    Thanks for your information. As a 75 year old, retired, old guy getting back into cycling I appreciate honest opinions from those with more experience(s). I try to do a lot of research when considering purchasing almost anything so as to make that limited fixed income go farther. I am cycling to have a better and healthier life, not for competition, but still wish to have better components such as wheels and tires. So thanks again for your experiences and opinions. It adds to my research!

    I had a pair of the Zipp 303s wheel set, couldn't get rid of them fast enough for that very reason. Also I found it impossible to seat a tire on the side of the road when I flatted and needed to put a tube in.

    In europe Zipp 303s are 850€ and are a steal for that price. I have them and had no issues with crosswinds. Wind doesn't even move them. I don't know if it is more problem with different geometry bikes or something but I can tell that the wind is not a problem.

    With how good Chinese wheel manufacturers are getting, there is no point to go over spending $1500. The Elitewheels Drive are only $1200 and offer as good performance as a $2000+ wheel as well as weight.

    Very good episode, DB! I believe Shimano has always put reliability & quality on top of their priority list. Obviously almost every cyclist started with Shimano, then hated it for being mainstream, then for some reason went back to Shimano for its quality. Been there, done that. Now back on the saddle (only this time on paved roads), I use the Giant SLR 1 42mm → great set of wheels, very reliable, very little air leak, extremely good on long climbs, very stable on windy conditions (unlike my Elite wheels BWT), and smooth rolling hubs. Combined with the Cadex Race 25 tires (measures 26mm), they give me confidence on cornering. However, I only weigh 60kg. The main downside is they’re very noisy (and perhaps the internal rim width; but I know an ultra endurance guy that used them with Schwalbe Pro One 28 with no issue).

    Bravo DC !!!! This is exactly the kind of video most riders need when gathering information on what a given wheel brand and depth will give them regarding Cost/Performance/Quality when upgrading. If it was my wallet deciding then I'd say the Hunt are great wheels for all the reason's you mention...the hubs are loud so be aware you won't sneak up on anyone. I would love to ride those Dura-Ace C50's though and if I could stretch my budget or find a nice set used that would be my overall choice. @@DiabeticCycling I've ridden my 303s primarily on my gravel bike so much less wind on those rides with the tree's and wind protected roads I usually ride. I also have Firecrest 303-404 and those I've ridden on the road in windy conditions and they've performed well. The thing is once you've had a bad experience with something it's hard to forget and when it's happened a few times like on your different rides then it's better to step away from those wheels.

    I’ve been leaning towards the 4454 Hunts but you really make me want those Dura Ace. I do sort of like a loud hub though. My stock wheels on my Prince (Fulcrums) only got used a couple times and they had the quietest hub I’ve ever ridden. Stealthy is kind of cool, but it’s also nice if you end up on a bike path for a bit to have some noise so people hear you coming and move over easier

    • @DiabeticCycling
      @DiabeticCycling  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Duane, it does not get ANY LOUDER than the hub in 44/54. What you see and hear in this video does not do the sound any justice. I reckon it's one of the loudest if not the loudest any wheels.

    • @dvs70
      @dvs70 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Duane, just change the grease or remove the big globsthey pack them with. I removed some, went with a lighter coating of a good grease. My Fulcrums are louder now, although they're back-up, back-ups. My Hunts are louder than any hub I've heard in person. My Racing Zeros are the middle ground. I'm looking at another set of Hunts with a deeper section. Thanks DC, your content is very good brother!

