You completely mischaracterized what Dawkins and Wise said. Dawkins’ point was that Wise had said “… if ALL the evidence in the universe pointed to an old earth” he would still follow the scripture, and you changed that to ... he would “be more patient to see if all the scientific evidence could support a young earth”. That misses in entirety what was said by both people. His point was to show that Wise takes an extreme view and will follow what the scripture says even if every single piece of evidence "IN THE UNIVERSE" shows it to be wrong. You can't critique someone by mischaracterizing what they say. Dawkins is not 'calling him names', he's pointing out what is arguably one of the most illogical and dangerous of all ideas, to simply ignore all the evidence because it's what you want to do.

So his "Big Fact" actually makes more sense with creation - it makes sense to re-use the building blocks of life everywhere. His biggest idiot is also himself as he has previously stated that if God appeared tomorrow in the Sky or whatever, he is so certain of his evolution that he would think it a trick. Dawkins main failing is not understanding basic maths: Dawkins is saying we've got an "astronomically long amount of time" for chance to create and adapt life. But "astronomically" large numbers are way too small: To pick just 14 numbered balls out of 28 takes 3.5 X 10^18 tries. The universe is only 4.35 X 10^17 seconds old !

No, no... do not try to confuse the issues. You say that millions of people around the world believe in god in some form. Then please say: If there is a real god somewhere, why are there those variations? Why there is no uniformity forced on mankind by god? Why give a chance to the beliefs of old Sumerians, then Egyptians and finally Israelis that linked stories about the so-called one god miracle creation? Here, there is no need to sit on both sides of the fence.

A couple more things. Dawkins is not against teaching religion he's for comparative religious studies and thinks you can't understand literature unless you have read the bible. But he doesn't want it taught in science classes. Trouble with mixing science and religion is if your religion is dogmatic about some aspect that nature shows is not so then you have a conflict. Dawkins only ever got involved in religious stuff because evolution teaching was under threat. And it was a geologist he was referring to not a biologist. As a geologist they literally have to use dating to find oil supplies etc. you can't do the job without using the fossil record and rock dating. So he was particularly aggrieved not because the guy was religious but because he believed in a young earth while working in a field in which this belief would literally stop him doing the job.

You would never change a creationists mind if they are prepared to believe a creation story in the Bible which cannot be verified but not believe scientific research like evolution and the age of the earth which looks at evidence by researching fossils, animals, rocks ,and various other methods. I think very much like you, I'm also neither Christian nor Jew. I dismissed Christianity as a teen, it is a man made religion based on a perverted/distorted view of Judaism. The whole concept of a Messiah comes from the teachings of the Hebrew Bible, and it doesn't mention the Messiah being God in the flesh or divine in any way. Nor does it say that the Messiah will be born from a virgin do miracles or forgive sins..... One thing that is admirable about Judaism is that it doesn't condemn those that reject being Jewish (unlike Christians and Muslims). It only says all of mankind should follow the "7 laws of Noah" to be a righteous human being. And there is no teaching of eternity in Hell for those that reject it.

Jesus emphasized that we obey His commands in Jn 3:36. Also, "Not everyone who says to me Lord, Lord," will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. So Christianity in it's fullest form is Catholicism. which is also the fulfillment of Judaism. is also a works-based religion as well. Ben does not know Catholicism otherwise he'd be Catholic.

If you confess Jesus as your Lord you are obliged to act as He said to act. It is not about salvation it is all about gratitude. Paul talks about building your life with gold, silver, wood, hay, and stubble. If you build with the last three you will be saved but have nothing to show for it but you. The entire Torah speaks about sacrificing for the atonement of sin. Moses required every Hebrew to slay a lamb without blemish or their doorpost so that death would pass over them. The slaying of animals were many times sacrifices for sin but also a way to worship God. Even Abraham was asked to sacrifice his on son until God stopped his telling him that He had a substitute. Jesus says the entire Torah is about Him.

I think this is more of an american problem that the meaning of the word "atheist" shifted a bit to a militant, more like anti-theist, but ultimately it's a matter of definitions. I can't help but question if Neil isn't making the same mistake he described at the beginning, by adding unnecessary baggage to the word "atheist", that you have to join a club and engage in debates about atheism. Personally i view atheist and agnostic as the same thing, someone who doesn't believe God exists. Saying that you're agnostic because you're open to change your mind if evidence presents itself casts judgement on atheists, implying that they wouldn't do the same.
