      I have hold to crouch mapped to left paddle, jump mapped to right paddle, and dodge mapped to single press on A. I should use a third paddle for dodge, but I’ve tried every pro controller and none of them are comfortable with more than two

      Still on ps4, I have the Sony back paddle attachment. Left paddle is jump, right paddle is crouch/slide (which in turn are tied to "X" and "O", which I ignore). Uncharged melee to right joystick, and charged melee to R1. Last I have Barricade to right D-pad.

    Honestly playing controller is one of the main reasons I still play D2; where my friends got bored playing MnK I immersed myself in the simple enjoyment of the feel of the gunplay when using the input method it was originally designed for.

    So glad you made a video about this. I started playing destiny 2 on PC with MnK, and decided to pick up a controller almost a year ago because i was getting burnt out with destiny and wanted to try something different, and i never switch back. There was an initial struggle period of trying to get used to controller since I was never a console fps player but once I got used to it, I found myself actually performing better in PvP. I noticed my awareness was better, my positioning was better, I started to be more consistent overall, and that's when I noticed how mentally lazy i was with MnK all those years. Over time I also noticed that the increased mental sharpness translates to other fps that I play, like Apex. Hands down one of the best gaming decision I ever made.

    Yessssss. Welcome to the “Sticks on PC” club. I love it. One thing I’ll add to the “not science” category is, one of the reasons I like to play sticks is simply because it’s much closer to the feel of firing a real weapon than M&K can ever be, thus adding to the feeling of immersion and just sinking into the game.
    Btw, your dulcet vocal cords mixed with that refined British accent totally hit my ASMR trigger to the point, I could probably just loop your videos in the background all day. Well done.

    I did the same thing. When destiny came to PC I didn’t switch to mnk immediately, I think it took me a year or two. Played mnk for a little over a year, decided to come back to controller for about a year again. Just a couple months ago my nearly decade old elite controllers stick started turning slow so I switched back to mnk and became a monster. Every engagement felt crisp and I felt way more lethal than before. That controller game sense is wild when utilized on the mouse.

    I think you've put in to words what I've been feeling since switching to MnK. I've had a controller in my hands since N64. When I switched to mnk there was a really weird disconnect in my head that I couldn't place. I still struggle with it even though I'm much better on mnk than I was when I switched. But I can't FEEL gun fights the same was as I've been so used to on controller. Interesting.

    I’ve been a controller player for at least ten years and what you say in the end about becoming overconfident and sloppy is exactly what I experience when I play without vibration enabled. The lack of feedback when taking fire messes me up because the visual queues just don’t register with the same urgency.
    Whenever I try MnK I also sorely miss the analog movement. WASD only allows at most eight directions of movement with only two velocities, while with a Stick you have almost infinite directions and velocities to move at.

    You mentioned something I've wondered about quite a bit--lack of rumble for mnk and if players miss it. I had a controller's rumble go dead and it made the game feel so flat. No feedback on shots, suddenly can't tell you're taking damage, etc. That sensory package is so much a part of the game for me, even if I could skip the mnk learning curve, I wouldn't switch.

    Meanwhile i'm kind of the inverse. I'm a mostly controller player trying to get into mnk. I'll have an okay time but the second I get tilted and bust out the sticks its like i'm a completely different person. Its usually too late and doesn't help me overall, but i'll sudddenly go from mediocrity to this guy's a threat. I think you're spot on with the lazy part. I'd been wondering why I can bounce between the two and do so much better despite the game sense.

    I've been on controller since I was 6 years old (now 21) and Ive noticed by usint other people's controllers who had the vibration turned off that I rely heavily on vibration to know what is going on around me. The subtle pull of a duskfield or vortex grenade, the feeling of a person shooting me in the back, and a bunch of other scenarios i react without really dedicating thought to it because I know to get out if it shakes.

    Pulling a trigger on a controller feels better than ClickOn with a mouse.
    With separeted sensitive for ADS, and using jumping on back, or shouder buttons (I'm using L1), the movement on controller is almost a match to MnK.
    In all PvP matchs that I entered against PC players I allways performed extremely well.

