I will never understand why people call this “gatekeeping.” We are literally spoon-feeding these people with knowledge about the subculture. If we wanted to truly gatekeep, we would withhold information about the music and allow them to continue to be misinformed. I’m just so sick and tired of being accused of gatekeeping and being sexualised by random people online.
saying that black people cant be goth is like saying white girls cant like the blues. Its dumb, music doesn't have a colour, anyone can join any music subculture if they adore the music.
I honestly never heard the term gatekeeper used until I started making goth content. It's baffling that you have a group of people who when you, as you said essentially spoon and feed them information - they gasp and horror and call you a gatekeeper. Surely you're handing them the keys to the gate.
Me as a black goth guy since the early 2000s: I hope he takes the time to study the subculture instead of just looking at tiktok. I love my Darkwave and I never cared what anyone thought, still don't. I see more of us black and POC folks in the scene. I myself am learning how to create Darkwave.🖤
That's good to hear. The feeling of not being accepted is terrible on its own but feeling it down to your DNA is so definitive. It sucks that people walk around feeling like that.
"You can't be goth if you're black." Its really surprising that this myth just refuses to die, especially with how many black men I know that are a prominent part of my local goth community. Hell, one of the bigger goth clubs is owned by a black couple.
I had a bestfriend who's goth and black. He looked great! Upside down cross earrings; black metal band shirts, usually modified; shaved head; he did his eyeliner in wings. And he was quite the ladies man if you couldn't tell by his description. He looked royal, and if you made him white he wouldn't rock it as good
@@TheOneTruePatriot I so wish this guy could see him. I think he would probably feel much more confident. I can understand how that could probably feel isolating when You can't see goths of other ethnicities.
The sad thing is that the majority of people that spread the lie that black people cannot be Goths, just so happen to be people from the Black community itself... I do not know why so many people want to limit themselves and every one they know to a racial stereotype and the music associated with it
Laurie Anderson has said that it was Steve Martin who made it, and Elvis Costello (who has also been attributed as the author) believes it was Martin Mull. There's an article from 1979 that says it's Martin Mull, so it probably was him.

@@starscreamthecruel8026 If you actually cared about "authenticity", you wouldn't be interested in reading people a list of rules they have to follow in order to fit in with your club.
@@homelander7742Fair but there still need to be some rules in place. A goth club, by definition, is for those that listen to goth music. Ravers dont need to BE in a goth club, there ARE clubs for ravers, Metalheads etc. Its supposed to be a sanctuary away from everyone else, somewhere where you can just be with others that like what you like. How is that any different to private clubs that only admit guys and not girls? And those still exist and no one is complaining about them.
I listen to goth, but i also listen to rap, electro pop, chinese opera, chinese ballads... The truth is as you said, that liking goth doesn't prevent you from listening to other stuff, and if anything, jt can expand your love for music as a whole. There's so much beauty to be found all over the music world that to limit oneself to just one genre, whichever that may be, really prevents you from seeing that beauty in my opinion.
I see people, often babybats, who pretty much ask for PERMISSION to listen to or make music in other genres and like... Music should be something that makes you happy/fullfills you, and if you derive that fullfillment from multiple genres that's a beautiful thing!

