Are TRP DHR Evo brakes TOO STRONG? Shuttle Day testing TRP vs Hope / 12/11/23

  • After having TRP DHR Evo's on 4 of my bikes I finally decided to put them on my Yeti which has Hope E4 brakes. The Hopes are great brakes, I loved them and had them on 3 of my bikes. However after riding my other bikes with the TRP's I was really feeling the difference. The Hopes are strong and have amazing modulation but the TRP are much stronger. I can really tell the difference on the long descents or really steep sections. There have been a few times where my Hopes were losing strength and I had to start 2 finger braking. This has not happened even once on the TRP's.
    The TRP are great but they arent perfect. I do feel that the Hope has better modulation. The TRP are really strong and sometimes I actually felt that they are too strong? There were a few times where the brakes locked out and I lost traction. I previously had 200 front and 180 rear with the Hopes. I upgraded to 200/200 with TRP. This is the same set up that I have on my Timp and always felt perfect, there were times it was a little too much on the Yeti especially the rear. There were several times where my rear wheel locked out and I fish tailed. This is something I need to get used to, if I pull the TRP the same way I pull the Hopes its too much, I just need to get used to the TRP and remind myself how much stronger they are.

    Those last 2 trails are total insanity. Amazing. After 2 yrs on SRAM Code RSC's, I upgraded to the coveted TRP's and am blown away! I was sick and tired of squeezing the ever loving shit out of those SRAM's and it always sounded like they were constantly shredding, scraping and screeching. These TRP's are the exact opposite; extremely powerful, super quiet and so much less arm/hand fatigue. Just beautiful...

      Yes the SRAM are great when they work but when you start going down the really steep and long descents is where they start to lose power big time

    Something that definitely helped me when I went from totally shot code R's to much more responsive and stronger MT5s was bringing the lever in. I run them pretty close to the bar and it makes it a lot harder to lock up the tires.

    Adding the TRP’s to my Capra. Excited for the upgrade. Are you familiar with MTX brake pads (company out of Utah)? Dude they are a must have! You don’t have to bed them in. Super strong. I took them down Kong and many other steep trails. I’m an addict for powerful and strong brakes. Get the ‘gold’ backing MTX and you’ll never buy another pad I promise. Cheers

    I had the exact same issue on my Sender, I have Saints with metallic pads and would completely stop the bike and make me lose control. With lighter bikes use a ceramic or resin compound to lessen the bite. I used the MTX red and its been way smoother and modulates with plenty of power.

    • @TommyHuynh
      @TommyHuynh  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yeah I think the change of a stronger brake with a bigger rotor really made a big difference so I just need to adjust how I'm braking now that it's so much stronger than the Hopes

    I think you should have tried the V4 calipers. The pistons are larger (911mm ^2 vs 804mm^2) compared to the E4. Anyway, TRP DHR EVOs are great! Having the same cockpit setup between bikes is quite important IMO.

    • @TommyHuynh
      @TommyHuynh  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I actually had the V4. They were on my Intense Tracer. The TRP are stronger and never ever fade

    • @rezenclowd3
      @rezenclowd3 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@TommyHuynh Interesting, as the V4 pads are larger more larger coefficient of friction, and the 4x16mm pistons is the same as the Hope E4. When you do the math for lever length, length and center point for lever to master, master size, slave size and pad size from greatest to least would be Hayes Dominion by very very small margin, Hope Tech4 V4, TRP DHR evo, Hope Tech 4 E4...

  • @taol8258
    @taol8258 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    At the end of the day it all comes down to the brake pad material. If you're feeling fade you can always run a pad designed for more heat.

    • @TommyHuynh
      @TommyHuynh  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yes brake pads do make some difference but the most important factor will be the brake, you are not going to make bad brakes great by changing pads especially if you are riding steep trails.

      @@TommyHuynh I disagree, pad material trumps all the marketing fuckery these brands are trying to sell to you. You can make great brakes bad too if you pick the wrong pad material.

    • @TommyHuynh
      @TommyHuynh  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @taol8258 ok well I've ridden a bunch of brakes and it's not marketing it's real life experience, you can't make shit brakes good by changing the pads they might be a little better but they are still weak. If you don't ever feel like your brakes are not strong enough than that's good you don't need stronger brakes but for people who ride steep and gnarly trails good strong brakes are a must