    I remember when I swapped to controller. My laptop broke and I wanted some destiny but couldn't. At the same time a friend gifted me a ps3 so I thought might as well try D1. It was clunky and weird but I kinda got the feeling for it. Once I had my pc again I felt too comfortable with controller that I just kept using it. It's comfy, maybe not much for PvP for me, but it's comfy for PvE.

    i've only ever played fps games on console - only after cancelling a trip to visit my boyfriend in january did i invest in a gaming laptop, and i straight up cannot wrap my head around mnk movement. you articulated why i love controller destiny so much so perfectly. genuinely, without haptic feedback, i feel lost. if my controller batteries are low and i'm in a GM, i will find a place to hide and change them because even in pve, those physical cues add so much to how i respond to the game. i'll always be a little sad that no matter how much effort i put in to get good, i'll never be quite as good as an mnk player bc of technical limitations, but this has helped me feel a lot more confident that i can at least get Better than i am and has pointed out areas i can watch for in my own gameplay.

  • @ShaoShaoMienshao
    @ShaoShaoMienshao 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Weirdly enough, I think most of what you said in this video somehow applies to just me learning how to use Sidearms properly in PvP, even though I was still on M&K the whole time. The fear, the recognition of vulnerabilities, the extra emphasis on my spacing and positioning, all of it became paramount to my success. It feels like I had outgrown that complacency and improved overall. All of a sudden, in a single day, my seasonal KDA went from 1.95 all the way up to 2.1 -- with a handcannon and a SIDEARM. I went 6-0 in Trials Freelance and only lost because I didn't think I'd make it that far and bought a Wealth instead of Mercy. Putting myself out of my comfort zone and waking up to that complacency really helped me iron out bad habits and become a better player.

    I think the gap between Controller vs. M&K has never been smaller. You can re-map buttons, one has reticle-friction while the other has lower recoil overall, and a lot of really great players play Controller. Controller leans into your strengths, and if you're a slower, more calculated player that values positioning above moment-to-moment gameplay, then it's best for you to play Controller.
    tl;dr? Stop complaining about input devices, people. If the person's better than you, they're going to mop you no matter the input device...

    • @Lemon-x-
      @Lemon-x- 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I would agree in the vast majority of cases, I do think that controller is still slightly weaker overall but it's not by a huge margin and it's only once you get to the higher end of PvP that the differences really start to be clear. I'll say that bungie probably has the most well balanced controller vs MnK situation that I've seen in a game so far.
      Also it's worth noting that next season controller is going to get hit a lot harder than MnK by the airborne changes, I don't want to analyse it too soon but from what we know I think controller players are going to struggle a lot with using the verticle space now.
      TLW more than makes up for all these disadvantages though, that thing is busted on controller and probably needs adjusting

    • @zwojack7285
      @zwojack7285 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      One needs software aim assistance to be anywhere near the other, so yeah, no. Someone said "If you don't want to aim, use controller, if you want no recoil, use MK". I honestly consider aiming more impactful than recoil control, especially since you can influence the latter greatly with weapon rolls and mods.

      When you play with m/k on a console people call you an cheater - the mixed lobbys on pc gave me mostly the feeling i play against cheaters - it s an constant uphill battle ! it s like a boxfight between an heavyweight and an middleweight fighter - it s simply not fair and it sucks the fun out of pvp for a lot of players. When crossplay came the outcry from the console base was big - so Bungie protected the console gamers with an opt out option. Somehow Bungie forgot to do the same for controller players on pc....

  • @ShayBlez
    @ShayBlez 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I've tried to play MnK, have struggled to learn even basic movement and ability placement on a keyboard due to a solid foundational lack of touch typing my entire life, however, since I began playing a little of D1 on controller before I injured my right hand, further complicating touch typing learning attempts, I fell absolutely in love with what I could do with an Xbox style pad on a PS3, back in the day at Loot cave 1.0 even with 7 stitches in my fingertip, barely able to hit either trigger.
    I didn't earn a single legendary on that account. I learned how to use a sword on the moon in that one, what was it a mission you could do on a f2p account before Taken King came out, if I recall correctly?
    Thats how good Controller feels when you need it.
    Controller aside from this has years of muscle memory of FPS gaming for me, Borderlands 2, if you care to count Portal 1 + 2, Half Life 2 [inc Black Mesa, and other steam releases aside it] I may not have played a super competitive game or two but I've definitely gotten the Right stick aim RT fire muscle memory down strongly, breaking that level of immersion at this point in my playtime ~ 6k hours into Destiny 2 now?
    I'm a fish out of water.