In my 40s and although I grew up a "grunge-alt" teen in the 90s, who occasionally hung out with goths, I am now researching more goth music and having fun! Yes, in the 90s we all hung out, grunge, punks, goths., of all backgrounds and ethnicities...the 90s rocked!!
You had me in stitches there. I can't wait for people to move past that meme. It's one of that many things contributing to people being rude. Thankfully a lot of people know better and are respectful or considerate.
It's not 'gatekeeping' to keep bad actors from claiming a subculture, when they only want to abuse and subsume that subculture, rather than learning or contributing positively.
Exactly. If something's being gatekept, We would want them to be as little in the know as possible. Offering up information, advice and resources is the exact opposite of that. You're handing them the keys. They Just don't want to hear it because they want the title without everything else that goes along with it.
If someone doesn't like listening to Sisters of Mercy or whatever, how does that make them a "bad actor"? I think instead of "bad actors" you meant to say something like "people with different preferences than me."
@@homelander7742 I think they mean, keeping out people who aren't goth, have nothing to do with the subculture but actively claim the label whilst behaving poorly, pushing away and confusing new goths and portraying goths in a bad light. When you turn something into a fad, you kill it.
Hi, I 53 and have been a Goth since my teens. My style is influenced from the eighties and the past Im at a age where I don't care what others think No one especially people outside of the culture or trying to sell you the style will tell me I'm wrong. Goth is all things and not limited .Love to you from Australia 🖤
In my probably unpopular opinion, I think not all gatekeeping is bad. You almost need it so a scene doesn't lose it's identity. If you don't do it it can change in to something so different that it loses what made it special to begin with for people. If you think there is "gatekeeping" going on with something, fine, but understand in most cases it's not about trying to be the top dog in something but rather trying to prevent something losing it's identity and becoming just a mash up of everything and nothing special. For instance, the "raver" takeover of goth nights in the '90s here in town.
I became goth became of Freaky Friday because the movie exposed me to all things alternative. Lindsay's character was more of a mall goth or emo but still. 🖤
I’m not personally a goth myself although I do enjoy some of the music. It’s just not my primary genre and I listen to other genres more. I feel very welcome spending time with goths though! I spend a lot of time at my local alternative music club with my friends, some of them very into goth music, and I go to the goth DJ nights there! I love to dance and feel the music even if I’m the only person on the floor but luckily the other goths of ALL ages are usually more than happy to join me and make sure I’m not alone. They don’t mind that I’m only goth for the evening to support my mates! At the end of the day they know my respect for them and their subculture is genuine, and they’ve taken me in honorarily as one of them. Those weirdos on tiktok could learn a thing or two about being respectful and healthily curious rather than fetishising an inaccurate idea of it.
Agreed w what you said at the end, they really could learn a thing or two. And also, as a goth i also honorarily accept you!! I respect so much that you respect us like that and care to learn abt the subculture, even it's issues. You sound so cool n remind me of one of my friends 🖤
I feel like a lot of this has to do with how widespread social media is now. It makes it so easy to spread misinformation, but it's also easy to find actual knowledgeable advice and information on the subculture. Unfortunately, creeps are everywhere and will find ways to capitalize on whatever is popular at the time. It just makes things more difficult for those of whom are part of the subculture or people who want to get into the subculture to spread information or find things that are genuinely informative. Thankfully, we have people like you who try to combat all the bs, and share stories of your experiences, while showing people how to find affordable goth clothing. I've really learned so much from you, and i really think you're a big reason i wanted to become more involved within the subculture, and i thank you for that ❤

