Among the Sonic community, it’s widely considered that Black Knight is one of the most beloved stories in the franchise almost solely for its perfect portrayal of Sonic’s character.
@@Cade_Squirrel I mean, it's not like 4kids translated/localized the game themselves. All they brought to the table were their actors, voice directors (who worked in tandem with the game's Japanese clients), and audio engineers.
The chili dogs say a lot about Sonic. Extremely calorific (he needs those cals), two unhealthy meals in one (unsupervised kid), a party food (everything's a party to him), and there's two of them (wants to share what he likes with others). All hints for later.
Maybe one of those two was for Amy. Thanks to what we hear in the credits we know that he had a date with her... I hadn't thought about it until now and I don't know why
I love how when being teleported away, Sonic wasn't upset about backing out of the fight or the bad guy being left alone but rather the fact his chili dog was ruined.
Ok so to answer some questions. This game is an isekai, its the last game written by Shiro Maekawa. He is the writer who set the foundation for Sonic stories starting with Sonic Adventure in 1998. His writing was very inspired by anime and JRPGs so you’ll come to know that Sonic is a very Japanese action heavy franchise contrary to what the general perception is which is born from quality control issues and the harsh xenophobia towards Japanese mediums that this era of Sonic was most prevalent which is why for the last 14 years or so, Sonic has been made more comedic, westernized and softer narratively. As for the setting, this is an alternate universe set within the world of Camelot from the story of King Arthur where Sonic summoned to from the main universe. The Black Knight is “King Arthur”, heavy on the quotations for reasons I won’t spoil for you. Shadow, Knuckles and the character you don’t know, her name is Blaze. She debuted from Sonic Rush and she is Sonic’s counterpart from the Sol Dimension. Those three make up the Knights Of The Round Table. Shadow is Sir Lancelot, Knuckles is Sir Gawain and Blaze is Sir Percival. This game is universally praised as the greatest story in Sonic period due to not only being the game where Maekawa lets loose as his final contribution to the franchise but it’s also a character study on Sonic as a static character and his philosophy and idealism about freedom and heroism which Sonic isn’t necessarily a hero, he almost teeters on the boundaries of being an anti hero. He does what he believes is right from himself and not for any sense of lawful goodness, he doesn’t even like to be called or viewed as a hero. And it being paired with the voice of Jason Griffith who perfected his voice for Sonic by this point and is effectively the Kevin Conroy of Sonic by now. You have the perfect Sonic story. I think you should play this game or watch the cutscenes, it’s genuinely the best this franchise has to offer narratively.
Funnily enough it's the 3rd time Sonic has been isekai'd. Sonic Rush Adventure, Secret Rings, now Black Knight. And that's not counting the anime, SonicX.
@@ataladin87 Nope, 06 is time travel. And Dream team is just inception. Isekai requires an entirely different world. The past, future, dreams, do not count.
This game is basically Sonic getting isekai'd into King Arthur's story. So you were right about it being the alternate universe. This black knight is King Arthur corrupted by the Excaliburn scabbard...at least that's what Merlina, the wizard here(and daughter or Wizard Merlin), tells him. The other knights, despite looking like Sonic's friends, are not them and share little to no same personality treats... The Knights are Knights of the Round Table, also from King Arthur stories. Blaze The Cat is Sir Percival, Shadow is Sir Lancelot, Knuckles is Sir Gawain (yes, I love this game so much)
This game is part of the Storybook games duology, in those storybook games, Sonic gets transported into different popular books, in the first game, Sonic and the Secret Rings, he's transported to the Arabian Nights from the 1001 Nights, in this game, he's transported to the lands of Camelot from the King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table In those games, the rest of the Sonic characters usually replace characters from the original tale, they are not the same characters as the real ones although they borrow Sonic's friends designs, they don't share the same story, they don't even know Sonic, but they have a simillar personality from the "real world" (in that case, Sonic's World) counterparts, Sonic even makes fun of that in both games In this game, as you see in this cutscene, Shadow, Knuckles and Blaze are knights, they are 3 of the Knights of the Round Table, King Arthur's knights, which acts as rivals to Sonic during the game, as Sonic fights them along his journey Shadow replace Sir Lancelot Knuckles replaces Sir Gawain Blaze replaces Sir Percival Amy replaces Nimue, the Lady of the Lake Tails is the Blacksmith And Silver and Jet are Sir Galahad and Sir Lemorak, but these 2 don't appear in the story mode and aren't relevant, they're just in the multiplayer mode along the real counterpart of those characters
It's interesting to know that the summon spell for Sonic is the same spell that summoned a demon in the previous game. Does this mean Sonic is considered a demon in this world?
