pretty obvious NHOP has higher technical skills of the instrument, but Ray swings badass like no other. Also their solo vocab is completely different. My favorite bass players have always been Ray Brown, Pettiford, Slam Stewart and Jimmy Blanton! Just my opinion :)
No one here asked for yours as well so... and... in my opinion (i really dont care if you asked for it or not), you have no idea about technique in any instrument whatsoever.
Other than the fact that we were just serenaded by two of the greatest bassist in Jazz, The song is quite beautiful to boot. Happy Birthday and R.I.P. NHOP
If you listened to Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen back in 1973 as I was lucky to do, you would have become a big fan of this gay for years to come. He must have been one of the best jazz bass players ever. I still believe this to day.
Why are any of you wasting your time trying to compare these guys or make a case for who is the superior bassist? Ray Brown, NHOP and Ron Carter are all masters in their own right, and command the respect of bassists and musicians around the world. Enjoy the fact that people as good as them exist on this planet.
Since the beginning of his history, comparison is in the spirit of jazz, in the playing of musicians, in the public reactions. Ray Brown has a "walking style" giving a strong swing mood, in line of Jimmy Blanton. NHOP is a member of bassists new generation who offer in extra of rythmic a melodic line (Eddie Gomez, Miroslav Vitous?...)
I played this for my great niece. She's not yet a teen. She was blown away, and usually listens to K-pop. I like K-pop, too. But with K-pop, I can only handle in small rich-food dessert servings, while these guys can play for days and I'd still feast my ears!
I could not contain my emotions when I listened to this. It brings me to tears of absolute joy. We are absolutely blessed to have experienced the magic and beauty of these wonderful talented people. Words fail me.
NHOP gave his usual best. This is the defining moment of a new generation of bass players coming aboard. Listen to the "snap" that Niels generates. No drummer needed. He played into Oscar's solo with deepening harmonics. What swinging! In later years, he stayed with Oscar even though Mr. Peterson couldn't use his left hand due to his stroke. What class NHOP and Martin Drew showed in continuing to perform and tour with Oscar.
ray is the mentor of many bassist in the world but Niels bass playing was awesome playing along with the one and only Oscar Peterson that was something which I think no one could have ever achieved in this world or the next world to come by just being a bad critic.
Comparing such artists is in my opinion an exercise in futility. Variety is the spice of life. Can anyone imagine the world with only one bass player? The aggregate contributions of all artists throughout history worldwide is the foundation of any aspiring artist. Also there’s the question of taste. When I was 15 NHOP changed my world, and now that I’m 60 my heart still rejoices whenever I hear his playing. 😊❤️🙏
I had the GREAT PRIVILAGE of seeing Nils, Martin and Oscar at the Crucible theatre in Sheffield a gig I spent my last £15 on and one that will stay with me for the rest of my life... RIP... we miss you all :0)
incredible... i was dreaming from that situation between Ray Brown and Niels Henning ,but i didnt knew that it actually happened! of course there are some guys they begin to compare them both..how stupid!! Most of us will never even come near that level were this gentlemen was! Respect them and celebrate the music they made together!!!!! Jazz!!!
Yes, Alexander! Yes! They are both HERE doing their thing, and no need to compare. Excellent vibe from you! Glad it happened that some can see BOTH jazz-loving bassist genius in one video!
FattyRollsAgainOSU Just admit that you are so worried about it that this hypocrite has your head all tied up. Go get your own. I don't need you to dig me.
Hi Brynjar Hoff, I currently study with Max Artved at DKDM. Your interesting oboe playing and intense sound has been a great inspiration to me over the years!
Very good comparison that I agree with totally. Oscar Peterson said on many occasions that NHOP was the fastest thinking bassplayer he had ever played with. He does have tradition as well (played at Montmatre in Copenhagen since he was 14 or 15 with all the greats) but what makes him special is the way he 'thinks' music. Listen to his 'Samba petit' for example!
I came here from the 1992 Danish NHØP documentary, which features a great Samba Petit around 51 minutes and begins and closes with another great "OK, Jaco you're great, but check this out" solo bass.
Brakedd, the song is called "You look good to me" And Oscar certainly redorded it a few times. I have played this one myself with Wray Downes, an excellent Canadian pianist, disciple of O.P.
Wow...this whole performance is fantastic and that ending melody is absolutely just the perfect cherry on top...incredible. I could listen to this all day - as I have been, much over the past few days!
these three great musicians have something for all of us the learn from and to enjoy. it's fantastic........! just from this video i have learned much about playing jazz, as a bass player in a duo setting.... and yes.......extremely enjoyable just to listen to....
Thank god, there is still someone who thinks the same way as me! I have the greatest respect for them both and I wish I could've seen them both live. That must have been so awesome!
I've been listening to the multiple times over years. I noticed something interesting about NHØP with OP over RB with OP: NHØP had learned OP better. Both RB and NHØP were beasts but NHØP seemed to bring out the feel and progression of OP that he was looking for. If you listen when NHØP came in, it was this mellow sound where OP gradually increased the emotion of the song.
@KennewickMan..Pedersen is a Very melodic Bass player, when I 1st saw him play (with Oscar peterson in the early 70's), That was what I noticed about his playing - along with his fluidity/speed/invention. As an electric bassist who went on to Upright, I can tell you that his bass sounds Nothing like an electric. As far as the action on his bass - Ray can have his action as low or high as he wants. These guys don't play on old wooden boxes. They use the Best.
I usually hate bass solos because bassists rarely have any sense of melody at all, or they just like to show off....so what a treat this video is to have two of the major exceptions playing together.
You see, this comment thread is exactly why youtube comments sections suck. The uninformed, completely unqualified judgments of people comparing these two bass players and declaring a "winner", are desperately sad. They are completely different kinds of players.
Oscar was so good, he needed the two best upright bassists in the world to keep up with him.
@Andybaldman..and the best bass player was Ray Brown....Period...Not forgetting Ed Thigpen on drums.
By the way, let's not compare the two masters. They differ too much and they both have their own qualities and marvellous sound! Don't forget that there was also a man at the piano...
Only the greatest pianists deserve such ultra quality bassists.

I have played this song on repeat several times!!
I literally LOL'd when Peterson wiped his face with left hand while shredding with his right. Too smooth.