The amount of used "goth" fast fashion I've seen on the rack of thrift shops have proven to me that the "trendy people" are finally starting to leaving goth spaces.
I used to say it’s what’s in your headphones, not what’s in your wardrobe which makes you part of the goth subculture, but for some people that’s too much.
Exactly! That was always what it was all about. When we would see other goths out and about in a place you wouldn't expect to see one like in the mall or McDonald's or something, we always tended to gravitate toward one another and the first things that you would ask was What they've been listening to.
Thank you. The MUSIC (media) is number 1. People that think its only fashion, are kind of missing the point. My first few experiences at a goth/industrial night were transformative. I dont really dress like anything anymore. Utilitarian at best. But its always the music.
I feel very much at odds with the direction a lot of discourse has gone in goth spaces online. I think there is a lot of political problems that people are hitching their wagons to. I love the music, I love the many ideas, and that plurality of ideas and concepts and opinions seems to be an issue right now, especially as my own politics have changed as I've grown older and been able to compare and contrast perspectives on various current events. I feel that the continued watering down in a popular social context of "goth" is only going to get worse until people are willing to gatekeep the identity in a more unified manner.
I remember, 1st seeing a Magazine Cover, with How to, Goth Makeup etc... 2nd my then 11 Niece asking me, about the Highschool kids talking to one another, are those "Goth" kids!?. I hate the way goth is portrayed now because when I was younger so many cool, smart, emotionally intelligent people were goth. Now so many people call themselves goth and act a huge mess, given mostof those "goth" ppl were 2020s egirls that went through a phase, but I feel like goth is a costume for people having an edgy moment and want to represent their edginess through a stereotype they have.
When we were younger it wasn't necessarily 'cool' to be goth. It was the kind of thing that made you an outcast, got you bullied or had a be shouted at you in the streets but certainly not something that one fantasized over or coveted. I feel like once social media really took off the way that it did it pit so many different people against each other and they all started fighting for popularity and visibility and they all had to start one up in each other on ways to stand out and suddenly goth became that very persona for them. It gave them that edge to give them cool points.
@@angelabenedict : I agree... if I may stumble into this here🙃... I think I ended up thinking about the goth world rather late, trying to find something about the world of black/goth people online when I came from my relationship with a guy that was into metal while I can't even stand metal, but he must have sparked my dark side again...but I always was leaning into being goth all my life just I did not even know that "goth" existed when I was a teen.. it is only logical through what I did, was reading or even how I dressed sometimes back when I was young but I wasn't allowed to dress the way I wanted so that perspective goes out the door anyway, it was more a mental state probably, but I guess when I would have had the freedom to express myself and had knowledge of the term, I would have gone full goth maybe... idk that these days, cause I am not a teen anymore. Only thing I know is, I did not sit with the more gothy guys in my school either, since they didn't like me and they were very much acting elitist, so also nothing there... I guess it is impressive tho that half the class (of one school I attended, there were more since I was bullied alright on each school), was listening to this new wave/wave stuff, in hindsight that is actually funny. Half my class was an outsider personality,😅 and I was the one that was an outsider come hell or high water to them all, they laughed at me every day.. goth guys and normalies alike. maybe it is also depending on the country and place where one lives, because situations and so on just vary in each country, making being a goth possible or just not even a term. I also think with so many things, America is faster than Europe, and also the UK is faster than Germany with some trends and the music industry, for example, there was MTV and all that but some stuff just did not reach us as fast as it was coming out or playing in the US or UK... and I get goth was not a trend but in the 80's it was more or less a trend, and we either saw it on MTV or we did not have an access to it, hence why they did not call it goth but new wave instead etc... one could also say, we were behind the moon in some aspects compared to the US. And then, it vanished as fast as it showed up, at least on the surface... And I wasn't allowed to go to a club until I was 18, and by that time the peak was over anyways, it was when electric wave started/ended already. I lived like in a convent, it was a horror... so there was maybe something beneath the surface but I couldn't reach it, today I think I must have missed the best of times and a lot of good things... well, one cannot get it back. I was , what that is concerned, in the middle ages (dark ages, lol), but I was like that (goth like) since a child actually. So, it's okay, today I know. and that's enough.
my bad I meant to say in my pov I saw goth people in that light when I was a kid, the goth people I personally knew fit that discription, I was born in 96, and while not goth at the time got bullied constantly just for wearing black and other interests
Came home from the goth club to see this video was uploaded around the time I left. Met someone who told me I reminded them of a bat because of the way I wrap my cape around myself. Good stuff. Why isn’t the 18 to enter 21 to drink thing as common?? That makes so much more sense to me. I don’t even want to drink alcohol. Why should you be barred from entering for fear of you doing something you don’t even want to do?
Yeah, it's pretty bad nowadays. I've only been in the subculture for a few years, I'm slowly learning the music, the fashion, the literature, and so on. But some communities that I have gone into or tried to go to to learn have a bunch of problems or I would sometimes get kicked out for not knowing enough or my age (24), or I would have guys hmu with disgusting messages and such. I just let my mom help me mostly, she was a goth kid in the 80s and she helps me out, especially with music and literature since I don't have much else to help me. I hate how some things have gotten so overly seggualized (censored the word a bit lol), like even being in the Trans community, we have to be careful of people who k!nk people being Trans, and it makes a lot of us uncomfortable. Same with Lolita Fashion from Japan, it has nothing to do with the book and people look at it with a seggualized eye and it scares people, especially the women/femmes.
