If every person on Earth all of a sudden became an atheist it wouldn't change a thing . And every single person on the face of the Earth became a Christian it still wouldn't change a thing.
I think it is a rather silly question when posed as an either-or proposition. Turek kind of hijacked the question posed by the student (based on what I saw here). I do appreciate his comment about this not proving one over the other. Of course religion is not THE cause of war. It is usually a secondary factor, often one of several propaganda tools used to create support and appetite for war. Economic and political dominance, economic desperation, contested land boundaries, resources, and revenge are primary. Religion quite often is a roadblock to resolving disputes. For example, Israel thinks the Hebrew Bible gives them historical/ancestral rights to their land. On the flip side, organized religion has rarely objected to war or stopped a war. There have been noteworthy objectors like Bonhoeffer, the Berrigan brothers etc but they were acting as individuals of conscience despite the formal stance (or lack thereof) of their church.
"People, not religion, are the true cause of war. War happens because individuals or groups make the choice to fight, often driven by desires for money, power, or control over resources. Religion may sometimes be cited as a reason, but at the core, it's people's decisions and actions that lead to conflict. Ultimately, war is a result of human choices, not just beliefs."
I just found your channel today. Thank you for this very balanced analysis.