      !! Also I love the real word of advice for controller mains out there:
      Respond as soon as you can to your danger sense and improve your gamesense as much as you can of who what where is around you, the faster youre safely to where you need to be, the more effective your counter options become.
      This is also something countering invaders in gambit these past few days has been teaching me, thank you, for hammering it in, with your word.

I've always been bad. And no: In Call of Duty reticle friction always got in the way more times than it helped, and there was no ADS reticle friction in Battlefield 3. I hope I could play D2 with a controller but no friction. I hate it.

    I play controller on steam and here’s a couple tips. If you want to compete against other 140 hc then you have to dial down the fov to something like 95. Sidearms are better than smg s on controller. The range stickiness reaches so much farther with sidearms on controller for some reason. Some people say that you can be great with low sense but I don’t see how. Crank that sense all the way up and get gud with it, ads can be as low as you need to hit shots.

    Justa a tip for pc controller players. You can make your own controller configuration file and save it on your pc and edit it. Its .vdf extension file. When you learn steam controler file comands than you can custom configure it. You can configure anything and the sensitivity put there has no limit so you can go as fast as any mouse thou the faster you go the harder it gets to imprint it in your muscle memory.

    Im a pretty decent player. Im a 1.45 in Trials with 79 flawless tickets. Pretty decent. My bud is a 1.6 in Trials with 70 flawless tickets and he is also pretty good. He plays with vibration off while I play with it on. Theres actually benefits to having vibration on. For instance some ppl react to touch faster than sight or sound. If u take damage the vibration will make u feel that and u may be able to react quicker to that than u would just seeing yourself visually get hit. Also different guns give different vibrations and your body remembers these and once you switch to a gun and that vibration kicks on u already know how to use that gun based on the vibration. The advantage to not using vibration would probs just be the fact that there isn't anything to throw u off or distract u and your shooting experience will obviously be as smooth as possible but it def comes down to preference and you can succeed in game either way. I personally have tried to play with vibration off and its a no go for me. I will never play this game with vibration off. My comment is mostly just about vibration but as far as controller vs mnk goes i think a lot of ppl are super limited in the way they think about these. Both have pros and cons. Idk which input is "better" and most ppl probs don't either because at the end of the day they play one input over the other.

My funnelweb was a laser in comparison to how unruly it felt on controller and for the first ever I got why people enjoyed hand cannons, which I think I never enjoyed on controller partially due to that reticle stickiness. But I LOVE the fact there is things to love and hate about both and it's about preference at the end of the day. I do agree that guns feel more uniquely immersive on controller and I'd never want to turn that vibration off regardless if it affects my aim at all. Great video!

    I've slowly morphed into a more hybrid player. Used controller for all of my life and in 2018 I finally swapped to MnK. It wasn't until last year when I picked controller up for kicks that I realized I could still hang. I've come to prefer some weapons on one input and swap as needed. There are some games I'll swap midmatch. A bow, hand cannon, or slug? MnK. A sidearm, sniper, SMG or auto rifle? Controller. It really is nice being able to swap between and I notice that if I'm doing poorly, swapping to the other input will greatly increase my performance.
    The stickiness is so incredibly strong in this game as well. Playing Call of Duty or Battlefield will really show it. Generally the more a weapon relies on trace aiming the stronger it feels for me on controller. While quick flicks and tapping feels much more natural on MnK because my movement is also better. Very fun playstyles to learn for sure.

    This video had me absolutely enthralled! As a long term console player moving to PC was a huge step mechanically for me but with the added ferocity MnK players give out. Alot to be learned and I dare say I'd try my hand/thumbs at controller to see if I could yield the same results as you did!

    Fantastic video, very interesting to see how you approached the issue of relearning an input method and comparing the experience between the two. I found my experiences very similar whenever I try D2 on a controller; I get very scared and immediately put it back down. I've been using MnK since 2014 soon after my PS3 broke and have only recently started using my PS3 controller for character action and racing games. Perhaps it's time to return to my roots.

