I bought a PL-41 in February of 1968, at the Army PX where I was stationed in Viet Nam. I shipped it home new in the box, and used it until around 1974, at that time with a Stanton 681E, when I replaced the Pl-41 with the first model of the Technics SL1200. The PL-41 went to a friend, who used it for many years after that. I always thought it was one of the best looking turntables. I had started with an AR turntable when they were new, and liked the symplicity of the design, and always felt the PL-41 was similar in terms of simplicity and looks. By the way, the rest of my system from the PX included a TEAC A1200, Sansui 3000 receiver and Sonic (who???) speakers. Thanks for posting :)

From one vet to another - thank you for your service. I bought my SX 1000TD, Pioneer PL 30, and CS 77A speakers from a Vietnam Vet (Marine) who picked it up in japan on his way back home in 1969. The set is one of my prized possessions. It came with all of the warranty cards, manuals, cables, and brochures/catalogs. Basically a time-capsule. The only thing he didn't keep was his TEAC A 1200 (I have the manual for it). I run the receiver through 4 Klpsch bookshelf speakers in my living room. The turntable is tucked away and gets into my office rotation from time to time. I'm with you - I like the heavy wooden based Pioneers from that era.

Hello the pioneer pl-50 is not a pl-41 with auto return the pl-41 has a j shape arm with built-in antiskading the pl-50 also has a j shape arm with added antiskading also the motor on the pl-41 is better then the pl-50 and pl-50A. The pl-50A has the same arm that's on the pl-61 minus the hight adjustment it has none the pl-61 does thanks for your time

Really good info. I was hoping to capture some of those differences. I think I kept saying 'straight tonearm' when (as you point out), it's more of a "J" shaped tonearm.

The one you call PL 41 is exactly like mine but is says PL 50 on the back.

Great comparison! What oil or grease do you recommend to lube the lever?

I didn’t keep any of them, but if I were looking today I would find a clean PL41 over the 50/50A.