I love this channel so much... I really appreciate your content 🩷... I'm a baby bat at 32... I'm new to this world and trying to find my place within this sub culture ... Social media makes it seems like there's a strict guideline of rules that must be checked in order to be goth... Its very frustrating because I resonate / identify with a lot but not all... In my heart I know I am connected to this culture but I'm still finding my fit .. you have truly helped me... Thanks ❤
It's nice that people with a more complicated music taste are also welcome in goth. I'm currently reflecting on which subculture is the closest to my heart because I have a pretty weird mixture of fashion, music and other interests
The majority of us do. It's just that goth tends to be the main squeeze among the many different bands or genres we like. For the most part, it's usually quite eclectic.
I have indigenous heritage and roots. My traditional clothes aren't black, but colored. I confess that I don't mind it. Still, I would love to have one that is black, because then I could combine my culture and goth.
I saw that MamieHades stitch on Instagram; I was just like 'Too much? Not at all, dear!' 🤣As a female goth who wasn't exactly born with an A-cup; I dress the part on a daily basis, and I legit get catcalled by these idiots irl whenever I run errands alone, so that stitch legit got a hearty laugh out of me at the time. I was wearing a baggy t-shirt and sweatpants last time it happened; the most goth thing about my look that day was like two layered necklaces and maybe a spooky bracelet and some rings. I'm 30 years old and I probably would've rolled my eyes if it were just some stupid teens (every teenager does some stupid stuff that they'll end up cringing at later, after all), but the scary part is... The dude who made me walk a little faster at the time was my age. Just saying; if these creeps are already freaking out to this degree over a basic black outfit with some Alchemy Gothic jewellery, then they clearly need both a reality check and a chill pill. 🙄 That stitch definitely made me feel better about the regular harassment for a moment; though; having a good laugh at the creep's expense is just comforting to me. Just saying; I'm autistic and have comorbid social anxiety, and both me and my trusted person (my mom) just want me to be able to safely run errands on my own. That godforsaken meme should die already. 🙄
Talking about Goth I will agree with you I mean it's not that hard to get it. Like I said before I think the elitist, gatekeepers, the internet & social media kind of or mostly messed it up for a lot of new people coming up in the scene. That's why we're continuing to get people trying to explain the wrong way about the subculture to others that really don't know what they're talking about. If they listen to genuine people like you & others like us we wouldn't have this problem still today.
@@thiscorrosion3843 no it's not because we should be helping new people coming into the subculture not holding back information like I said to the other person before you the commented something similar
In all honesty, people are probably asking cause there’s a lot of people on TikTok who dress up goth or talk about what true goth is but don’t listen to the music or care about the subculture at all. In all honesty, I’m so sick of sexualization of subculture kind of tired of it. Sex is fine but sex obsession is a real problem right now.
I'm amused-amazed at Young Signorino. I didn't knooooowwww 😂 I hope he's taking it seriously, I've seen he's made a couple of albums now... he was, like, a joke back then, many alternative people here (Italy) really laughed at his old "songs". I was quite surprised myself. I don't remember how I came across his older music, however I know it was a few years back and I didn't quite know what to make of it. I wasn't sure if it was serious or not. I was so surprised when I came across one of his songs not realizing that it was the same person. Total mind blow situation.
It's nice to hear you break it down...your thoughts are enjoyable to listen to. I give you some credit for pushing me to open myself up to the goth music I now love (and become aware that what I liked was goth and didn't ever know) .
I'm definitely more Metal than Goth but I've done my time in London Goth circles to varying degrees over the last two decades. One of my trips to Slimelight was with the old Netgoth lot and Neomix, a black goth was to this day one of the most stylish and nicest people I've met. Black goths are rare but they are very much legit.
Idk if it's worth mentioning, I mean, I am already almost 9 years in the subculture and I feel happy there. But recently (on reddit) many weeks ago.. that I got flamed because of different opinions and political beliefs and got said that I can't be goth because of that.. It still breaks my head because: Since when are Goths a political subculture?? It's a music based subculture but still got outcasted ;-;
Goth music benefits and improves when diverse cultures make contributions. The past 5 or 6 years I've seen so many good Latinx goth bands popping up. REALLY GOOD bands too. The goth scene in Mexico is super hot, plus US-based bands that have Latinx heritage and sing in both English and Spanish. Maybe they aren't all new, but they are more visible now. new-to-me.
When I was exploring and researching what Goth was and was not, your contacts was the first thing I saw. I have seen your Contant years prior, however, that was back when I believed that Goth was bad. Back then was when I unknowingly discovered Requiem in White. I did not know that was Goth music, all I knew was I loved how it sounded. That pony Falls video was a tiny peek into the subculture.
another thing that gets on my nerves is the political gate keeping some people do. only thing I'd say is well Artistic expression is Artistic expression. does not even hafe to be in the Music. Johnny O and Stevie B performed. There is nothing wrong with sneaking a little into your sets. I'd be on that dancefloor in 0.5 seconds.
@angelabenedict I was living in Ft. Myers probably just a few years before you and they had an actual alternative music teen night there called Salad Days. So I totally remember going to those when I was underage. And if a song isn't inherently goth, but fits the vibe, I happily spin it 🤷♂
@@angelabenedict NO WAY! I was actually living in Cape Coral. I moved there from New England in '85. I went to Cape High and Gulf Middle School. But this would have been around '90. I moved to Orlando in '91, but that club was still there until at least '93, if not later.
I think there is certainly a correlation with liking dark themes as a Goth, and this I think is where some people get confused about it being about having a "Gothic Heart". But there are definitely those that can like dark themes and not be gothic or not ever feel inclined to dress gothic. It is for sure a music-based subculture and it's about expressing the things we like including the fashion of it that makes us feel more like ourselves, but our correlating interests aren't always the same and can differ wildly, because we are all different and we all like different things. It is also, like many things, a social construct that we don't need to be holding over other people's heads; but instead embrace those that want to belong somewhere. All of us and especially we who deviate from the norm still need those we can connect with and will accept us afterall.