    I just stumbled onto your TH-cam video and I find you, and your review very refreshing. You seem like you would honestly take on a new challenge. The challenge I want to present to you is clearly visible in the "first 3 seconds" of this video introduction. If you notice the fast spinning wheel is oscillating because the wheel has "No Rotational Balance". Fact is out of balance wheels create interrupted inertia which eats Watts like a big bowl of LuckyCharms. That said, I think everyone doing any kind of high performance comparison reviews should carefully balance the wheels first to level the playing field.
    The problem is aerodynamic tech on wheels have hit a barrier, so the next logical step to make aerodynamic wheels and bikes go faster is "BALANCE"! The reason wheel manufacturers avoid the subject is because they don't understand it and it's effects. Also they clearly don't know how to make a balance system that's 100% consumer, dealer, OEM and manufacturer friendly. Also there is no consumer demand, yet..... Frankly speaking wheel balance tech now, is just like aerodynamics was 30 years ago when I worked for the Japan Group. I would constantly ask ARAYA rim division to make aerodynamic shaped rims, only to be met with laughter and be technically ridiculed.
    Anyways, I'm going to e-mail you to give you some of my knowledge on the subject of wheel balance as I have been studying bicycle wheel balance for over 15 years. It would be nice to see someone like you be the first to fully understand this new technology and be the first review and introduce the added performance balanced wheels have to offer.
    By the way, I now live in Seattle, and from the looks of your video, that's Angeles Crest Hy in So Cal. When I was a Cat-1 I used to train all over that highway. Please look for my e-mail. Sincerely Dan Sotelo

    I've got Reserve 40/44 wheels built with DT 180 hubs. While my wheels cost $2499 with the DT 180 hubs, the wheels built with DT 350 hubs only cost $1799. The wheels have an internal width of 25.5mm in front and 25mm in back, which is pretty much what I wanted so that I could comfortably run fatter tires for gravel. Depths are 40mm in front and 44mm in back. I love 'em. They weigh about 1370g, yet the rims feel very burly. The rims have mini-hooks, so tire retention is better. I run tubeless and can go 4 or 5 days without having to add air (I run 30mm Conti GP 5000 S TR tubeless tires, which measure 33mm wide when inflated). As a bonus, the Fillmore valves are awesome.

      @@andrewbardwell1763 , I'm completely chuffed with them. They came out of the box true and are still perfectly true after 4000 miles. I use their Fillmore valve stems and have had zero issues with the valve stems clogging. I have not found any voids on the exterior or inside the rim bed. As a test when I got them, I mounted 30mm Conti GP5000TR S tires, and they held air for almost a week with no sealant inside. And the tires were easy to mount.
      The DT180 hubs were a splurge on my part (the bike is my dream bike). They're not too loud, and like all DT hubs, they're dead reliable.
      I've hit a couple pot holes and a few bike bumps on the road and on gravel, and rims have zero damage.
      I couldn't be happier with these wheels.

    I just bought the DA C36, and I’m completely mystified how you get the silent coasting you demonstrate. For me, there’s plenty of the usual ratchet noise-just like every other hub with a DT Swiss-style mechanism. GCN’s review has the same noise, so I don’t think mine is defective. Hi Nathan. C50s are NOWHERE NEAR harsh. One of the best wheelset I've had pleasure of riding pound per pound. That said, C36 at 100 grams lighter also don't lose much in terms of being as "aero" as the 50s. In reverse, I don't notice much of that 100 grams of additional weight going from 36s to 50s. For all around day to day, special day, whatever, I would say 50s would be an EXCELLENT choice.

    The issue I take with the Mercury S5's is that the internal width is 17mm which is fairly narrow by todays standards. The industry is moving towards wider rims due to it having better aerodynamic, comfort and grip (bigger contact patch with the road) benefits.
    In contrast with the S5. I recently upgraded to some budget carbon hoops from 9velo - RV55's. They are 55mm depth and weigh in at 1580g. 9velo quoted them to weigh in at 1567g which is perfectly fine compared to my HUNT super dura's which were quoted at 1595g on their website but weighed 1770g when they arrived. And that 175g difference wasnt because HUNT had packed the wheel bearings with extra grease either. I had my bike mechanic have a look at it and they did it at no extra cost as I already had my bike with them for pretty big overhaul.
    HUNT aside. These RV55s are very much an upgrade. The only real downside so far with this 9velo wheelset are the Sapim Race spokes instead of CX-Xray spokes but I knew that going into it. I paid $630 and opting for the more expensive CX-Ray spoke package would have kicked the price up to $800 which was out of my budget and not worth it. given how cheap those spokes can be bought for in the UK.
    Ive only had a chance to take them out for a short spin but so far I like them and im trying to teach myself to take it easy trying not to cook the brake track 😅😅 rim brake problems...
