    The first disk with this was Lazaretto by Jack White. He saw holographs like these etched into metal disks at an art exhibit, so he contacted the artist and had him etch the grooves on a copy of metal master disk and it luckily worked when the records were pressed.

      Is it floating above the record like this one? I haven't heard of any like that before, just like the holograms in the movies, just in thin air. Not inside plastic boxes. Funny how it's art that is making holograms more advanced, not science. Well it is science, I suppose.

    Best lighting is a single-LED flashlight, a very small tracklight spot, or a white LED on a camera, held above and pointing down. To see a non-blurred hologram, use a painfully bright "point-source," not a wide frosted bulb.
    Making your own DIY vinyl holograms, see the YT playlist: goo.gl/0Vq84F
    Use two separate LED lights, makes two holographic images. Some technospeak: the deep 3D image is the "orthoscopic" image, while the flying, inside-out copy is the "pseudoscopic" image. Move your LED light source around and you can swap their positions.
    Currently, other holo-vinyl albums are: Rush re-issue of "2112," also "Lazeretto" by Jack White.

      If it's one of your lasers? Fire.

    • @wbeaty
      @wbeaty 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      A lens-spread laser will make the image become perfectly sharp! These things are actually the same as Benton White-light credit-card holograms, but having hand-scratched diffraction fringes. Benton holograms are frequency-independent, and I realized that their diffraction patterns are size-independent. The fringes can have any spacing, yet the hologram still works. Try drawing the Benton holographic "zoneplate pattern" by hand with a needle? Yep, you've now made an actual hologram! See "Not true holograms?" link at amasci.com/amateur/holo1.html
      Back in the mid-1990s when I invented this, I was telling everybody that it wasn't like CDROM holo-rainbow diffraction, instead it was "vinyl record diffraction!" That gave me one key to producing good ones: the lines must be like grooves from a Recording Lathe with no signal. A wiggling needle will destroy the image. Also it was obvious that we could use record-pressing machines to mass produce the Abrasion Holograms. It's as if we were poised in 1994 to have a whole Scratch-Holograms industry. But it didn't happen. It had to wait for someone to invent the full-circles version, wide-angle viewable from 360deg.
      Then someone on TH-cam discovered that, if we rotate the circular type, then the 3D image rotates too. Jack White put a rotating angel on a novelty vinyl pressing. Then Rush did it on a re-issue album. Several more appeared, followed by Disney Star-wars soundtrack!
      Then some researchers realized that Charles Wheatstone had been investigating this effect back in 1830! He even published a physics paper. amasci.com/amateur/holowhtstn.txt But then he got distracted, since the scratch holograms led him to discover 3D human vision, then to discover stereo photography and the stereopticon. He barely missed inventing Victorian Holography! If Wheatstone could know how close he came, he'd be kicking himself even now.

      Actually, we made holograms for both Playboy and Hustler back in the 70's, they were included in various magazine premiums. They were a novelty, and there was no demand for them. In the 80's a few magazines wanted hologram inserts as special features like images of cars, buildings, and company logos. Again they were novelties and not very successful so only offered here and there, in one issue or another.

      Zyriuz2. The two technologies that revolutionized porn: VHS tapes when SONY wouldn't allow their BetaMAX to be used for distributing porn. And Quicktime/FLASH, both which allowed small low res images to be readily distributed, even if you only had a 56K modem. FLASH was faster and more compact, but for a while Quicktime VR was pretty popular for porn.

      Nope, the light source needs to be about a meter away, above the vinyl, with the spotlight aimed at the scratched area.
      Also, a "line source" of light will work. Try one of those aquarium light-bulbs with the visible filament. But in that case the image is very dim, and also you have to line up the bulb so the end of the filament points towards your head.
      Also, you can make your own rotating scratch-holograms in the dead-wax region of old records. All that's needed is a two-points compass. A dull compass point works better for scribing, so perhaps use a small nail in place of the supplied sharp point.

    • @cesarramsan
      @cesarramsan 8 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Whatever you are hearing is not his speakers, they are the speakers from your computer. The sound came from his speakers, to his camera mic, then is was encoded in his computer and then it was encoded again on TH-cam and then you are hearing it again via your own speakers. If it sounds good it is because you have good speakers.

    • @cuda426hemi
      @cuda426hemi 8 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      First of all, 4k is old news now - heck it's on phones and 72" screens and Go Pro cams can shoot even higher res with faster frame rates - (there is no 1440p genius) Last I heard better, faster, bigger has NEVER had to be pushed on anybody. Just ask the 150,000 people that have bought Teslas. And 99% of people couldn't fill in a map of the USA but that doesn't mean they should get hosed! ~

      Why, our friend Mat has done at least two videos on these very things. The latest, from just a week ago, is the Flamingo PS-F9 by Sony; it was produced in the early '80s, but would be comfortable among today's audio equipment especially with the resurgence of vinyl. It was indeed designed to be mounted on a wall, thought it also has a nifty stand mechanism on its base.

      Vestax made a turntable that you hold like a guitar, with shoulder strap included. It played records while you could move it and could even scratch with it. It was meant to be for DJ performances, but it was proof of concept only.

  • @collegeman1988
    @collegeman1988 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    As a child of the 1970s and 1980s, the real reason anyone bought soundtrack albums for movies that such great composers like John Williams (Star Wars, Superman: The Movie, and Raiders of the Lost Ark) had written was there was NO HOME VIDEO in those days and the only way you could enjoy great movies of that period at home was to buy the vinyl soundtrack album, which often contained awesome artwork and pictures and glossy booklets containing some info about the movie as well. While I thought TFA was great, I only had to wait 4 months until the movie came out on Blu-Ray. This vinyl soundtrack holograph with spinning spaceships is a gimmick to get people to buy the soundtrack album, when they really don't need to buy it anymore.
