really wish modern mario rpgs would bring back parties like this game has. it's so fun mixing and matching and strategizing a party comp, more so than just picking one partner character at a time like paper mario imo.
As someone who was obsessed about Mario RPG as a kid (despite being born over half a decade after it came out and not even *playing it* until earlier this year), I think it's neat to see someone talking about it!
Dude that don't matter you're all good I literally live for Mario and I never even played this game until now with the remake, I just watched the credits roll and let me say it's one of those games that got me it tugged at my strings I cried cause it was over...I completely understand why this game is as big as it is and Im about to play the Original version right now...I just can't get enough I wanna experience the Original forsure.
I loved the music too! I will only say this: The battle music grew tiring for me, and that is only because as a kid I remember trying for the 100 super jumps, which meant I spent a long time in battle. Various family members would walk by while I was trying and would be like "dooo dooo doo doo do do do" mimicking the battle theme and would ask me "how do you listen to that over and over?" and because of that I was like "hm, maybe this song is annoying"😅
Even though I’ve never played this game or watched a playthrough, it still feels somewhat nostalgic to me because of how often the music has been used in TH-cam videos over the years, especially the forest theme.
It's refreshing to hear a retrospective that really "gets" Peach as a character in SMRPG. Her development as a character in battle nicely reflects the "in-between" that you described her as, starting off with stats that are a little lackluster and only support magic but having a wildly steep growth curve that bring her to your top tier of offensive options by the endgame (such as her attack power equalling Mario's by the end of the game, her final spell being her first offensive one which is also the strongest non-Ultra Jump spell in the game tied with Geno Flash, etc...), which I think is a nice tie-in to the fact that she's never had to learn how to fight before but is determined to learn to defend her people.
Opal putting out a hefty review on a game I'm super into AGAIN? Splendid. You've always got some crazy timing for these things, I was just about to set up a run of that SMRPG Armageddon ROM hack.
It adds a bunch of extra stuff like multiple timed inputs, superbosses, extra characters (Luigi, Rosalina, etc as NPCs), new weapons etc. Tons of new stuff for people who actively replay SMRPG. It's also super tough (even for veteran players). Look into it if you're interested.
Fun fact, SMRPG wasnt expected to do well in the west. This game was coming out months before the N64 was to be released in a world that was already selling off the "kids consoles" for the PlayStation. While i did follow news of SMRPG from nintendo power, there was a large marketing push being done from places like Blockbuster where you could rent the game for free with a coupon. around this time, Blockbuster recently updated their rental policy from 3days to 5 days before late charges would start to hit. I 100% believe the tactic was to get people to play and realize 5 days wasnt enough with thia game. i particularly rememebr having to rent it out four times in different stores in the span of like 2 years. We had to return the game the first time by the Yakovich fight, the second time i finally made it to the axem rangers before returning. Third time i dont remember lol. But i finally beat it on the 4th rental.
That's a great story! I grew up in the same era, but I'd never beaten a game by just renting it and playing through it, that's awesome! When I played this game, it was my first RPG, so I'd skip most of the battles and was way too under-leveled. I remember I got stuck on the Bowyer fight in the forest maze. I'd try every day, two or three attempts, and did so for over a month before finally lucking out. I made the game way too hard on myself haha
I love paper mario ttyd too but mario rpg is my fav game of all time and the remake seems like a pipe dream but as soon as paper mario got announced hyped seem to die =/ i hope it does well so we can get a sequel

Fun fact: 9999 isn't the maximum damage in the game.
It's Luigi wishing to be like his brother. Critical hit to the feels.
now, after you scene the direct? yes. there is 9999 damage
now the internet is broke. because paper mario 1000 year door is coming back for nintendo switch in 2024
Super Mario RPG is near and dear to my heart, and you are absolutely right that not near enough people are talking about the remake.

It feels like smrpg was a large part of the insparation for mario's smash moveset
28:55 FINALLY the song

What does the armageddon rom hack do?

To this day I still wonder what a true Super Mario RPG sequel would have look like under Squaresoft

Valentina looks like, exactly the same in the remake.
I was mainly referring to them removing her boob jiggle when she takes damage.
Torte is a German stereotype lol