On your passage about rap: I grew up listening to rap; from Eminem to Necro to even Kendrik Lamar, I still to this day listen to rap in fact I was on a "bender" recently where I was only listening to rap almost exclusively the past 2 weeks.... However once my interested faded I went back to my goth, darkwave and coldwave playlists....
I think the problem is also people want to fit in and feel like they have a community, to have a way to connect with others and if you listen to all kinds of alternative music its easy to get confused and wonder what you can identify with.
In my opinion, there's often a continuity when people choose a style. When I was a kid I started listening to Italian pop music with themes like sadness, lost love, death, poverty etc. When I was 18 I started to dress in black and then listening to Goth music but without stop myself listening to meaningful music out of the Goth genre. Goth are eclectic just like all the other styles, including the regular people (are they called "normies" nowadays?). So, they like different from each other. I never heard about Goth rap but I think it has no future. Anyway, talking about real rap and my passion for meaningful songs, You should listen to the song "2030" by the former Italian rap duo Articolo 31. It talks about a post apocalyptic Italy, and it is a really sad song. In my opinion it is more related with what a Goth is searching for a music then an improbable Goth rap.
The first time walking in to (old) Helter Skelter in LA was a definitive experience...for sure...and Masquerade in Atlanta was great fun ..i love seeing KinderGoths about, and wish there was a revival of Club Scene for them.
Right?! The thing is, you don't just have to get goth, goth has to get you. That's why for some people who do it for cool points and pretend to like the music, don't last. Because the music never got them. That's clearly what happened with him. He got it and it got him. It is a beautiful thing when Goth wins 🤣
@@angelabenedict : what is it like when goth "gets" me? is it like, it gets to me? no, just kidding, I really would like to know what that means. I get it is a word play too here, but really. why does goth have to get me, you mean, goth people? if I don't reach goth people, they won't get me so I won't be goth? 🤔 it seems, a door that does not want to open does not need to be opened. or something like that. so, what gives and who cares. If you goth people are enough already, why teach people about what goth is. It defends the purpose of a culture that wants to be exclusive. Because exclusive usually means "to exclude" people. while for example, pop culture does not act like that, for them anybody is invited (which makes it so boring for goth people who are bored by being surrounded by normies... they bore them and that is the truth, you can also own up to it, anyone of you.)
Yes, I agree with you, it’s funny if people don’t like such videos, they should just turn off a lot of incorrect information about goths on the Internet and it’s great that there are cool TH-cam channels like yours. For many years I didn’t know what kind of music I listen to goths. I listened to metal. I realized that it’s not my thing. and found the goth rock genre and it became my favorite music
6:30 That's too bad due to the fact that just like Anarcho/Crust punk, the Goth/Death Rock scene is usually extremely anti-racist and those who are openly racist or even homophobic gets pushed out of the scene pretty fast.

