There is only one Michael Crawford. He is simply amazing. He will always be THE one and only Phantom of the Opera. It will always be his role. Just love everything he has ever done. An incredible talent. Love him.
0:00 I love how Sarah has a kind of wonderment and awe when she’s explains the part of the show when Christine gives the Phantom back his mask. It’s like a child explaining their favourite part of a story, it's so cute!
Yes. Michael Crawford made the show. HIS body language, HIS powerful moving voice and everything in his particular interpretation of the Phantom brought it all to life. Others were good but never remotely as good as Crawford and never will be.
Agreed. Incredible performances. Attended three with Crawford and had no desire to see any others play the role as a result. You couldn't have stated the matter any better.
I find it sad that the new generation is all obsessed with Ramin and Gerard, when Crawford definitely played the true character at it's most authentic.
In that cause, Andrew should have ended it completely. It makes no sense giving a life to this musical with new actors, doesn’t it? Every Phantom of the latter generation appreciates that Michael Crawford has made a history, but everybody else, especially those who are not involved with the play as its actors, always whines and compares how they’re not like Michael Crawford. Of course they’re not. It’s different people obviously.
You can see how much work he put into playing his role thru him in it and i this dedication thru him is awesome. He truly had his role timeless in this
Crawford's magnificent voice, his experience as a comedian using body language and pratfalls and his expertise as a tightrope walker made him perfect for this show! Every expression, every movement evoked so much emotional response from the audience it's almost beyond description.
I saw this on here before then it disappeared. Thanks for uploading it again. I have two long segments of Michael in rehearsal on my PC which I really love too. I love seeing the rehearsal process of this. Plus you can see Michael do it all without the mask! Love it!
I was fortunate enough to see Michael Crawford in the Los Angeles production...about 30 times (blush) because I knew I was witnessing history in the making. Much like there's not other King than Yul Brynner in The King and I, or no other Henry Higgins than Rex Harrison; to me, there is no other Phantom than MC, and I've seen at least five other actors play the role, including Robert Guillaume. I'm sorry to say I walked out on that show.
I started the video and I was like “hey there is Steve, awesome!” then the video continued and they showed even more of Steve Barton. :) You can easily tag his name in the video, that way more people will be able to find it. Thanks for sharing!!!
GOD!! I LOVE Michael Crawford! And, I also love Andrew Lloyd Weber. I saw it on Broadway...4th row, center stage...and bawled my eyes out at the end. I love the movie too even though it's been changed and tweaked somewhat. I think Gerard's Phantom is super sexy and if I were Christine in the movie, would have definitely have stayed with him. I'm now reading the book and have found out that the Phantom actually has a name...it's Erik.
I've heard a lot of people who feel the same way you do. Which is why I think Love Never Dies was made "which I personally hate". But I have to say any relationship that is started by someone manipulating you into thinking that he is the Angel of your dead father, is a really unhealthy relationship that is doomed to fail.
@Cielosta indeed. everyone in my generation thought that Phantom was always a musical and they were shocked to find out that there were movies and books that existed before the musical.
I thank those designers haha, I mean, his hands are as you said, really huge and I love how he moved them while playing the Phantom. I feel so sad because I was born hmmm, too late haha, and I couldn't watch him as the Phantom live :'( English is not my language haha, but I can say I adore how "fluffy" sounds :3
Those other Phantom's have not come and gone! I absolutely love Michael Crawford, but I still love Lon Chaney Sr., Claude Rains, and all those other phantoms. Good gosh people!
