I picked up a 1984 PL400 earlier this year as I needed a 2nd turntable to play my mono collection of classical music records. It only cost me £129 and I'm delighted with it. Mind you, the mono cartridge I bought for it also cost £129. Not only does the TT work perfectly, the often damaged dustcover is in excellent condition with no cracks, scratches or hazing.

These will sound FAR better of you not place them on top of speakers. These should be mechanically isolated enough to prevent feedback.
