In that hat myth, velocity is the enemy. You want the largest, slowest round available as that is most likely to impart enough energy to make the hat fly instead of just flop.
@shinigamimiroku3723 I'd start that line of tests with airguns. The Giardini air rifle dates to the late 18th century and launches a reasonably sized ball with a decent bit of oomph, enough to kill a man at 50 yards. Then I'd test something like a modern .22 PCP air rifle in the 12ft/lb to 15ft/lb range with modern 20+ grain slugs. See if slower rounds really do offer more knock-off performance or is my hypothesis flawed. Definitely would bust out a .75 cal musket and finish off with a 64lber cannon.
As a player of red dead online, I can confirm that it is indeed possible to shoot a man's hat off his head without injury to the man. I can confirm that it's easy to do so the first time and a good chance to do it twice and then get away in Rhodes. But is dang near impossible doing it twice in Tumbleweed. I can also confirm (so far) that it is impossible to shoot the hat off a lady without injury the lady.
Yes, they maybe should have gone a little further. For example in "For a few dollars more" Manco goes to free that Sancho Perez dude from jail and Sancho uses his mattress to shield himself from the blast. I would be curious if this would have worked, even though I doubt it. Busted eardrums may be the least of his worries. Also from the same movie comes a scene where Clint shoots at Lee Van Cleef's hat until it is out of his range and he is out of ammo. Then it is Lee's turn and since he has the benefit of a longer barrel he empties the cilinder without letting Clint's hat hit the ground. Probably not possible, butit would have been cool to include the scene as a reference. Still, just minor nitpicks, a very enjoyable episode. Thanks a ton.
It varies by State. Every US state is like a separate country, with their own executive, legislative, and judiciary branches, and their own laws. Federal law only can address certain things, whereas State law typically supersedes. There are a few laws on the Federal level that deal with the import and export of human bones, but those primarily deal with grave robbing. I would say that most states have rules on import / export / purchase of real human bones. I guess California does not or that the bones in this episode are only said to be real, but are in fact replicas
Actually, medical and scientific boones are surprisingly easy to obtain. My friend got several human bones for demonstration project with almost no questions asked from the seller. He said the only issue he ran into was the TSA when flying home, who questioned what was in his carry-on.
Yup, it's pretty fucked up, since most of the bodies got donated under the assumption that they'd be used for science. John Oliver has a whole episode on it
The breaking out of prison myth would apply to older jail cell used in local county rather than a secured jail cell. The jail model they referenced to is much more advance than the usuall local jail cell shown in movies
But that doesn't really matter since he died from the blast right? If he survived the blast he would've been able to escape so it would've been confirmed anyway.
The logical way to finish testing the jailbreak myth would have been with a couple of draft horses. I've seen a team move upwards of ten thousand pounds- considerably more than the 'mechanical horse' here.
for some reason people who leave college with multiple degrees aren't smart enough to think of the simplest things, just like it happened in the Kill Bill Coffin escape episode where they didn't think that after the first hit the wood would be weaker.
Should have had buster laying down and maybe on the other side... I'd want to be as far from the explosion not on the same wall and sat upright... You'd be curled in a ball in the far corner most likely... One of the problems I've had with the show over the years was it's choice of circumstances kind of baffled me sometimes.. like in this case.
@Mythbusters, Thank you very very much for uploading this video, i am so glad i can watch my favourite show. I cannot find the boxset in any store, and i do not trust internet sellers! Again, THANK YOU SO MUCH!
You made that wall out of wood there was no way that these steel bars were gonna yank. In westerns the idea was that it was a brick or stone wall around the window giving up.
I haven't seen much westerns, mostly Leone's, plus a few classic, iconic ones, and a few of the modern ones. But I remember the scene from "For a few dollars more" and it was like you say - a mortar wall , or brick or something. Not wood.
The thing is...some cars DO have their side airbags in the door, I believe the 1997 BMW 5 series is one example of many. When side/head airbags first came into being they didn't deploy as quickly and so a fair proportion were mounted in the doors. It was only in the early 2000's when technology advanced that they moved the thorax airbag to the seat and head airbag to the roof on most models. Those door mounted airbags...I'm sure they could accidentally be deployed by an errant lockpicking tool.
29:41 dear mythbusters, dear community, i watched this Episode many times and it seems to me (correct me if i'm wrong) that you shoud have tried it not with all four barrs but work with only one when i was in school because of the side pressure and more. Sorry about my english .😅
I've seen westerns were they used a team of horses to pull the window bars out. Having a horse back up is not the proper way to apply any real power from the horse. Using a harness team is the right way to maximize the force. After all that's why it's done that way for pulling heavy wagons.
23:30: so Arthur Morgan freeing that rat Micah Bell in Strawberry in Red Dead Redemption 2 with that steam powered crane like machine was possible? Yes its a videogame but still.
I hope someone other than Discovery gives them their show back.. with FULL creative control, and a bottomless budget. It was lightening in a bottle, and Discovery doesn't deserve to profit from the reboot.. Without haven known him I'm certain Grant would love for the show to get new life.
Could it be that the western guys was wearing something rigid in their hats? To make them more robust or more steady when riding horse for example. Or may be it was common to use a hat as a pocket for some things.
Yeah... if someone is trying to break into a car, and something hits the car hard enough to set off the side airbag, where the slim jim is going will be the least of that person's problems.
in Reacher, he kicks the front bumper of a car so hard the airbag deploys on the driver. the "expert" is saying its not humanly possible. i guess Reacher isnt human

There are many vehicles with side impact airbags stored in the door, but they are typically older. The trend has changed to put them in the seat in the last decade or so, as you mentioned.