And i guess i feel kind alone in it? :( and also so annoyed at all these nasty dudes who come up to me, even when i'm w my freaking parents. (theyre awesome n tag along sometimes!) Idk, id love to hear any advice you have to share
There’s literally multiple videos of you and other goth content creators who have been on the scene for a while telling people it’s about the music! That’s it. Who’s telling them there’s more goth requirements besides music?
I used to be a very sexually open person. Hubby and o have been together 13 years. We have tried a lot of things and I used to be safe talking about our escapades with people we know, as long as everyone knows each other’s boundaries line up. Now I can’t. He can, because he is a dude, but if any person overhears me talking to a friend about some things we do, even if it’s presented like a joke, some fucking dude seemingly crawls out of the woodworks to be creepy. As far as the music goes, just listen to the music. The style is secondary. Alt subcultures are less about fashion and more about self expression so there is no right or wrong with clothing. People approach it with a mainstream mentality of ‘I have to have the best brands and cutest outfit, and be the hottest one in the room.’ Most of us dove into subcultures because we hated that. I have always had a wide range of tastes. Ngl, I went on a spice girls rampage yesterday. But my main go-to have always been darker alt genres, and the go-to has changed throughout my life. I’ve been on a heavier industrial kick for the last year. But I listen to a lot of shit. You don’t have to only like one genre. That is boring. You don’t have to dress goth. You can enjoy rap. I love some old school rap artists, but I don’t have to throw the label of ‘goth’ on them to make it make sense. Lots of old school rappers have some very dark lyrics that appeal to fans of heavier and darker genres. As far as what subculture I’m in, I don’t really know or care now because I have heard ‘you aren’t welcome’ from all at one point or another… but I kept showing up at shows with my few friends. It was already hard for women, especially if you aren’t attractive, to fit in with subcultures. No matter how much you move the music, you get called a poser, and cringy, while some much more attractive girl who just got into 3 songs thanks to her bf is welcomed with open arms (though usually it’s to harass her the moment she is since or he isn’t around). Now I feel as for other girls who don’t look anything like the Instagram and tiktok ‘goth influencers’ because these youngsters (and some people much older than me) have no trouble saying the quiet part out loud now. They would say it to me back in the early 00s, but it was a last resort. Thankfully I don’t see many people like the new social media representations online, at shows and events very often. They last 5 minutes when they show up and realize that no, the bartender doesn’t want to stop working to be in their live stream, and no, the DJ won’t put in lil peep.
Well when I encountered Goth I saw different variations I don’t know if it still there anymore. So I encountered Goth, Seen, Punk, Emo, and I forget the other one 🤷🏽♂️. They always tended to be very nice people though when I encountered them
It wasn't just the 80s, it was the 60s too. I read in Michael Jackson's book he witnessed, heard and even smelled people throwing up in a club that he and his brothers played at when they were children. My mom read the part of the book too and was grossed out. When I told my mom what you said about the punk dude my mom brought up that part of Michael's book again. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
That question you asked, a guy named F.D. Signafier (spelling) made a video around that question you asked (The good and bad about slim shady). On one had part of the reason is due to the fact that a lot of music exces and black old heads saw money potential in some of these white artists and brought them to the hip hop and rap scene. Almost like Vanilla Ice in a way. Once they don't make the money or the fame anymore, they get ditched or the artist move onto something else. Then on the other hand, anybody can be a low-vibrational, mediocre rap artist these days. He probably thought he could be really famous overnight and when that didn't happend (or whatever), he switched over to goth (which he's good at). At lot of people who tried the rap thing as a get rich/famous quick normally don't last long.
Can you do a video on Teen Clubs or Teen Night Clubs? I use to be huge on Teen Night Clubs but GenZ wants to argue that I'm a pedo for bring it back in 2024 which logically makes no sense.