One of my favourite details is that the chilli dog thing really does persist all throughout the intro. When Merlina pulls him back and begins to teleport the two away, Sonic doesn't initially react. It's only when the chilli dog flies past in the breeze that Sonic reaches out and exclaims 'no!', really underrated detail imo
It is, but the problem I do have with more so as a nitpick is that it could have been even better if it wasn't a budget title, as Unleashed was clearly where resources went over and for the length of that game. Like I wish they had included both Silver and Jet's knight counterparts into the story because it's a shame they only show up in multiplier, it was a pleasant surprise that for counterparts Blaze got to share the spotlight among Knuckles and Shadow here. 5 Knights of the Round Table all having been rivals to Sonic that he has fought before would have helped fix some stuff like how Shadow's counterpart Lancelot is suppose to the strongest of the knights, yet for w/e reason he's the 1st among them to be defeated and sure we get an optional boss fight later on to showcase him being the strongest but it goes to show someone like say Jet would have been a much better one to start with as he hasn't fought Sonic in the traditional sense due to having simply raced him in Riders games so his knight counterpart being the weakest fighting wise would make sense as an introduction. The order I would have done would be: Jet -> Knuckles -> Blaze -> Silver -> Shadow
I'd really recommend playing through Black Knight since it's pretty wide regarded as one of the best Sonic stories (at least in terms of characterization)
It’d be super cool to have you watch the entire story of this game. It’s my personal favorite Sonic game and the best story in the franchise. It’s fairly short and shouldn’t take more than an our to watch everything
By the way, all of the characters are from the King Arthur legend. Shadow is Lance-a lot knuckles is Gawain, blaze is Perceval, and the main villain is King Arthur.
black knight was not the first time human or humanesque characters have appeared in the games aside from the mad doctor but for the Longest time Merlina, miss royal wizard herself, was the last human character besides Eggman (and promotional media) to be seen in over ten years before the latest game instalment, Sonic Frontiers we had The United Federation and G.U.N Eggman's grandfather and cousin Gerald and Maria Robotnik The Sonic X anime that had a lot of human characters like Topaz and Chris Thorndyke The Princess Elise the third of Soleanna Sharha, Erazor D'jinn Merlina and the Dark Knight from the storybook games Sage, Dr Eggman's artificial daughter there are more that I have not mentioned but these are from the top of my head
Spoilers for the game ahead: The Black Knight is King Arthur, but he's been corrupted by the sheath for that sword he carries. The girl, Merlina is the grandaughter of Merlin, and summoned Sonic to help stop King Arthur. He pulls the sword Caliburn from the stone and uses it to kill Arthur. But after, we find out that Merlina is the true villain who wanted the sheath for herself. Her grandfather's death struck her so hard, that it corrupted her too, where she wanted to use the sheath to create a world where nothing ever ends. Sonic stops her too by using the newly transformed Caliburn as Excalibur. Merlina's entire character is about how the fear of death can drive people to insanity just the same that the desire for power can. Sonic comforts her at the end of the game, saying that it's sad that things can end, but that's why you have to live you life in the best way you can while you're here. Also, funny that by pulling Caliburn form the stone, Sonic himself proved that he was the true King Arthur all along
Black Knight is widely regarded in the franchise as one of the best for its writing and comedy. The gameplay is rough because it was a Wii exclusive that required a lot of goofy motion controls, but the story is beyond top tier
Sonic Storybook Series game. Sonic and the Black Knight there's a sequel to Sonic and the secret rings which is really based on the book called Arabian night. Now Sonic is in the books It changes the story world. The secret rings have legends of Blue hedgehog that decide everyone's fate in the book world. In the Black Knight there's a legend about a legendary knight that pops out of nowhere known as the Knight of the wind that will come when the kingdom is in crisis.
Don't listen to everyone saying we haven't gotten stories that good since then, lol. Back in 2022, starting with Sonic Frontiers the stories have been AMAZING. There's so much good!! That's one of the great things about the Sonic franchise, every game is unique and has its own feel and vibe to it. This one was, yeah, a separate universe. It's one of the "storybook" games.
Sonic cutscenes post Unleashed have been nothing but characters standing, flapping their lips and waving their arms around. Nothing of interest until Frontiers.
