Why? He’s not even the most moral or justified Maximal. I’d argue Rampage has more of a heart than he does. At least he actually treated Transmutate well. This idiot literally supports the government that churns out Rampage for the sake of greed.
@@egbertmilton4003 What show were you watching? Depthcharge was the sole survivor of colony Omacron where he was in charge of security. His thirst for revenge is pretty justified , when all of his friends and everyone who's safety was his responsibility are now gone because of one overpower lunatic and he's left alive because said lunatic wants a playmate. As for his morality, He pulls an unconscious Cheetor from the water delaying his search Rampage when he could have just continued on. After losing track of Rampage in a later episode he tries to help Rattrap and Silverbolt secure Sentinel, inadvertently causing it to fall in to Predicon hands. Shows up to the base to help repel the Preds when it's just Rattrap and Rhinox defending. And even before his final fight with Rampage he tries to ignore the crab because stopping Megatron from getting to the Nemesis is the priority and only stops to fight when Rampage provokes him. If Transmutate didn't have such absurd power and wasn't as simple minded, I doubt that Rampage would have cared nearly as deeply or at all. And Depthcharge did not support the high council. He wanted them to find a way to terminate Rampage, and opposed the idea of sealing and handing him to Primal to exile on a remote planet. In fact when we first get introduced, He's searching for Rampage, to do the job himself, in sectors that are forbidden by that same council.
I met his voice actor (David Sobolov) at TF Con. At the Beast Wars panel, I asked the cast what directions they wanted their characters to go in. He almost immediately said, "I wish he didn't die." He said he was just wondering what the kids would think when they saw his remains float up to the water above.
I remember Rampage's death was edited on Fox Kids when that episode aired (they cut out the shot where Rampage lets go of the energon sword) and then when we got it on dvd years later my siblings and I were blown away by how that little detail changed the dynamic between Depthcharge and Rampage their final moments. I love watching your Beast Wars content! (Also, my brother had the original Depthcharge toy and those projectile discs were so fun)
@@RobotProphetsMoon oh man, didn’t realize it was edited for some TV. I kinda understand it though, not that kids can’t handle it, but that whole scene is a bit intense.
@mrsamaritan6881 i swear they cut it because we taped every episode on VHS as they aired and rewatched those tapes to death. Then we were surprised when we rewatched the dvds. The episode "Dark Designs" was also a cut episode having never aired in the US with the dvds being the first time we watched it years later.
Honestly pleasantly surprised that's the angle you took with him. As a kid I saw Depthcharge as a rightful badass fighting the scariest Predacon, but now, both Depthcharge and Rampage are tragic in their own ways. Excellent vid though, was so worth the wait
I love when people like you make video about they favourite character. It actually gives me a sense that people really love this character and give you inspiration to do that with your fav's. You and others is THE reason i want to spread out my vision about my favourite Autobot - Bumblebee, and his long lost character arc for me
He’s always sat proudly at 2nd place. (Shockwave at first) but I may switch them because of this video. Highlighting my love for him has been good. Thank you
One thing Beast Wars did that hasn't really been done since is the weird face designs of the characters Waspinator has that split jaw, Tarantulus and Rampage have animalistic mouths, Quickstrike and Depthcharge have odd nozzle mouths etc
Depth Charge is another favorite of mine. I'm hopeful for a reissue or a new figure of him in the future. I've oftentimes thought about a retelling of his arc, where he survives his final encounter with X/Rampage, but is surprised by the Predacon's final words, "It hurts no more." Accessing Rampage's memory banks, the Maximals discover a terrible truth, when X was still being studied as a Protoform, he was corrupted by Tarantulas, and that Cybershark, before defecting and renaming himself Sky-Byte, was an accomplice. Because of their meddling, X/Rampage was always in a constant state of pain and madness, never fully in control of his actions. Depth Charge resolves to destroy Tarantulas.
That last cry through Primal's comlink to me was him finally letting go all of the pain he held onto for so long and seeing what was left of him come up made me cry. Dinobot II may have helped turned the tide for the Maximals after finding his sense of honor, but he would not have found that without Depthcharge putting an end to Ramapage. Also i think Depthcharge's last words to Ramapage made him think of Transmutate and I like to think that was underlying reason why he was like, yeah, he needs to to stab my spark with that energon blade. Hope to see more Beast Wars content
I'v always liked the fact that it was Rampage who made peace with dying like that. The callback you said and how its almost like he goes" yeah you deserve this"
That’s always such a sweet thing about this franchise. We can all go from adoring characters like optimus or bumblebee to the really obscure and random ones. I like ultra Magnus a lot but another is kickback. I just love the grasshopper bug mode with his strange voice
I love the variety on your channel when it comes to the tone of videos. On one video you could be very serious and professional talking about heavy topics related to Transformers while on videos like this you can be a lot more friendly, less professional, and just say “hey I like this character for no other reason apart from him being cool”
I really actually struggled with this video when writing it because it was very "unprofessional" compared to my other stuff. I offer no solid arguments or well crafted takes, other than "I think he's cool because". That being said, I'm very happy to see that the more casual side of my content is well received, as I'd like to do more of it.
Hearing you get loud and angry at 6:40 and 7:36 was not something I was expecting today lmao. Good vid! A simple character can be a greatly affective character sometimes and a cool bot is a cool bot, this video shows that lol.
I often forget this character exists, but then I have to remember how exactly Rampage was slain and realize ‘holy hell this guy is awesome.’ Anyways yeah you should totally cover Rampage 💯

Btw, regarding the theory that the TF ONE minor bots having different colored eyes as a hint to which side they join, while I can’t really confirm it, I’m pretty sure that in Orion Pax’s speech to the minors, Barricade is standing right behind Ironhide, I think it’s him cause he’s usually depicted as a repaint of Prowl but with a gold face plate, he also had yellow eyes in the scene similar to D-16
I 100% support the theory, I’m just irked by the mountains of content that say it’s “confirmed” or “canon”. Let’s keep theories as theories. That being said, I would not at all put it past the creators to do that on purple with the characters.
4:16 well beast wars takes place after g1 happened but it is set before g1 happened so after the war but before it happens timeline wise, so the autobots got taught basketball which was carried over to the maximals
I'm somewhat fond of Depthcharge as for the longest time the only season 3 episodes i had as a kid was the VHS tape with Deep Metal, Changing Of The Guard and Cutting Edge, the first of which being DC's debut. Depth charge is a fantastic character because he showed the world of transformers to be more complicated than just the conflict at hand. He also showed that you don’t have to be a bad guy who wants to be good to be morally grey and complex. Sometimes you can be a hero who is also a real jerk.

New figures for them would be amazing. Hasbro doesn't seem to be touching the Transmetal subline, which is fine since they just finished BW figures, but with Tigerhawk getting a figure I have hope...