Speaking of Goth Rap. I am appalled at the new Crow trailer and I feel like not gatekeeping enough is EXACTLY why it's so awful to begin with
I refused to watch it today when I was tagged in it. I don't know if I can handle that level of frustration. When I see something that impacted me in some way positively or has embedded itself in my formative memories bastardized, it invokes the rage.

Gatekeeping is good.
I honestly never heard the term gatekeeper used until I started making goth content. It's baffling that you have a group of people who when you, as you said essentially spoon and feed them information - they gasp and horror and call you a gatekeeper. Surely you're handing them the keys to the gate.
People are really thinking that not wanting to be catcalled is gatekeeping. We are in a bad place.
It's insane, isn't it? "You're making me feel uncomfortable and unsafe' Stop gatekeeping MEEEE!
Literally
Me as a black goth guy since the early 2000s: I hope he takes the time to study the subculture instead of just looking at tiktok. I love my Darkwave and I never cared what anyone thought, still don't. I see more of us black and POC folks in the scene. I myself am learning how to create Darkwave.🖤
That's good to hear. The feeling of not being accepted is terrible on its own but feeling it down to your DNA is so definitive. It sucks that people walk around feeling like that.
@@angelabenedictI hope they can find the courage to go to a Goth Night. I love the scene so much.🖤🖤
"You can't be goth if you're black." Its really surprising that this myth just refuses to die, especially with how many black men I know that are a prominent part of my local goth community. Hell, one of the bigger goth clubs is owned by a black couple.
It's really a ridiculous notion. All they would need to do is attend one goth event, just one and that would put that lie to bed.

The sign about Goth being about architecture reminds me of a quote by Laurie Anderson: "Writing about music is like dancing about architecture.".
I love that! I wish I'd have heard that quote before I made this video lol
Laurie Anderson has said that it was Steve Martin who made it, and Elvis Costello (who has also been attributed as the author) believes it was Martin Mull. There's an article from 1979 that says it's Martin Mull, so it probably was him.
But some of my favorite dances are about architecture 😢

I used to be really against gatekeeping, especially in the Black Metal community. I didn't like that elitist mindset. But now seeing what's happening to Goth, I'm thinking "You know what, maybe some gatekeeping is a good thing"
Depends if you are doing it to keep the scene authenic rather than chasing away the newbies that are curious and want to join.
Gatekeeping needs to happen more often.

Gatekeeping is always a good thing.

Gatekeeping is a good thing.
"Too much?" followed by "As one would" is perfect 😂 also your makeup is EVERYTHING
Hahahaha 😂
In my probably unpopular opinion, I think not all gatekeeping is bad. You almost need it so a scene doesn't lose it's identity. If you don't do it it can change in to something so different that it loses what made it special to begin with for people. If you think there is "gatekeeping" going on with something, fine, but understand in most cases it's not about trying to be the top dog in something but rather trying to prevent something losing it's identity and becoming just a mash up of everything and nothing special.
For instance, the "raver" takeover of goth nights in the '90s here in town.
Gatekeeping is necessary.

