Agreed. During this episode I caught myself wondering how the producers made the most non-star wars show feel like a perfect Star Wars show. Like, did they just write a political intrigue drama first, then overlayed all the Star Wars bits? If so, bravo! Because it works like gangbusters.
This is literally the best piece of live action SW in 40 years I fucking love it so much. This show is so good it doesn’t even need a popular character to help make it good.
The best parts of Star Wars have always been the politics. The Prequels story line is so heart breaking, the political Struggle. @@rossbaileymusic Star Wars is in a weird place. Some people are adamant it's a kids show and excuse any old dumb shallow fluff. Then this comes as a curve ball, like wonderfully written cold war spy drama. People hated the trade stuff in the pre-quals. I'm enjoying this but it shows the OT had a bit for everybody.
The final scene when Keeno and Andor are walking down the hall makes great use of the light and shadow in the hall way. As they walk down the hall they pass in and out of the overhead light and it's when Keeno is under one of these lights that he gives Andor the answer to the question of how many guards are on each level. Just that little indication that Keeno is having a moment of enlightenment. This series has done an amazing job with it's use of light and shadow.
It's literally the best Star Wars content since Rogue One. I am rewatching all the episodes too and still enjoying them. You couldn't pay me enough to rewatch BOBF or Kenobi.
@@TraceguyRune I did think Kenobi was "the best of the rest" but yeah, it still had too much cheeseball content. I'm think we're in a place where the powers behind Star Wars content are placing Andor in it's own bin. It's the dark, adult Star Wars without force magic and light sabers. And we'll do a couple more seasons of it, and maybe another show with the same true grit. But we're still going to make the other cheese, because that's Star Wars too! I reject the idea that they have to be separate things. Even though the show was not very good overall, Ewen McGregor's portrayal of Obi Wan was excellent. I want to live in a world where there is live action Star Wars that has the quality of Andor AND light sabers.
Rather than iconic characters, they focus on good story which just so happens to be in a Star Wars setting. Everything makes sense, and they are willing to spend the time for immersion and getting to know each of the characters and the repercussions to events
Dude, Dedra was legit terrifying in the beginning. There was one scene with dark lighting on her face and dang! The visuals were so good. And man, that ending was crazy.
Good review, though you're being a bit hard on the doc prisoner. He asked for the bag, to get more room to discuss what he knew about the 100 deaths on Level 2. Which he did voluntarily. I think we'll find out, that the robbery itself wasn't the cause of a lot of this ongoing turmoil. It was ongoing for years, the Emperor is using the robbery as an excuse to accelerate existing Death Star plans.
Bingo. The robbery was the empire turning a negative into a positive. They lose 80 million credits but will now get that back ten fold from the extra forced slave labor.
he asked for the bag the first time because he knew the old man was gone. he asked the SECOND time to get time to chat. and the doc didnt want to talk about level 2 the first time. so you are wrong.
I don’t think Mon and her friend are gonna smash; it seems more in line with this show if her husband suspect smashing, confronts her, and she lies and says they’re smashing to protect what they’re actually up to. Another huge sacrifice for her character.
I don't think she is smashing any men. I don't think Vel is her cousin in reality watch that scene again especially when she says all the good ones are taken. I think Vel used romance to get Mon in the rebellion 100% but she doesn't really love her since she used the same line that was used in her last episode the rebellion comes first we get the rest
Some Notes Imperial Military Intelligence, distinct & sometime competitor of the ISB, is mentioned by Major Partagaz in the meeting. Captain Tigo has been promoted, his three blue squares on his rank badge are now four. But he still takes his cues from Lt. Supervisor Meero, which lends to the idea that the ISB holds more power (at least politically) than their military counterparts, as seen by Admiral Yulareen himself moving to the agency. The door closing cutaway as Bix is being tortured is very reminiscent & pays homage of the same scene from A New Hope. Andor’s team won as seen as them eating with plates. Sent from my iSB
This is the darkest Star Wars project that has ever been made. We're starting to see how evil the Galactic Empire is and how dehumanizing it is living under their rule. Once you get caught up in their system, it's very difficult to get out. When the subordinate just threw the idea of hanging someone as an example, Dedra Meero essentially said, without skipping a beat, "go ahead and have fun, I don't care" like she was being asked how the weather was.
