- Kolkata, often referred to as the "City of Joy," is a vibrant and culturally rich metropolis in eastern India. This unique city has been one of the most incredible and vibrant cities I have visited this year.
The city has a fascinating blend of history and modernity. It was the capital of British India until 1911, and remnants of its colonial past are still visible in its architecture. The city's colonial history, vibrant colors, yellow taxis, chaotic bazaars, and hospitality of Kolkata people make it a city that leaves a lasting impression on anyone who visits.

He hasn't though has he. He's basically only gone to tourist parts of cities so you just see vendors. Doesn't represent general India at all. The heart of India is in it's villages, where 65% of the people live. You can only experience it if you travel at that level and he hasn't. So much of what India is about is the traditions, the domestic/family life, festivals etc and this will all be present in villages. He has not shown any of this in his videos.

Oberoi Group is one of the leading hotel groups privately owned by an Indian family founded in the late 1930’s. A good friend who has Indian heritage introduced us to the hotel group some years ago and it is now a must wherever we travel in Asia and they have a hotel !

Yes, Tony. They're the best. They have had multiple international awards over the decades, and they are considered 'the best' in India despite larger Indian hotel groups existing. If you work in their properties... you can get placed anywhere in the entire globe - that's how high their standards are. They have their own hotel management program and it's highly regarded.
P.S. They dared to shut down their New Delhi flagship hotel for a 'two-year' period for a US$ 85 Million renovation... and it still had no impact on their business continuity.
Chitra at the hotel oberoi is a great ambassador for this site. She paid so much attention making eye contact. So knowledgeable about the hotel and its facilities. She was very eloquent. Unlike the bloke at reception desk, seemed pre occupied, 🙄. Staff are the most important investment in hospitality. Thanks Davuud 🎉😊
They’re just doing their job….what’s wrong with that….Chitra’s job is with the hospitality…..whilst the desk people are business…..they were friendly not rude…..❤️🇺🇸
Oberoi around the world is very nice hotel…..
Chitra seems to be trained well. Not many employees have such good product knowledge. The reception guy needs to learn how to respond and engage with a guest. When asked about the hotel he was very hesitant to say that it is indeed the best hotel irrespective of whether it is or not
@@vijoyabraham6328 well, 1 may think it as hesitant, some1 else may think it as polite and understated sophistication. who claims 1 is the best other than some brash cheap entity.

I have been subscribed to the channel for almost a year and I am amazed by the diversity, where you shave on the street and then stay in a luxury hotel, this gives us a total immersion of the country you are visiting, thank you for providing us this fantastic experience. P.S. I saw in the video that the Zara sneakers are still usable, which proves that the man who repaired them did a good job.
The classic colonial style Grand experience with modern amenities. I used to visit in the 90s. Grand used to be the epitome of luxury in my childhood in 60s to 80s. Iconic and old traditional.

According to my wife (she is Russian), Oberoi Grand in Calcutta is the best hotel in India. We stayed in Lila Chain of hotels, Sheraton, Maurya, Asoke Hotels and ITDC hotels over many years but nothing is comparable to this hotel.
How does Oberoi compare with Taj?

Oberoi Grand in Calcutta is the best hotel in India according to my wife as we stayed in almost all 5 star hotels in India ( in New Delhi, Agra, Calcutta, Kerala, Bombay etc)
Hello Davud: nice video and a quick question: how did you manage a 10,000 rupee deal at the Oberoi? I assume this is recent? They are routinely charging 15,000 rupees + taxes or more at the moment. I am asking because I'm heading to Kolkata again (after 4 years) and would love to stay at the Oberoi Grand again, at around 10,000 rupees...

Oberoi is a Luxury hotel chain that owns 35 luxury hotels in India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Mauritius, Australia, and Hungary, the Oberoi group became India's second-largest hotel company, after the Taj group, which belongs to the Tata conglomerate. Mohan Singh Oberoi was born in modern-day Pakistan. As a young man, he had scandalized his Sikh family by shaving off his beard. In 1957, when he opened the Oberoi International in New Delhi, he brought in chambermaids with vacuum cleaners to replace the five or six male servants who usually served an Indian hotel room. In 1937, he took over Calcutta's once-elegant Grand Hotel, which had been closed for five years by fears of cholera in its water supply. Borrowing against his Simla property, he began a renovation program and eventually persuaded the first guest to move in, guaranteeing him soda water to drink and food cooked outside the hotel.
The outbreak of World War II was a turning point in Mr. Oberoi's career. He prevented the British army from requisitioning the Grand by offering to reserve it for officers and feed them cheaply, though charging extra for women who spent the night.
