    Andy Nicholson I believe he did a few videos in the 80's /early 90's on worming and shrimping for salmon in northern English rivers

    I catch all my salmon seatrout and brownies on this method and I always work the ball weight up stream and that always works better!

    Great video, for those that still have a lot to learn about not just catching fish in this case salmon but how to unhook salmon if hook is swallowed. Debarb barb on hook gape, i use allcock single hooks, the barbs up the shank will stop your worms from sliding off. Now to those who do know how to unhook deeply hooked salmon, easy buy a pair of 8 inch forceps. Cutting the line is cruel and not needed, if hook comes loose (think about it). Unhook time with 8 inch forceps takes less than a few seconds to do. Remember no flies in the sea, (think about it), last food items a salmon has seen is sandeels, fish, shrimps, praws etc etc. I have changed all my spinners from treble hook to a single strong hook even on my mepp spinners, tried and tested, all fish landed and returned. If in the rules it is up to the angler if he takes a fish home or not. Remember to the purists that to make a fly an animal or bird has to be killed or slaughtered to tie your fly, me i use all methods in our club strict rules, and yes salmon do feed, honestly. Taught by old school anglers, thanks guys. Well done Simon, nicely done.

    ........ and this is why worm fishing for salmon is banned outright on many waters: the salmon swallow the hook very deep and are often damaged, removing it. It is a highly effective and indeed very skilled technique, but nine times out of ten, you find yourself playing the fish by its guts.

      Worm fishing is still permitted on many irish rivers. Its a highly effective natural method but as you say the problem is when the salmon swallow it. I haven't used that method in years since I picked up the fly rod. I use to hook alot in the mouth by striking after feeling two taps on the line while worming. 99% of the time I'd hook them in the mouth.

    • @peterwalls308
      @peterwalls308 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not a fan of worming but in general if its deep hooked you cut the line and back it goes forget about trying to remove the hook.

    • @AlwaysOneMore
      @AlwaysOneMore 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That fish was only deep hooked because he allowed it to be. Strike a second or two after the take and it’s never out the mouth

      Circle hooks prevent deep hooking, but they take a lot of getting used to

    Hi Simon. Do you have any more on this series featuring this angler? A long time ago, I remember having quite a long video of him and his side kick fishing through Ireland using many different methods.
    Great memories. Thanks for sharing.

    Brilliant vid, anything on upstream worm for salmon?

    • @jerryoconnor-ps8bb
      @jerryoconnor-ps8bb 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I've been fishing for 50years + and I am still learning. But in my experience upstream is the best method. This guy caught a small salmon but I am sure that he looses more than he lands. His landing net should not be over his shoulder, on the ground ready to go. Bail arm should (must) be open because a salmon runs with the worms, 99% of the time he'll run upstream. You let the line run of your finger so that the salmon doesn't feel resistance. His drag was set too light and the reel was locked. Better to set the drag right and play the fish by back winding. But to each their own.

    Clay worms are best for salmon brambles are best for sea trout first light in morning but they do if there are no chocolate heads or clay to fish

    • @Ronny.81
      @Ronny.81 ปีที่แล้ว

      When their coming into spawning I'd say everything in their vicinity annoys them ,hence the reason I believe they attack the bait.

  • @martin7955

    Damaged fish take easier , also this fish might died anyway with that injury before spawning

    • @GoneFishingNow
      @GoneFishingNow  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Why do you think injured fish are more eager to take Martin? I caught one years ago on the fly on my second cast at rough hole on the Bandon, it seemed eager alright.

      Filmed in a time when the rivers had alot more salmon and the norm was to bring a fish back home to the family. I hope that settles your quarry with the keeper comment.