The Claude Rains Phantom is underrated. I do think adding the unnecessary character just to have Nelson Eddy in the film was silly, but Claude Rains portrayed the Phantom very well.
yes the book is wonderful. Well written and entertaining. It's one of the few musical-inspirations that i can read. (others such as Oliver were too different) lol
Yeah, it sounds so cute and cool haha. So sad you couldn't watch Michael neither :(. I envy everyone who got to see him, Sarah and Steve ToT. I was born in 1995, so... The only time I saw Phantom live (or something alike) was in a short representation made by some of my school partners boooo. I am waiting for Phantom to come back to my country one day. :C
@cchen98006 the 25th anniversary is October the 5th, starring Ramin Karimloo and Sierra Boggess...(not my favorites, honestly) BUT that performance WILL be taped and sold on DVD
@bearanease Actually, it's quite common in stage performances to place the microphone in the hair, because it's harder to see from the audience, thus assisting in keeping the illusion of the other world on-stage alive. Besides, pinning microphones to the costumes of actors that have to throw themselves around on the stage is a very bad idea. The microphone cords are very fragile and being yanked abruptly would result in a several-hundred dollar piece of equipment being destroyed.
i have read the book, seen the 2004 movie, and seen multiple performances thru youtube on broadway and i have to say.... the movie makes you want her to be with raoul the book makes you want her to be with phantom (Erik) and broadway lets you choose (but follows the storyline that she must be with raoul) im team Phantom....hbu?
Exactly. Honestly, Andrew seems very arrogant. In every interview of him that I've seen, he acts like he was the savior of "Phantom", that his adaptation is SO much better than the original book or various films. Did he revive interest in the story? Yes, but there were great (and better--sorry, love the ALW show, but it's true) adaptations of the story before his came out. Lon Chaney's portrayal, for instance, is a classic and the definitive depiction of Erik, in my opinion.
@Cielosta Which completely destroyed how Leroux envisioned him. Sure he was sympathetic, but he was also a sociopath and sadistic killer, which people seem to overlook. He was a horror icon for decades before Webber turned him into a musical star.
others***** combining is only wish fulfilling fantasy>>>it's the performers beautiful charming talented deliveries is what gives uniqueness ... ... ...******give credit to the one due credit*****
"Unlike the other Phantoms who have come and gone in popular entertainments . . ." God, why do people keep trivializing Leroux, the other amazing actors who have donned the mask, and most of all, Erik himself (yes, I believe he lived)? I know it's not the newscaster's fault, someone writes his lines, but in every documentary I've seen, they build up the ALW show and nearly pee on the others. Yes, the musical's wonderful and all that jazz, but show some respect for the greats who came before.
@geschreiben Don't get me wrong, I love this version as much as the next Phan, I just think the others deserve more respect. Andrew's version wasn't the first to make us empathize with Erik--Lon Chane did an excellent job in the role without ever saying a word, and Erik's need for love and acceptance is all too clear in the original "marginalized horror/mystery story".
Michael Crawford rehearsal footage from 1986 and your problem is vanity? listen to his voice and appriciate you can see it he wasn't exactly young back then
John Owen-Jones and Katie Hall or Gina Beck should have been the 25th anniversary. John & Katie were the closest pair to match Erik and christine in Leroux's novel since Michael & Sarah. I despise ALW and the scumbag mackintosh for what they did.
I felt the same way as Hal Prince when I first listened to All I Ask Of You three years ago. It's so heartbreaking that ALW decided to destroy the beauty and magic of the show with that nonsense money grabbing "sequel" and more the race swapping of the characters. Nothing good can remain in the disgusting, wicked world we live now.
Sierra is only popular because the show was release in dvd. If they had cast Katie Hall or Gina Beck and John Owen-Jones no one would care about her and the persian guy.