Am really enjoying this series and i hope they quickly do a 2nd season. Part of what i like about this series is the fact that when i 1st saw Andor in Rogue 1 i didnt really like his charactor but watching this and seeing his back story and everything he has been though gives an entirely different perspective
Funny how Dedra was so uncomfortable about being stalked and having this freaky dude say all these admirable things about her, yet she is expert at making others uncomfortable before having them tortured by somebody else other than her. And to be honest, I can't wait to see how Syril's arc twists from here. He's a strange, all-Empire type of bird for now, but I somehow believe he's going to end up with Andor in the Rebellion.
I thought that scene with Dedra being uncomfortable with Syril was actually compelling. She is a high-ranking ISB officer and threatened him (a nobody) if he ever comes near her again, but as is the case with any unwanted attention, it makes a woman (no matter how powerful) very vulnerable. It was so subtly conveyed in that scene and is true in any galaxy. Amazing writing 👏🏽 also yes I am a woman
It's interesting how similar the two characters are though and it's funny to see Syril's interest in her. Really curious about where they are going with him though. With how much time they spend with him, he should be a pretty significant character.
Genuinely doubt he'll go Rebel. All Syril wants is order. He doesn't care about right or wrong, good or evil, he cares about legal and illegal. He represents the morally grey characters who nevertheless get swept up by evil empires because they value order more than justice and are willing to do anything it takes the achieve the former.
@@DarthJarJarSithLord They have had 2 chances to show Senator Binks in the senate arena, they have failed both times...this is my only issue with this incredible tv show. Just give us one little flappy gungan ear bro
I know that Melshi and Andor will eventually break out but I like how their experiences in Imperial prisons drives their missions with the Rebels since Melshi is one of the rebels who goes to the Imperial prison planet to break out Jyn Erso in Rogue One. I imagine their time in prison drives them to liberate as many prisoners of the Empire and possibly get some new Rebel recruits in the process. Neat connection between this and Rogue One.
@ScreenCrush Not sure if anyone’s mentioned it, and I don’t recall you mentioning it in any of the other Breakdown videos, but every time the prisoners are told to put their hands behind their heads, Andor only moves his hands slightly off to the side of his head. It’s another way of him showing how little the Empire is actually monitoring them, and showing his defiance. He also continues to look around during those moments, which everyone is supposed to remain still, and you can see his mind piecing together an escape.
The concept that it takes possibly DAYS to know whats going on directly below is the sort of trippy sci-fi concept that blows my mind. Same goes for the concept the Empire "messed up" and released an inmate to a floor he wasn't suppose to go to. Brutal, and excellent reveal.
It's nice to see a Star Wars show that doesn't glorify war. After watching the latest All Quiet on the Western Front, a Star Wars show centered around young men and women dragged from their home planets to fight for the Empire on planets they've never been would be would be brutal.
One thing I’ve noticed is that each week the opening music when the title “andor” fades in is getting louder and gathering pace as if something is coming
As an old school fanboy who saw THX:1138, I have to mention the similarities this show also has to the sci-fi classic "Metropolis" on so many aesthetic levels. Good stuff, your examinations are supremely detailed. And thanks for the "New Hope" ref. I jumped when I saw it.
There were some truly chilling moments from the Empire this past episode. The torture doctor explaining the death screams from a planet that was fighting against the empire. And the Imperial officer who wanted to hang the previously tortured guy. Was crazy.
i think the most heartbreaking part of this episode was the reasoning for them killing the people in section 2; it was because they realized that a man who was "released" was just recycled into another section of the prison. they're truly never getting out and its so sad seeing as most of them are probably in their for nothing like cassian was. on a lighter note i totally ship dedra and syril 😹
This is the best Star Wars. This show wasn't even on my radar before it came out; but it has blown everything else out of the water. I love a well written slow build show that respects the audience. You realize just how much every other show really just relies on flashy lasers and lightsabers and cameos and fan service to distract you. This is Pure.
