@@Ghost-ir7yl Suzuki is literally Marner if he played center and he makes 3 million less… Caufield has potential to be as good as Nylander too, don’t forget this year was Willy’s breakout year that just so happened to be a contract year so if Caufield is a point per game player it’s a valid argument for them being equals and the only two that don’t have the same potential is Matthews and Slaf but with how much the Habs saved on all three they could afford someone like Tavares 2.0 🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️. 2 points justifying the 7.6M for 8 years deal : 1- taxes in canada are 50% for people making over 100k. equivalent for a florida player deal would be like 5M 2- playing more for UFA years is the norm. you don't want your young talent going to the market and lose them for nothing.
Am I missing something ? $7.6 million for a 20 yr old who has averaged .50 points per game in his first two seasons. Why not a 3 year bridge deal and see if he’s where it ?
i think players want to avoid the "bridge" contract and make $$$ fast... also, teams see it as a good deal because in 4-5-6 years its gonna be really cheap for a 1st liners.
Cost certainty. As people have pointed out, if you do the bridge, sure, it's easy to walk away or "save yourself some money" if the player busts out, but if he DOESN'T bust out, if he DOES become the power forward with skill that you drafted him to become, then at the MOMENT that he can sign an extension, you're gonna be paying 9.5, 10, 11 million for an 8-year term. Instead, just pay him a little more now than he might be worth based on what he's done and bet on what he's GOING to do. Because best case scenario happening, this number is goddamn highway robbery in 3 years, and you'll still have 5-6 more to go. Plus, to look at it another way: let's assume that as the young stars continue to develop, Montreal takes that step back into perennial contention for the Cup - and if you're trying to, say, buy at the deadline, buy on July 1st as a legit contender, make a trade for a needle-mover, you want as much cap flexibility as possible, which is what this allows for. You know what you're spending long-term at the top of your lineup; all three star forwards are signed long-term (6, 7, and 9 more years), for less than $24 million total against the cap. It's a thing of beauty.

suzuki, caufield and slaf all under 8m, still for 6-9 years... Crazy.

Golden contract for the Habs.
Imagine if Matthews or Marner had slaf's agent?!? We should draft high end talent based on their agents.
Lmao, you mean "Imagine if matthews or marner had Slaf's character?!?" Fixed that for ya
That was some slick editing, they just completely removed Steve saying Wayne Gretzky in the middle of Jesse talking and it still sounds clean.

Bit early to tell. Kinda like the Jake Sanderson deal.
Sanderson is a stud and will be worth every penny, just like Stutzle and Tkachuk. Habs fans should be delighted with this deal

Why can the leafs never get a home count discount? Instead we gave Nylander at least 2m more than he could have got on the open market

Gamble for sure, but if you watch him play you will understand. So young, constantly improving, amazing attitude and a beast competitor.