Jane Eyre So very true.

All hail King Michael Crawford
"The show is guaranteed to run well into the next decade..."
Ahh, I wonder if they could have foretold just how long it would run
Crawford is still the best Phantom
This is still the longest running show on Broadway.
WOW So good to see this after all these years! This was history in the making!!Thank God for TH-cam! Love it
I saw this on here before then it disappeared. Thanks for uploading it again. I have two long segments of Michael in rehearsal on my PC which I really love too. I love seeing the rehearsal process of this. Plus you can see Michael do it all without the mask! Love it!
I literally listen to the hole musical every night! I love it!! It makes me cry, makes me happy.
Emma Richards me too
Same that always what I felt when I watch or listen to “phantom of the opera”.
And it's still on Broadway ❤
I was fortunate enough to see Michael Crawford in the Los Angeles production...about 30 times (blush) because I knew I was witnessing history in the making. He thought she knew he was the phantom.
"In all your fantasies
you always knew
that man and mystery
were both in you"
@Cielosta indeed. everyone in my generation thought that Phantom was always a musical and they were shocked to find out that there were movies and books that existed before the musical.
Fantastic. Amazing, Wonderful.

Webber's Phantom revolutionized how the world sees The Phantom.
i love the photoshoot's scene!
yes the book is wonderful. Well written and entertaining. It's one of the few musical-inspirations that i can read. (others such as Oliver were too different) lol

Omg thank you so much for telling me that you're an angel! :) Good to knoww!
Angel of Music :3
Thank you Bob
they're LEGENDS!
Siempre serà el mejor musical jamàs creado.....bravo!!!!
"...vitually guarunteed to run into the next decade..." and the next and the next...
mymostpreciouslife and the next
...bet they didn't know that it would still be on broadway to this day.
victoriaenciso or this day
@@beneddiected Not this day 😔
Kooteh they won’t stop being on Broadway. Not until I get to see it live
@@beneddiected It's not opening on West End until at least 2021 they announced it 😭😭
Kooteh Yeah I can wait for end of term holiday next year :)
Yeah, his hands! *o* I liked the fluffy hair too, actually my hair is naturally curly and fluffy so... haha.
Tonight, the POTO celebrates its 30th consecutive year on Broadway.
Ohmygosh...is there a recorded version of the musical?? (DVD)?? ill pay anything for it haha
@cchen98006 the 25th anniversary is October the 5th, starring Ramin Karimloo and Sierra Boggess...(not my favorites, honestly) BUT that performance WILL be taped and sold on DVD
RUG needs to take down the clips of the 25 anniversary and the o4 movie down and put more clips of the original cast up on their channel!!
I Love SARAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D

Crawford is the best
Is the book good??

this is so cool is there recorded version of the musical?? like a dvd or something?? id love to buy it at any price! haha

@Scar2401 they actually did a pretty fantastic job together
"Unlike the other Phantoms who have come and gone in popular entertainments . . ."

This show really didn't have a lot going for it without Crawford. The way 20-20 talks it's as if it was a masterpiece.
why? (honest question, before anyone flames me)
haette steve gern in dieser rolle gesehen er fehlt ein ganz toller kuenstler und mensch
@geschreiben Don't get me wrong, I love this version as much as the next Phan, I just think the others deserve more respect. Kinda kills the mood watching Michael Crawford rehearse "Music of the Night" in a dorky sweater...
Michael Crawford rehearsal footage from 1986 and your problem is vanity? listen to his voice and appriciate you can see it he wasn't exactly young back then
His voice is still great, it's just kind of a funny outfit, contrasted with the seriousness of the song.
I aint bothered about his jumper , he was rehearsing , his vocie was the main thing
what is he supposed to wear?
Laura Evans Not for me-- I just hear his beautiful voice! 😃❤️🦋
John Owen-Jones and Katie Hall or Gina Beck should have been the 25th anniversary. John & Katie were the closest pair to match Erik and christine in Leroux's novel since Michael & Sarah. I despise ALW and the scumbag mackintosh for what they did.

FETUS CAMERON MACKINTOSH FFGTRDDFH
I'm so pissed at him for what he's done to the UK & US tours. :(
:D
Didn't Andrew Webber leave his first wife for Sarah Brightman?
The role was created for Sarah, but Sierra has made the role her own.
Sierra and Ramin are overrated as holy hell.
Sarah will always be Christine.
Sierra is only popular because the show was release in dvd. If they had cast Katie Hall or Gina Beck and John Owen-Jones no one would care about her and the persian guy.
John Owen-Jones and Katie Hall or Gina Beck should have been the 25th anniversary leads. ALW and mackintosh are two mercenary scumbags.
Who is the oaf who invented those silly, distracting, stuck-on-forehead microphones?
The oaf that knew there wasn't the technology available in that period to make them any smaller but knew that nobody would see them from the audience