    The fear effect you describe stems from the movement limitations you have on controller that you don’t have on pc. You can’t flip 180 to instantly exit a lane that you sprinted in to and got hit. You can’t turn in and out of gunfights as easily when you get 1 shot down to an opponent. Your strafe is worse because your change of direction isn’t instant, and you can’t slide through a lane while facing backwards so you can’t be hit with a headshot.

    Thank you for describing how controller FEELS! This is how it is for me. I feel like I'm getting hit or that something hurt with the rumble on. Even the feel of standing in the healing rift is super nice. I had to turn rumble off for PvE because I was having massive issues countering flinch through the rumble. Probably all in my head mind you.
    I find it easier to acquire a target and stay on it on M&K personally but I can't move barely at all plus all of the tactile feelings you described with controller keep me firmly with controller on PC as my input method.
    Did you notice that the controller would pull you off of your target to a nearby target? That happens to me all of the time, especially in PvP. I'll be fighting one person, another will slide by and my controller pulls me to the new person. Not really sure how to get around this.

    You can kinda emulate this by not using sprint with mnk tbh
    You start to be more cautious about where and how you engage considering that you cant just 180 slide out of any danger

    Controller feels more immersive and familiar in some ways, but worse in other ways since my PC broke and I've had to switch back to console until I can afford a new one. Thumbsticks are fluid compared to WASD, but trying to turn quickly feels like the air turned into molasses. Increasing the sensitivity doesn't help because then trying to aim at an enemy feels impossible. Reticle stickiness is nice most of the time, but it's very disorienting when it pulls me off where I actually want to aim because an enemy walked past my reticle.

    This is exactly what I'm going through right now. I've been MNK gaming for... uh... 16 years? I always "tried" out the sticks, but never stuck to them.. Now I'm in the stage of my skill that I'm losing it, and I don't know why, Maybe it's because I'm nearing 30 ? Maybe it's because I'm not training enough anymore, not sure! Who knows. But I want to see how I will perform with a controller. I mean, I race with controllers and perform exceptionally well, hit high leaderboards, I play adventure with controllers, and don't struggle at all, but FPS is always MNK. Maybe it's time to make the switch.

    I can only play on Xbox due to having a weak PC. Perhaps when the GPU prices come down, I can upgrade. In over 2 years my KD remains the same. At the 9-minute mark you explained perfectly what's happening with me. I'm always behind my team. I'm always getting caught out.

    This game has input problems on mnk. Skips, input not registering, inconsistent delays. Mostly because it's centered on controller, and mouse was an afterthought.
    But I'd miss the ability to throw a nade in one direction while shooting in another.

    I love how even K&M and Controller feel in this game.
    K&M makes movement easier and more consistent/flexible, while Controller makes aiming easier and more consistent/flexible.
    The only problem is Last Word.
    edit: The only reason to use Last Word on K&M imo is to do exactly what you did in this video here by swapping to controller and back again. Using Last Word until I can do well in non-endgame gamemodes, and then never being able to compete at all in endgame modes, then swapping over to something like DMT or my usual main weapons like Gnawing Hunger, and suddenly I'm playing at least 6 times as good as before I used Last Word, even though the weapon itself left me performing worse the entire time.
    edit2: Unless you're cammycakes level of good, not taking into account Trials or Iron Banner, or a matchmaking lottery god

    If there is one thing about D2 I've learned playing on MK...it made me worse at shooters in general. It reinforced a lot of bad habits on top of the janky netcode that can make a lot of fights feel like people aren't exactly on screen where you're shooting.

  • @seanpereira6961

    I'm not 100% sure you're on it here. I think the miniscule deficiency you're not quite putting your finger on is the controller stick dead zones. Peak shooting, rapid turning to track an opponent in the vertical space, using momentum into burst jumping then spinning 180 degrees etc. are all much harder, or wooden as you described, due to the deadzones on the sticks. You can tune it down, but only to an extent, and it needs to be done gradually at that (try and do it too fast and you might as well bed down your M&K muscle memory).
    I agree, it's a combination of things but that's the real bleeding edge difference, that I think you feel against tough sweats in Trials. Then the cascading doubt, and self inflicted mind games start flowing on.

      Playing controller makes it harder to react to unexpected things, but easier to play expected scenarios. Which is why in the boiled down nature of scrims/really high level trials, controller snipers are dominant, but shotgun mains are usually mnk.