I just want to say every time i see your videos they make me happy to watch because of your dog. I had a shih tzu for 14 and a half years but I lost him last December. Even though he looked different from yours your videos show me how much you love your dog. I get really emotional watching them but at the same time I'm so happy that I know i showed my Gizmo the love you show yours. Cherish every moment because I know i did.
This series is brilliant. It is the first time you really get sucked into the Star Wars saga. Building greatly towards the dramatic story of Rogue one, where every dies at the end and all the George Lucas movies kick off!
Mr. ScreenCrush you mentioned at the 4:00 mark that you’d be interested in seeing how the final scene of THX1138 relates to Andor. MIND BLOWN…here’s the Easter egg…….the THX1138 scene call back is the final shot of Andor and Orso on the beach in Rouge One.
Did you notice that Dedra's assistant is getting a bit big for his boots. Interrupting her, carrying out orders without her command and being too forward. He's gonna get sent to the outer rim and Syril will replace him at her side. Then they are gonna get it on!!!
I don’t think so. Dedra isn’t petty like that, she wants talent not ass kissing, and she certainly doesn’t want her stalker, a failed mall cop, in her vicinity
@@biffyqueen She wants talent yes, but she doesn't want to be out shined by some assistant either. When he gained favour with Major Partagaz, her wheels started turning. Was I the only one that saw her internally questioning his position when he started going above his station? She values talent, but she requires total deferment of her staff. Something a weak and in love Syril could give her.
@@Welshguy78No, I don't agree, she may, MAY, reprimand him for jumping up in a meeting, but she's hardly shown she gives a fuck about decorum or office politics. Furthermore, she regularly shares her thoughts with him and theories and encourages thinking outside of the box. Plus, again, Cyril is a failed mall cop stalking her, she's not going to give up a valued assistant for a simp like him. She's certainly not going to have sex with him.
@@biffyqueen I respectfully disagree. She may value her current assistant, but power, position and how she is perceived are of the upmost value to her. Having him userp her at a meeting is bad form and made her look weak. Plus, there was a flash of bashfullness when he confessed his feelings for her. She may be an Imperal officer, but she's still a woman and having a man desire and look at her in this manner is something she probably hasn't experienced in a very long time. Even if it is with from a failed mall cop!
Absolutely gripping episode. I like how you said it feels like a noose is slowly tying around our necks and the show has been doing a great job about increasing the tension with each episode. I watched this episode during breakfast and let my breakfast get cold. Can't wait for next week!
Emblematic of how great this show is, that they are very deliberate in the ways that the score and intro change every single episode. Very little is reused from episode to episode.

Your remark about the medic needing a bag was just on point. YOur reviews are way better than from the other Star Wars-hard fan channels. Thanks and kudos, cheers!
Says a lot too that when the doctor asked for a bag the guard said one was already on the way. Like before even arriving on the scene it was determined whoever was ill was going to be put down because they'll all expendable.
I like this show a lot, could've used some more aliens to diversify the prison a little but im on the edge of my seat the whole episode due to the complexity of not knowing what's going to happen
I think the Woman who met Paak at the Separatist rally was Luthen’s assistant in disguise. Hence the reason why she was always handling transmissions from the planet. Maybe her and Luthen were Septatist sympathizers before becoming Rebels?
Another possible interpretation of the episode title: throughout this and last episode, Ulaf was showing clear signs of early stroke manifestations (TIAs), but _Nobody was Listening_ or paying attention, and so he was worked to death rather than preventing it. Queen Amidala said that democracy dies with thunderous applause, but I think that Andor is painting a different picture: it dies because not enough people are paying attention while there's still enough time to do something about it.
A few days back on reddit i saw someone mention that Andor season 1 and 2 and then Rouge One will become the new "prime" trilogy for SW fans in the future. After seeing the great quality of this show, I do think that might happen
Nah, as much as I like this show, you can't have a "prime" SW with no Force or Jedi. This show is a great companion to it though, but it doesn't have nearly the same appeal.
