I hope this chat can be valuable to other Resellers the same way it has helped you and your business when you got back home. You are doing an awesome job and have made huge improvements already.

Running an ebay business is tough, but if I can do it anyone can. I drive an 18 wheel truck out for 3 weeks at a time. On my hometime I juggle being a good husband and grandfather along with taking enough pictures, bag and tag, to last 3 weeks until I come home again. It's rough driving 10 hours a day then trying to post 5-10 items a day. I'm hoping to be as successful as you Technsports and Mel! Ya'll inspire me to carry on!!!!

I also drive a truck and help my gf run the eBay business, the great thing about being a truck driver you get to source all over the country while waiting to pick up or deliver a load… when my gf comes out for a week with me (we put store in vacation then) we are able to create our drafts without pictures until we get back… she runs the day to day operations and I help where I can! I hope to some day get off the road but we haven’t figured out how to get our daily sales up, from these videos we figured we just need to buy less items and better sell through rates, but we are content on sitting on items with our huge basement, but shooting for better sell through rates moving forward.

Thank you Mel and Tech for sharing with us. The secret to Tech's success is obvious and it is a challenge to apply it to our work and life in general. I realise how haphazard my own approach to reselling has been - now I have a clearcut method to follow. Seeing you sitting there Mel, so humble in admitting your own weaknesses, really touched my heart. After all you have been through this past year, please be kind and gentle with yourself.

Tech hit it right on the head saying your inventory needs to at least meet your sales goal. I struggled with this when I first started. I'm part time and I wanted to do $2000-$3000 a month but one time I checked and my closet value was a little over $4000. That means I would have had to sell HALF of my inventory each month, completely unrealistic. Now I'm more mindful of the items I pick up, even if that means leaving "good" stuff behind that's not gonna sell for much or quickly. Great video and insight from both of you!

    • @backfromburnout

I have always been an over-sharer lol But honestly, it makes me so happy when I share my personal struggles and then it helps someone else who feels the same way. That makes it all worthwhile. We’re all in this together. None of us should ever feel embarrassed for struggling at times. Reselling is hard. Life is hard. And there are so many people who want to help if we would all just be brave enough to ask for it sometimes. 🩷

Many resellers will know what the trouble is. The addiction of sourcing and accepting free stuff, the hoarding obsession, that’s what needs to be addressed. This is such a great video the difficulty is to stop buying stuff and see eBaying as selling stuff that makes a profit or get rid of it. Brilliant. No mess, no clutter. Will it still be an enjoyable employment if you live by strict rules. There’s a lot to consider. Small amount of stock and you won’t need a warehouse and you will save two hours commute if you work out of a small space nearer home or at home. Looking forward to seeing your business flourish even more. Thanks for this video. Wonderful advice.

A book reseller I know in California used to do high volume books in ebay and Amazon. He had no interest in unscanable or low profit books. He didn't have an easy way to sell them by the palette. He would advertise a warehouse sale for a few weekends each year and sell a few hundred books each time for $1 each from all that excess that didn't meet his model.

Thanks for sharing and being vulnerable to help others. I think that a HUGE trap that resellers get caught up in is "free". We always have to remember there is no free, they all have a time cost and space cost. The amount of work spent listing something that will sell for 5 dollars in 6 months is the same amount as something that will sell for 40 in a week. Really great info (no shock there) we just have to be sure that when free comes to us we do not see it as "extra money" unless it really is.

This was really good and informative Mel. I got a lot of take aways from this one, but one in particular that makes so much sense is to have items sorted and waiting in queue! I'm sort of like you in that I will go ahead and list what I know well, and toss aside time consuming items to "look up later" which of course translates to death pile!
I have bins and bins of unlisted items and I'll often open a bin and cherry pick from it and move on to another bin of *fun/easy stuff*
Not sure if I caught the message right, but I think I will grab a bin a day and just list it all no matter how long it takes and from there I will most definitely change my model to "I know I can make at least $20, therefore worth purchasing" and for the most part, skip the bread and butter time consuming stuff. Fantastic video Mel!

@@TheBrandonn I strive to be you! In my case, I used to live in a much larger home and I had my basement set up to list like a well oiled machine. Problem is I downsized into a mobile home. I have no regrets about that, but now space is an issue with the prior inventory I had not lining up in neat little rows. I clearly need to get a grip and figure out work spaces that I don't have to tear down every single day! I don't need to source for quite awhile, and while I miss it tremendously, I need to get a hold on the mess I've gotten myself into! 😬

OMG this is amazing! I've only been taking the reselling (books) seriously a month or so as I work full time elsewhere but need a secondary source of income (though it'd be amazing if this becomes the main!) and this is such a great video! I'm working out of a small apartment so I really do need to be very careful about what I choose but I didn't know where to start. I've had a great time this last week culling "dead" inventory. I listened to the last video with Common Ground Finds where he mentioned about "monetising duds" and I really took that to heart. I'm getting customers who are thrilled about a great bargain in a large bundle but I'm getting a small amount of ££ to put towards better quality items. My shelves are looking much tidier and I'm much more excited about the things I'm picking up and working with. Having a plan as I move forwards is so helpful. Thank you both!!

I tend to get emotional when buying…. Oh That’s so cute or I remember that from when I was a kid, then it sells for very little or I break even. I love books too and like to buy sets or series that take up too much space with little profit. Don’t beat yourself up, it’s a learning process for all of us. Heck. The other day I bought some vintage Sesame Street Halloween party invitations, why because vintage is in and they sparked a feeling, I will be lucky to break even. I’m part way through and can definitely identify with many of your struggles. Thx you for being vulnerable and sharing. From a third party perspective it sounds like the free books are costing too much of your time, sanity, and causing overwhelm, and guilt. If it were me I would do a no source month, get through those, and then cut that part out of my business. Or I would just not go through them and sell them in bulk.
    Or last option, hire temp
help to get rid of them. You don’t enjoy that part of the business and even though it is”free” there is a “cost” that you don’t like paying.

I think the biggest issue is -- where is Mel going to find enough better items? If I could find enough good items, I wouldn't deal with the $10 or $5 items, but those also sell really quickly and help me out when I'm in a bind. Worse, when you find good items now, people don't have money. So, I either have to take too much less, or the item just doesn't sell. That being said, not everyone is struggling right now. Some people like Cayley and Nikki are killing it, but I've never seen any of those items where I live. I think, in time, we'll all find our way.

I have helped liquidate many estates and I find individuals who are willing to come to me to pick up the items.
Will the library pick up your unwanted items regularly? This could also be a tax deduction for you.
As Tech mentioned someone who will buy in bulk regularly?
Some Resellers specialize in older books and perhaps that could be an outlet to keep the inventory moving consistently.

From what I’ve experienced over the past several months it appears to me that many resellers have some form of attention deficit disorder including myself. It’s HARD to sit and concentrate on one task for long periods but that’s exactly what’s needed. I watched you’re body language and how you kept twisting yourself into a pretzel- you knew what he was talking about fit you exactly. I squirmed too believe me. But this has helped me immensely and I’m going to do what Tech says. I think it’s the only way to make a functioning business and not go crazy in the process! Thank you again Mel!