Did you finish the 4000 word essay on The Crow? I didn't have my Goth initiation until I turned it in with the elders.
They changed it to 4000 now?!
Welcome home.
I've really learned so much from you, and i really think you're a big reason i wanted to become more involved within the subculture, and i thank you for that ❤

leaving goth spaces.

@@angelabenedicthave you been to the south?? It's still this way here. Not everywhere in the US is accepting.

That would be so friggen beautiful. I hope you get to do that. ❤️
Excited to hear your take on this one 💜
Hey, Chris! Thank you!
Nope. Gatekeeping is absolutely necessary. The lack of gatekeeping is why people don't even know that Goth is a music based subculture.
Gatekeeping is a good thing.
@@Anonymous-wb3nz not really because we should be helping new people coming in a subculture not holding back information

It's amazing how much he's changed, that's unbelievable and quite shocking, and cool too?! Wow thanks Angela for letting us know, and for your helpful, fun, profound, thought-provoking reflections 🖤🦇

Black goths are rare but they are very much legit.
memories are nothing, meaning which is connection is everything.
Idk if it's worth mentioning,
I mean, I am already almost 9 years in the subculture and I feel happy there.
But recently (on reddit) many weeks ago.. that I got flamed because of different opinions and political beliefs and got said that I can't be goth because of that..
It still breaks my head because: Since when are Goths a political subculture?? It's a music based subculture but still got outcasted ;-;
Those aren't Goths then.
Goth is not political. It's music, period. Those people are posers.
@@IndigoRaven-zx8hp thanks for agreeing btw :)
Maybe they aren't all new, but they are more visible now. new-to-me.
I’ve only been listening to spanish goth for the past few months !! it’s so good !!!

another thing that gets on my nerves is the political gate keeping some people do. only thing I'd say is well Artistic expression is Artistic expression. does not even hafe to be in the Music.
I like a lot of Music much more now days. back in High School I got more Into Punk & Industrial before high school its Metal Alternative & Hip hop. I always liked Dark aligned music. getting more into Punk & Industrial then I found London after Midnight & Voltaire. been on the goth Music Journey since the 2000's. as for the purist's I don't pay them no mind. those people limit themselves to much. good to still hear your youth adventure's. take care good video as always Angela. 😎

Yes!!! I love them so much. There was this club in Naples when I lived in Florida called either Sparks or Sparklers. It was Freestyle and they had so many bands play there.

I had a few coworkers try to prove that the subculture isn't real and have used the Gothic Architecture attack. Yes! I remember "The Bank" on Houston St. I used to go to QXT in Newark, Shampoo (Wednesday nights were Goth nights) in Philadelphia, PA, Shadowland also in Philadelphia. Sometimes i'd go to an event straight from work wearing a dress shirt and tie (I worked for the State of NJ at that time). I had travelled to Leipzig, DE to attend WGT. It's all about the music and people. Now I'm in Japan (accepting a job here) I'm more focused on martial arts & weightlifting. I'm in the Northern Japan countryside surrounded by rice patties. I'll attend a dark dance event if it is happening during my travels. Since covid many of the events in Tokyo (9 hours drive) and Osaka (16 hours drive) are few and far in between. I miss going to Dracula's Ball in Philadelphia. I'm glad that's still happening. Great video! Sending you a kuji of love from the Tohoku region.

The first time walking in to (old) Helter Skelter in LA was a definitive experience...for sure...and Masquerade in Atlanta was great fun ..i love seeing KinderGoths about, and wish there was a revival of Club Scene for them.
how did that mumble rap-crud become a goth!?!?!?!? the ugly caterpillar became a beautiful butterfly
Right?! The thing is, you don't just have to get goth, goth has to get you. That's why for some people who do it for cool points and pretend to like the music, don't last. Because the music never got them. That's clearly what happened with him. He got it and it got him. It is a beautiful thing when Goth wins 🤣
I love that, it's awesome to see.