Bix is tortured with the dying screams of children. This might be the all time darkest thing in Star Wars. And I am including the slaughter of the Jedi younglings.
*This was good episode this week. I really enjoyed Dedra being more serious with Bix & that her & Partagaz's work relationship is being given more trust between the two. And the senate is slowly being shut down as we see here in this episode some are joining the Emperor even more even though there's still some who are in support of Mon Mothma. And Kino Loy's character was great. His shift was precise per what was going on over the course of roughly 48 hours. Good episode & can't wait for episode 10 next week.*
With Dedra they also sewed some seeds that her 2nd in command is getting a bit to conformable jumping in and making decisions. That looks she gives after he leaves the room after he notifies her that he already sent the doctor was interesting. She was warned to watch her back.
@@andrewshandle *That could be the case indeed. He could have a more deeper motive by doing things outside of her knowledge. But, I more so want to believe that he just wants her to know that he's in her corner more than ever because he wants to make sure that her & her crew succeeds. But, we definitely don't want to make it seem like he couldn't gain some sense of ego & pride about himself to want to get a higher promotion in the future.*
@@starwarsunlimiteduniverse for sure, he may be he most loyal person in the entire ISB, but that doesn't mean Dedra doesn't start suspecting him. Her entire rise to power recently was because she went behind other people's back and (possibly) over stepped her bounds. Their entire work culture is built around backstabbing each other, so it'd be interesting to see if she starts getting paranoid.
I thought the final thing that made him he decided to help Andor was he found out there was no escape. Someone finished out their sentence from one floor and was reassigned to another floor. Everyone that found out on floor 2 was killed off so the word wouldn't spread. He kept mentioning "You have so many X days left" in the beginning
You missed the scene where Val leaves Mon alone and the camera zooming makes the illusion that the archway, similar to the Imperial Simbol, is trapping her. Beautiful scene
One you many have missed! I noted, near the beginning of the series, that it shares a similar dialogue style and tone of dread that is seen on HBO's 'Chernobyl'. And now there are least FOUR (that I've spotted) actors from Chernobyl in this show: Stellan Skarsgard - Luthen Alex Ferns - Linus Mosk Robert Emms - Supervisor Lonni Jung Adrian Rawlins - The doctor/medic in the prison
Additional easter egg: In this episode (and in #8), we hear the sound of an interrogator droid (from Leia's interrogation in A New Hope) when in the presence of Dr. Orst.
When the “doc” tells the guard to get a bag and cart…guard said they were already on the way. Meaning no matter the issue, patient dies. That is their protocol. Adding to how little they think of the workers.
Love the break down… as referenced and allegorized through out you’re break down as well as the show.. the entire galaxy is in a snare or net that all people / citizens living under the Imperial Rule can be plucked from or simply taken to replace all those prisoners that were killed on level 2 in episode 9. It didn’t take much for Andor to be taken into custody even when he did nothing wrong. However the Empire needs “prisoners” aka slaves to make their parts in their jail / factory facilities. So this analogy of “fishing” is and can be used for the entire galaxy at large under the Empires rule.
Bix's torture was reminiscent of the US torture programs as part of the War on Terror in the 00s. Pretty easy to see the relation to Iraq or Gitmo, when the chamber that Bix is held in on Ferrix looks a lot like the background of the Fallujah torture photos

Yep, and that light cue means Caesar is about to go Gollum on their ass, cuttlefish or not.
I liked the fact that when the medic called for a bag and a trolley both were already on their way
Can't believe more people aren't watching Andor. Even if you don't like Star Wars it's incredibly good TV.
It really is. But you know there aren't any cute puppets, or stupid catch phrases, clownish characters, or fake tough-guy/girl acting.
I agree. Best thing I’ve watched in a LONG time
It's literally the best Star Wars content since Rogue One.
And man, that ending was crazy.
scarier than Deirdre Hall?
Yeah much better
I don't think she is smashing any men. I don't think Vel is her cousin in reality watch that scene again especially when she says all the good ones are taken. I think Vel used romance to get Mon in the rebellion 100% but she doesn't really love her since she used the same line that was used in her last episode the rebellion comes first we get the rest
I don't think it will be her husband, I think it will be sacrificing the relationship with her daughter.
