  • A look at eightban. Collectable, playable mini records from 2004. A deliberately, unashamedly low-fi format.

    *****CORRECTION*****
    Yes the blue tape is Masking Tape not Gaffers Tape. What an amazing gaff - it's probably going to be on a compilation of the most unbelievable mistakes ever made in an improvised youtube voice-over. Perhaps I should start writing scripts and fact checking them, but no... that's not my style....I'm going to keep freestyling straight from the top of the dome, spitting lyrics straight from my bald patch. Sometimes they're right, sometimes they're wrong...but they are always funky fresh. I'm out of here like last year.

      Considering he unboxed a toy, yes it's obvious that it's not a serious music format, nor was I implying that. Other toy companies released other toy-style formats that were similar to their "adult" counterparts but they were released at times that were at least much closer to the peak-time of the format, if not just shortly after their decline of popularity. It seems unusual and surprising to me that this came out so many years after vinyl declined in popularity, yet so many years before the resurgence.

      @MrToradragon 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe Maxx Fordham is not native English speaker, or you are perhaps not one, I don't know, but all words he listed above I have heard. A well you could take in account that in different countries English is bit different, just look on American and British English. I, it is rebellion of some kind, use British English (well my other browser, not this one I am typing this) as default in my browser, and last week i was getting errors with word "fueled", it does not exist in British English, but is commonly used in American English. So some versions of English might allow vinyls, in fact spellcheck knows this word for both, American and British, it might be that use of this form is just rare in your country, or in English that you have learned in school.
      In fact I have met group of Americans (I should say citizens of U.S.A.) few months ago and we had some problems with some words as I learned British English at school, well they had problem as I am used to hear both.

    Those colored records are meant to be replicas of Asahi Sonorama discs put out during the 60's and 70's. They were basically plastic flexi-discs from the looks of it. The added pictures/descriptions are actually storybooks that went along with the record sheets. Wikipedia has a good entry on them....

      If it's a 33, and actually stereo, might even be they used some sort of clever shrinking ray on real records. Or something. I bet the sound quality is purely a symptom of a novelty plastic toy record player, and the bit of tape Techmoan didn't quite hack up properly in his Crosley. Probably if you made the effort you'd get at least LP quality out of it. Why not? Putting grooves into vinyl is a mature technology, we've mastered it.

    I have one of the White Stripes models (and the records). They released one record for this ("Top Special") that, to date, has only ever been released in this format. I ripped the Top Special record to WAV format by using placing the tonearm of a real turntable on top of the Top Special record that was spinning on the 8Ban turntable. (This worked better than you'd expect and I managed to get the angle of the tonearm correct). Yes, it was in Stereo, and yes, the quality is what you'd expect for such a tiny plastic record. The Auxetophone was a non-electric amplified turntable. Used a special little gate, vibrated by the needle. That allowed varying amounts of compressed air through, causing an utter bleeding racket that couldn't really be turned up or down. Clever though that they could make an entirely mechanical amplifier. I think there was a microphone option that used the same principle.
      Actually it was electric in that the air compressor had an electric motor. Only electrical part though. Except maybe the off switch.

    Crosley makes "toy record players" and I'd rather have one of these and it sounds as horrible as a Crosley turntable.

    And to get the last laugh - Crosley improves on the format and releases the RSD3 in 2019 with a line out, and an AT MM cartridge.

      And now the Mini Cruiser and many more record releases.

    I'd love to see a Crosley with a proper needle/stylus on it, that'd make them actually useful!

      the rest is shit too, you'll have to replace the tonearm, the cartridge, the internal electronics or bypass it and send the signal to a phono preamp... it's not worth it.

    !!!!# WHAT ABOUT A LINE OUT MOD VIDEO - then we could hear the bass on stand by me and tell something about the quality on the record

    • @greenaum
      @greenaum 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Or the quality of the needle and cartridge at least, which is probably "awful". I'd like to hear our man do a better job of playing them on a proper record player just to see how good they are though.

    In addition, this Bandai 8Ban can also play Philco/Ford Hip-Pocket 45 RPM records from 1967 through 1969.

    Crosley has "revived" the 3" record with their RSD3.It has a magnetic cartridge and audio out so it can be played thru a regular system.The TT has a speaker builtt into it.It runs from batteries-like the TT shown or a USB.

    @techmoan: can you give me the exact inner diameter of an 8ban disc and the exact outer diameter of the spindle from this ugly green player you used?

    • @buddyclem7328
      @buddyclem7328 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Maxx Fordham! You are confusing inside diameter with outside diameter. He wanted the diameter of the hole in the record. It looks similar to the size of the center hole of a CD.

    Why you didn't open the player?

    Why does albums vinyl records sound like that a horror soundtrack album hissing and slow mode like chopped and screwed?

      Super cheap stylus playing against a super cheap record (not to mention the size). Diamond stylus on good record sounds as good as digital.

    I love Bandai (they’re mostly known in my household for Tamagotchi, the lcd virtual pet), leave it to them to make the kitschiest little music player ever. Would’ve KILLED to get an 8ban and The White Stripes when I was a kid had I known it existed!

  • @bobskie321
    @bobskie321 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    You can play that small record on a Technics 1200 because it's a manual turntable.

    • @bobskie321
      @bobskie321 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      If the tracking error is the same as Crosley at 11:00 mark you can re-align the cartridge because the holes of the headshell are elongated which means you can twist the cartridge. But it's much better to buy a spare headshell for that rather than re-aligning it back when playing conventional records.

    • @greenaum
      @greenaum 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Anyone got a 3D printer? Might be able to knock up an adaptor, and one for the record's centre hole while you're at it.

    • @bobskie321
      @bobskie321 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      But it's not the hole, it's the angle of the cartridge which is not straight. I think conical stylus solves the problem because conical is not sensitive to alignment.