@@ccornelius100 interesting twist but I don’t think that’s the way the dialog and the personal interaction was pointing. But maybe 🤷♂️

Some Notes
Imperial Military Intelligence, distinct & sometime competitor of the ISB, is mentioned by Major Partagaz in the meeting.
The prison is like Jeremy Bentham’s Panopticon, where the prisoners assume they are being watched all the time and eventually become their own guards.
This show is so good. And it keeps getting better.
The level of detail in this show is simply amazing
Nah, Syril is totally going to get himself suicided by the ISB or sent off the a secret prison because he knows too much and is too annoying.
That's a good point - she's literally arguing for more surveillance but is horrified at being surveilled herself.
What did you think of the episode?
I enjoyed it, I’m hoping to see a gungan or examples of the emprie being awful to non human creatures
It was good
@@DarthJarJarSithLord They have had 2 chances to show Senator Binks in the senate arena, they have failed both times...this is my only issue with this incredible tv show. Just give us one little flappy gungan ear bro
Please keep up the great work!!!
Terrific!
I really wonder how many will escape
I'd like to point out the camera behind Dedra during Bix's interrogation are the same ones that Han and Luke shoot out in the Deathstar's Prison.
It's nice to see a Star Wars show that doesn't glorify war. After watching the latest All Quiet on the Western Front, a Star Wars show centered around young men and women dragged from their home planets to fight for the Empire on planets they've never been would be would be brutal.
Ryan ,and Doug are hilarious as always thank another great video ,and breakdown 😂.
That scene where serkis finally tells Andor how many guards there are was such a perfect ending
Never more than Twelve
This is not an Easter Egg video, this is a straight up analysis.
Was crazy.
& how they just gonna kill the pilot they caught like its nothing as not 2 alarm the Rebels
Syril: Step on me.
Dedra: Fuck off.
The acting in this episode is PHENOMENAL
i think the most heartbreaking part of this episode was the reasoning for them killing the people in section 2; it was because they realized that a man who was "released" was just recycled into another section of the prison. they're truly never getting out and its so sad seeing as most of them are probably in their for nothing like cassian was. on a lighter note i totally ship dedra and syril 😹
Nice use of capitol letters in your name.
lol yeah hopefully they die painfully together

@@TraceguyRune Yes it is. Well done.
I like all the actors in this show, but Andy Serkis is on another level! 🤩🤩
Oh my, I want this to happen so much!
Only thing better than an episode of Andor, is the ScreenCrush breakdown of an episode of Andor 😂
Absolutely gripping episode. I like how you said it feels like a noose is slowly tying around our necks and the show has been doing a great job about increasing the tension with each episode. I watched this episode during breakfast and let my breakfast get cold. Can't wait for next week!
"How is she trapped? She is rich and powerful. And oh so pretty." Oh Doug you are my favorite. He should get his own shirt. More Doug please.
I loved the 80's. Andor the series makes me feel like im back in the 80's watching a reasonably entertaining film.
Emblematic of how great this show is, that they are very deliberate in the ways that the score and intro change every single episode. Very little is reused from episode to episode.
“Is that thing going to trial” 😂 underrated line
Doug singing Glen Campbell - love it.

*_presents the crying anguish of children from a now extinct alien species as an Imperial torturing device_*
Andy Serkis is *so* fantastic in this show! I am more and more a fan of his acting, not just his characters.
I really have to gratulate you Ryan and your whole team because this review really shows your love to detail on what is happening on screen.
Dedra's description of how Paak and Bix started working together was reminiscent of the Red Scare and McCarthyism
I like this show a lot, could've used some more aliens to diversify the prison a little but im on the edge of my seat the whole episode due to the complexity of not knowing what's going to happen
They might be segregated out in the other Towers. Easier to bathe and feed if everyone has the same physical needs.
Another great breakdown. I’m able to pick up most of the Easter Eggs while viewing but I come here to see what I missed… and for Doug :)
I think the Woman who met Paak at the Separatist rally was Luthen’s assistant in disguise. Hence the reason why she was always handling transmissions from the planet. Maybe her and Luthen were Septatist sympathizers before becoming Rebels?
For sure, it had to be Kleya.
Everything about your videos is very well done! I don't even mind the embedded commercials or self-promos because they are so well done!
Great update to your lighting!!!! Love to see these little upgrades to your production!
An old man dying of a stroke has nothing to do with democracy. It's just negligence.
@@andrewshandle i also kinda agree now, ig we could say that andor and R1 would represent the grounded sw universe
I have to say little Doug makes the show for sure. You guys are great. Good job.
Bix is tortured with the dying screams of children. This might be the all time darkest thing in Star Wars. And I am including the slaughter of the Jedi younglings.
The powerlessness of the Senate as depicted here is extremely reminiscent of the Roman Senate under the Emperors.
Another great episode, the tension builds and builds. Cool to see that Andow is already trying to escape.
thanks for noticing that smash cut. I was all queued up in the comments to mention it. *high five*
Ryan, you forgot to mention that the handrails in this episode were the first ever depicted in a live-action Star Wars!
Do you think it's a reach to say that the Empire never bothered with handrails because they value people (including their own troops) so little?
Best star wars content in yeeeears!!! Love mando, but this is more grown up and I'm here for it!
Cassian cutting the pipe each day also reminded me of Shawkank Redemption, when Andy did a little work everyday to get out. All they had was time.
The Senate will continue in some form for another 5yrs until Episode IV when Tarkin announces that it has been disbanded .
I really appreciate your breakdown of the episode, Ryan. Well done, sir. I am truly enjoying Andor as well.
One month has passed since Aldhani and it seems to me that Meero’s success over Belvin may have gotten him the Admirial Brom Titus treatment.
Best Episode insights of all the "Breakdown" videos. Thank you. Great "cuts" and references.
8:08 - This is one of the best lines in all of Star Wars. Padme was awesome.
You missed the scene where Val leaves Mon alone and the camera zooming makes the illusion that the archway, similar to the Imperial Simbol, is trapping her. Beautiful scene
Ryan…you and Doug do such a good job with these videos. I always look forward to them. High Five!
One you many have missed!
I noted, near the beginning of the series, that it shares a similar dialogue style and tone of dread that is seen on HBO's 'Chernobyl'. And now there are least FOUR (that I've spotted) actors from Chernobyl in this show:
Stellan Skarsgard - Luthen
Alex Ferns - Linus Mosk
Robert Emms - Supervisor Lonni Jung
Adrian Rawlins - The doctor/medic in the prison
Also both Andor and Chernobyl were produced by Sanne Wohlenberg.
Bingo!
And or is a great show. It’s not your regular kids Star Wars. Love it keep it up.
Additional easter egg: In this episode (and in #8), we hear the sound of an interrogator droid (from Leia's interrogation in A New Hope) when in the presence of Dr. Orst.
Really really enjoying this show and the slow build up
It is mentioned by Dedra that the pilot they captured was heading to Kafrene. Ring of Kafrene is where we first met Andor in Rogue One.
@4:41 might be the greatest moment in screen crush history.
Great analysis.
Also, love the Spider-Man 2 reference in your closing skit/joke.
When the “doc” tells the guard to get a bag and cart…guard said they were already on the way. Meaning no matter the issue, patient dies. That is their protocol. Adding to how little they think of the workers.
Hey Ryan, your vids are essential viewing after every show. Thanks so much!
I'm just waiting for Dedra to ask her next prisoner how many lights they see.
There are four lights!
The interrogation technique was the coolest thing in Star Wars for a long time. Love this show.
Doug's High Fives are adorable
Anyone else see the 7 finished frames on the trolly Andor was pushing to add to the 7 theme throughout the prison.
Who would have guessed that Kino’s eventual turn would set in motion a path to becoming Snoke. 😂
Who would have guessed Kino's eventual turn would lead the way to Rogue One, thus setting forward the path to the destruction of the Death Star
That wasn't torture. There is no one relation between Gitmo and the Empire...other than they are both prisons
